Sequel to Four Daughters begins with the same tracking shot into the household, and essentially tries to repeat the modest success of the first film. However, this time there's no John Garfield, and the central conflict is psychological and eludes Curtiz's ability to dramatize. The result is a wan retread.

The sequel to Four Daughters (1938), which was John Garfield instant break-though. He died in the first film and was also the life source of it. So how does Four Wives (1939) cope without him. They make him the focal point dealing with his death, even inserting a hologram of him to make sure his presence is felt. But without the real Garfield this don't reach any magnificent emotional heights. Instead it's basically just a ordinary sweet family movie with Eddie Albert getting introduced.
