Foxtrot is neatly divided into three acts. The first is an impressive, slightly eccentric take on parental grief. The second is a deliberately surreal, and still impressive, parable on military occupation. In the third act, the movie falls apart and devolves into a generic Israeli family melodrama. By then, the initially dazzling cinematography begins to seem manneristic, the plot turns from refreshingly strange to tacky and implausible, and the good performances no longer suffice.

What an ending. You're not sure whether you should be laughing or crying. And the rest of it is pretty damned good too.

As an indictment of war, Foxtrot is relentlessly clear in its intentions from the get-go, beating you over the head with its obvious political agenda in didactic, mostly overstated fashion. While Maoz's intentions are honorable, his cinematic choices - whether visually or narratively - left me feeling somewhat unmoved, if not annoyed. And that ending sucked camel balls.

Truly stunning, will haunt your mind for a long time. Not only is it impeccably filmed within an inch of its life, it's a remarkable mix of tonal shifts that all succeed -- one moment being as serious as possible, the next is filled with a sense of humour from these desperately bored soldiers, and the story allows these kinds of emotional changes. Although the title (as explained in the film) sort of acts as a spoiler for the penultimate events, their affect doesn't seem diluted.

The depiction of a desolate, god forsaken, almost dystopian, IDF post is phenomenal.

This could be a black comedy but it is played so straight that it is heart wrenching.

Foxtrot uses topical themes to deliver a bruising sociopolitical statement that's equally effective taken simply as an absorbing, well-acted drama.
