Real quippy script. John Garfield was amazing.

Standard small-town hearth-fire hokum, impeccably done and really quite irresistible. Garfield is a sensation in his first role.

Classic, three-hankie outing. Garfield shines, in a role tailor-made for him, as the world-weary suitor driven to extremes in the name of love. Great performances from all.

Likable but just okay Curtiz melodrama fairly typical of normal fare of this time. A lot of likable performances, with the always fun Claude Rains as the father of the four daughters and John Garfield's film debut. There are a few funny lines early on.

No doubt a sweet woman's film. Most important a introduction to the world of John Garfield. His first movie. And he made an instant impression with his outsider personality. Kind of the James Dean of the 30s. While his character might seem like a stereotypical melancholic today, this type of character wasn't that normal in 1930s Hollywood cinema. Loved the first interaction between May Robson and Garfield. This was also one of Rains' jollier roles as the happy-angry father.
