I like Forbidden Planet but there are certain flaws that take it down. For one thing, Leslie Nielsen's character is too perfect, too alpha male. The Freudian psychology at the heart of the story is kind of silly. And the romance is lame. It's a lot of fun, though. A strong, intellgent sci-fi premise, Robby the Robot, awesome set design and matte backgrounds, killer electronic sounds and music, and Anne Francis in skimpy miniskirts.

The poster suggests a campy cheese-fest (and there is a bit of that), but overall this is surprisingly thoughtful and intelligent film that manages to transcend the usual space opera tropes while still delivering fantastic (for the time) visual effects. A classic, and deservedly so.

I was expecting something campy, but was surprised by an intelligent script with many serious situations and philosophical ideas. It's an interesting variation of Shakespeare's The Tempest. In many ways, it also holds political commentary and speaks to the paranoia of the 1950s. The creative imagination in the scenery and technology on Altair is astounding, but the one thing that dates the movie is the excessive amount of technological explanation. Some things are better left fantastical.

It contains every element that ought to be in a sci-fi space opera: the sense of wonder, the hot space babe, the alien creatures, the brilliant scientist, the masculine space captain, the suspenseful paranoia, the robotic intelligence, the social commentary, the twist revelation, the effects spectacle. It's let down by acting, cliches, retro future design and so forth. But this sort of all out soft-sci-fi bash wouldn't be outdone until Star Wars over two decades later.

The film is less focused on building a mystery and more invested on a cringeworthy subplot of guys grooming a girl that's never met a man. Also, these men drone on and on about a wonderful technological future like Tolkien writing for Disney's EPCOT. Yet outside of a limited visual style, it's adroitly made for the era; especially in the fx, sets, and music. It mainly deserves kudos for influencing Star Trek--which improved on the premise with better storytelling, diversity, and morality plays.

So good, and so mediocre. More good than mediocre, though. I rose to my feet in unmitigated joy when the robot entered the frame holding a bouquet of flowers. The robot is so, so good. The special effects and sets are simply amazing as well. Totally worth watching for those alone. However, the acting is as bland as it comes. I felt so sorry for Anne Francis. She just stands there watching a bunch of men make a movie.

Cheesy at times? Sure, but it's to be expected given the genre and time period. What a refreshing sense of wonder and adventure this movie has. The amazing discoveries of a far away planet are as awe-inspiring to the characters as they are to the audience. The sets, props, and effects are gorgeous and exciting. The sounds effects are haunting and atmospheric. The movie explores both intellect-challenging scientific concepts, and questions of morality and human nature. This is true sci-fi.

The sets and special effects still hold up today (the sets more than the effects), and it's not a bad story. I was disappointed there wasn't more Robby though. He's definitely the best part of the whole film. The movie has a surprisingly high body count, too. I did not expect this many dead spacemen by the end. Just like I didn't expect explicit psychoanalytic content. Seriously though, Robby is the best part of this movie.

This is an achievement of nigh-perfection in science fiction cinema. So many aspects of the film evoke sheer childlike awe while simultaneously maintaining an intellectually deep and powerful story. More than anyone else, Dr. Morbius is full of so many memorably melodramatic words that blend the seriousness of his discovery with a delightful pinch of romanticism. This is a new favorite.

The excellent special effects, superb film sets and revolutionary music (or 'electronic tonalities' as they're described in the opening credits) all combine to form an often unsettling impact on the viewer, making them uneasy. The message communicated here seems to be on the surface a commentary on human frailties, but I have an inkling that hidden beneath this facade is a critique of communism and related to this a warning about the perils of nuclear war (a power beyond human control).

Ahead of its time in terms of imagination and effects, yet stuck in the stone age when it comes to suspense. The actors who stepped onto those incredible sets seemed to have been briefed to play it as a slow-burning drama, where a tense thriller would have fit the story much better. Far too much standing around voicing logical opinions, and not nearly enough running around like headless chickens, screaming. Still, a solid film which has earned its place in sci-fi history.

A classic if under-appreciated film. The birth of many science fiction hits can be traced back to this film. Space Family Robinson and Star Trek are two that owe their success in part to Forbidden planet. Sumptuous sets, a decent script albeit with some holes and call act leads all make for a very watchable science fiction movie.

Yeah, the dialogue, costumes, and sets are cheesy. And the acting is bad (Leslie Neilson in his dramatic roles acts exactly the same way as he does in his comedies. The only difference is that in the latter, it's hilarious.) But the story, with its Shakespearean influence, is pretty damn good.

Beautifully filmed and designed, with great effects, color, and sets. It also features Leslie Nielsen in his dramatic prime; he gives a great performance even when his character comes up lacking (often thanks to the dated gender politics). The script has some interesting things to say, even when it devolves into that peculiar brand of pseudo-Freudian psychobabble particular to '50s cinema. Anne Francis doesn't get much to do, contrary to what the opening number of Rocky Horror might claim.

Heavy on the sci with a side of space babe. Highlights are the trekky thespian bad guy, inspired hand-drawn monster effects, and Robby the Robot (who cheekily gets credited as a robot). Thoughtful and imaginative but never very engaging.

It hasn't aged well, partly because it has been mimicked somewhat by a countless number of sci-fi since and party because the visual effects don't look great (unless viewed through the 'at the time they were great' lens). That said there are some cool moments and the main story itself is unique and interesting. The romance angle was mostly useless, as the woman was written presumably by men who had never interacted with a female before. Robby he robot was cool.

Not one of my favorites, this is still influential (I can't believe Gene Roddenberry wasn't partly inspired by this while formulating "Star Trek"), with a solid cast and sleek MGM production values, but Wilcox's heavy-handed direction and an annoying electronic musical score often make it a chore to sit through. Many props from this film (not to mention Robby The Robot) turned up later on TV shows like "The Twilight Zone" and "Lost in Space".

After World War II, as science and astronomy briefly shone bright (less than 20 years after this movie, we'd have landed on the moon), Forbidden Planet took a morality tale and moved it to the skies. Yes, the acting is a bit wooden, the characters talk far too much, and the special effects don't look all that special today. But they worked with what they had, and the movie rightly takes its place in the list of great sci-fi flicks (as a bonus, you get Leslie Nielsen acting serious!).

Brilliant set design and amazing music. Introduces some very neat philosophical and sociological themes and ideas: Nature vs Nurture, Natives vs Settlers, the Subconscious and Unconscious, but unfortunately these ideas are then explained to us as if we cannot be trusted to think about them ourselves. The acting is also quite wooden and the pacing is sluggish but, this is actually quite decent, has some great music and set pieces, and even though they are explained, the ideas and themes are neat.

Damn this movie has some nice sets. And it knows it. And it really likes to show them off, lingering lovingly while people talk and talk. Also, another bunch of deeply unprofessional military men, this time with a side-order of "It would have served you good if you had been raped, the way you dress and flirt with my men!" aimed at a twenty-year old woman with zero experience with men. Ah, the 50s. Good times!

Feels more like the SF films of a decade or so later; actually strongly reminds me of a Star Trek episode. Unfortunately after a strong beginning never quite makes the most of its premise. Perhaps surprisingly enjoyable, intelligent though of course rather camp 50s sci-fi adventure. Clunky in places, particularly some of the special effects (for a contemporary viewer) but a sense of humour and decent premise make this very worthwhile. The suspense of the monster actually holds up fairly well because of its invisibility.

Yes, it's campy, yes, it's dated in its portrayal of women etc., but It takes everything that makes '50s sci-fi fun and turns it up a few notches. The pacing is better than I remember, the special effects are just excellent for the time, and it's pretty funny at points too. It comes across like an intelligent, high budget Star Trek episode in many ways (and pre-dates it)... and it's based on Shakespeare's The Tempest, so there's that.

This ended up being a lot more intelligent and thought out than I expected. It's still a silly 50s science fiction film, but it also had some interesting philosophical and anthropological musings. Unfortunately, these didn't really come until the end. It's not a long film at all, but due to the very slow pacing, it sure felt long. The special effects and music are admirable, even if they're rather dated. The acting is pretty clunky, along with the characterisation.

Perhaps inevitably hamstrung by some era-specific gender politics (when Nielsen slut-shames Francis' sheltered, naïve character, the film seems about to broach a critique of his behaviour, but no, I think it's to be taken literally!), but as an influential sci-fi landmark, it's surprisingly fresh and involving, with terrific set design and convincing special effects, and Pidgeon doing his best hammy Welles impression. As a B-movie done on a clear A-budget, this is a pretty impressive effort.

Forbidden Planet has great visuals, tons of cool fictional sciencey stuff and hilarious sexism. Unfortunately, it also has a terrible "wobbly theremin" score, lots of cringeworthy scenes with horny dudes and a "diabolus ex machina" ending that is as unsatisfying as when the monster on Scooby Doo is someone not introduced before. I generally enjoy 50s-60s sci-fi (X Minus One, Doctor Who, Star Trek) but Forbidden Planet is like a subpar serial/episode of any of those series.

A classic sci-fi movie that served as the inspiration for Star Trek. There are some minor flaws here, some of the acting isn't that good and the drunk cook makes little sense on such a ship. The story is engrossing though, the visuals are spectacular as is the wonderful electronic score. For 1950s SF, it's interesting, but still clunky. See Danny Peary, Guide for the Film Fanatic (London: Simon & Schuster, 1987), p. 157: “Film owes a nod to King Kong. Altair-IV is Morbius’s psychological terrain, just as Skull Island was Carl Denham’s; whereas Kong was the manifestation of Denham’s sublimated sexual urges toward Ann Darrow and was used as his surrogate to chase away other men, Morbius (who harbors incestuous feelings) conjures up the Id Monster to keep his daughter for himself.”

Interesting enough premise, though based on outdated psychology, but painfully slow and the love story is intensely idiotic, The space crew are also presented as good guys but at best are inbetween, since they jut barged in on this guy's space paradise, refuse to leave when he warns them of a threat, cause his death, then make off with his daughter after slut-shaming her. Would be cool to see a remake with likeable main characters and without all the 1950s BS.

For some years Freder found this unwatchable . . . but this was probably due to lousy, cropped prints and the very stilted, formal first act. It still isn't a favorite, but the scope of the thing and the deeper layers of story finally come through when one gets a chance to see it more or less as its makers intended. Pidgeon's deep professionalism helps a lot -- but it's awfully hard to look at Leslie Neilson's, earlier, serious roles without laughing after seeing his later, funny ones.

Essentially the ultimate 50s movie. Post-art deco design, the sort of pre-feminist strong female lead, the Jungian subconscious as a major plot point, and A ROBOT!! The beepidy-boopidy soundtrack got kind of old, and it's strange to see a young Leslie Nielsen, but when it works, it's great. The film does a very good job at slowly ratcheting up the tension, but it gets a little too exposition-heavy at times. All in all, the ne plus ultra of 50s sci-fi. Not perfect, but damn close.
