Funny and yet a bit tragic, cause Morris has managed to make a film about one of the things the western world both fears and fights the most, but with great irony and a plot that (unlike Hollywood films on the same topic) makes you laugh instead of tremble and thats a healthy point of view... And you gotta love these guys, especially their choice of costumes for the marathon and the idea of having specially trained crows with minibombs fly in to stuff and blow it up...

A comedy about British Muslim extremism? There's only one person who could pull it off: Chris Morris. His secret? Research. You cannot make a film like this - carefully negotiating a minefield of potential outrage while cracking jokes - without having learnt a lot on the subject and the people. The final act is the sobering conclusion to his research, the demystification of the mindset and motivation of people who have radicalised, how we react to them and Muslims at large. Also a crow explodes.

Only particularly brave comics can tackle such serious and currently relevant subject matter, and only talented ones can be successful in crafting a well functioning satire out of it. "Four Lions" is both funny and entertaining, but it's almost too dark in its comedy and in the process sacrifices some of its humor. Sometimes I wonder if satire is just a word for trying to make your audience feel guilty for laughing.

I think that Morris went with terrorism for his own devlish pleasure, testing just how black your sense of humor is. There's no discernable satire, but a movie with this subject matter so insistently staying the course, is half the joke in itself. It's 'Dumb and Dumber' with suicide bombers, sporting such gracious statements as: "I may ask you to blow yourself up, but I would NEVER ask you to piss in your own mouth!". Save for one Afghan-joke too far, it is epically hilarious - and vice versa.

Probably the best comedy about suicide bombers. Lots of grand moments not just in hilarity but also in terror. The whole marathon segment is particularly amazing for its deliverance on the premise. "Dancing in The Moonlight" being played in the van had me rolling.

It takes massive balls to treat that subject in this way, so my unreserved respect for doing it. The result is an often hilarious and pitch black comedy putting the Hah! back in Jihad. As the story unfolds, the underlying tragedy of the incompetent terror-cell's goal creates a strange mismatch between sympathy for the "loveable" losers and the horrific acts, they're planning. The movies only real shortcoming, is that it doesn't really address this, and thus ends kinda emotionally unresolved.

Chris Morris's talent for line-crossing satire and Jesse Armstrong's rapid-fire dialogue (every bit as good as his work on The Thick of It) combine perfectly. The result is a refreshingly absurd alternative to the dour, menacing image of extremism that is so easily trotted out by the media, and it's probably a more accurate portrayal: these are Richard Reid-esque figures, hapless and disaffected but ultimately a danger only to themselves. The funniest film I've seen in years.

Writer/Director Chris Morris has developed satire over the past two decades and is a comparable British equivalent to Jon Stewart. His film is about 4 bumbling British Islamic jihiadists who are trying to plan the perfect terrorist attack, but struggle with their true reasons for doing so. There are a number of moments of nervous humor drawn from ridiculous bombing techniques (i.e. bombs strapped to crows, silly costumes). A maddening mix of terror, physical comedy and witty dialogue exchanges.

A brave way to treat this subject - and to make it accessible. There are at least two very good reasons to make fun of the topics that scare us: 1/ laughing about something makes it less intimidating 2/ inappropriateness is, in itself, funny. With its interesting characters and a steady stream of hilarious jokes, this comedy made me laugh AND care.

Even though it humanizes the bombers and makes something totally unsympathetic entertaining and sympathetic, Morris doesn't let the rest of society off the hook. There are almost no good or competent people on either side, and Morris simultaneously makes fun of suicide bombers and society's reactions to them. Overall, ballsy as hell, consistently dark, and funnier than it should have been given the subject.

Brilliantly dark comedy that goes where few would even dare to think of. Morris simultaneously humanizes and mocks extremism via the lovable but misguided characters, creating a conflict where we want them to succeed, yet know that they shouldn't. The other side isn't let off the hook at all though, giving further power to the satire. A solid effort.

Simply brilliant. A typical Chris Morris slab of dark, laugh out loud, topical satire. "Four Lions" is one of the funniest films I have seen in an age, displaying Morris' unique ability to weave layers of humour into his work ranging from simple slapstick, to complex symbolism. There are plenty of excellent comic performances on show too, and at times in the midst of the scathing satire there are one or two quite touching moments. Best British comedy of the decade. Dark humor. Irrational ideology. This movie highly exaggerates the stupidity, but taps into the insane ideology that supports suicide bombers & terrorism with dangerous concepts such as heaven & life after death. There would be no Jihadists if people accepted that death is final. You have to be incredibly stupid to buy into the religious nonsense. Unfortunately, there is no shortage of brainwashed zealots in the world. This movie pokes fun at them & makes you wonder how they got that way.

British Muslims planning a terrorist attack may seem an easy target for satire, but Morris carefully avoids stereotypes while deftly stressing the dangers of extremism through the proponents' lack of understanding of their own motives. Yes, a white guy CAN make a funny film about jihadis without being Islamophobic. And keep in mind, this film was made BEFORE the Boston Bombings, BEFORE ISIS was on the news almost all the time. Very dark UK comedy about four friends who have a dream... to become proper jihadists and die for the cause. If they could only agree on exactly what the cause is, and just how their (and others') deaths are supposed to serve it. Somehow manages to portray wannabe suicide bombers as both sympathetic and utterly foolish, and ends up both hilarious and oddly heartbreaking.

It's a funny movie, and between Waj's idiocy and Barry's insanity, every attempted plot ends up like a Three Stooges' movie. But what puts it above an average "idiots with a bomb" story is the honesty with which Omar's character is played. His serious scenes are a counter-balance to the dark-humored farce, and provide a small kernel of reality behind the hilarity.

Slightly disappointing that most of the hilarious bits had to come from the mouth of the character stupider than any real person could conceivably be, and not from the subtle satire which was present in a few scenes. The satire is often rather good, but far more time is spent banging on with the same joke about how stupid these guys are. At times it is very funny, at other times the humour falls flat and feels forced. I particularly liked the scenes at the main character's home with his family which really help to humanise these characters and emphasise that it is not the necessarily the terrorist's fault but the group that deludes them into thinking what they are doing is right. Dark and hilarious. A very British film - I can't imagine much of this translating to a hit comedy in the States . When I first saw it I didn't notice how much of the dialogue is classic Chris Morris - it's dark but always takes a left turn in terms of cadence, word choice or delivery. Brilliant satire and manages to balance light moments with intensely upsetting pieces of pathos. Excellently sketched characters - within the first minute we know everyone and where they stand. I would have probably liked this a lot more if the DVD I watched had English subtitles. I must have missed at least 1/3 of the dialog, because I couldn't understand what they were saying.

If you're gonna make a movie like this, it has to be funnier. This was funny, I laughed a couple times. But you have to seriously hit it out of the park to make "terrorists win" work.

One of the bleakest, most human black comedies I've seen. Morris puts a daringly sympathetic face on the hapless suicide bombers while simultaneously condemning the pressures and motives driving them toward terrorist acts. By the end I felt like I'd been sucker punched by a clown--I wasn't sure if I wanted to laugh or cry.

1 funny moment, the rest of the time I was waiting for something to happen and trying to ignore just how racist it is. Not recommended.

Hilarious and edgy without coming off like it's trying too hard.
