The seeds of a fine film are here, but Branagh's outrageously excessive and florid directorial tricks (to say the least) work against anything the movie has going for it, particularly De Niro's radically original, deeply moving interpretation of The Monster. Strange, sometimes laughable decisions prevail down the line, especially casting Cleese with comically wonky teeth in an ostensibly straight role, and Branagh's amping up of every emotion to Shakespearean levels of hysteria.

Way to spoil future generations from giving a damn about this literary classic, Mr. Branagh.

Worthless. Branagh amps up the melodrama present in but not key to Shelley's fantastic classic - and handles that melodrama piss-poorly, too.

So overwrought and ridiculous it’s the closest we could possibly come to a “Jim Steinman’s Frankenstein.” (The creation scene is one of the most unintentionally funniest scenes ever thanks to atrocious editing: https://youtu.be/Nm4jeqvA_JQ)

I was surprised by how much I liked this one; it isn't as gory as it could be (though some parts are still graphic) and it's a pretty good adaptation of the novel--some scenes were added in, but mostly it seemed pretty close to the book. The sets and costumes were gorgeous, and what I really liked was how the characters were so real; it was really a gripping, tragic, and emotional movie to me. The actors did a great job. Some parts were disturbing, but overall I thought it was very good.

Why must HBC's hair be the main feature of EVERY film she's in??? It's distracting as hell and I kind of cruelly cheered when it caught on fire. Also that whole bit with her as a monster, oh god, STOP, that never happened, why are you making it happen, this isn't making us feel extra pathos, WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS WHEN YOU COULD BE USING SOME OF THE AWESOME DIALOGUE SHELLEY WROTE??? Ugh. A shame, too, there was a hell of a lot of talent in this that never really went anywhere.

Mister Branagh creates a different kind of monster. It is a theatrical take on a classic novel - often overdramatic, always too self-confident. That doesn't stop me from liking it. Story, dialogs, and the way they are filmed, score, sets and lightning - everything has the touch of charming grandeur in it. My second favorite adaptation of the novel, and good movie on its own terms.

Frankenstein (1994) sticks much closer to the original story than any previously made Frankenstein movie, and the story is much better because of this. Unfortunately the movie was plagued with over-acting (the movie had way to many people shouting "Nooooooooooooooooooo!" Also, a few scenes which are meant to be dramatic just look really cheesy (I'm thinking of when The Monster pulled out another character's still-beating heart).

This one gets a bad rap. I can kind of see why... but ultimately, I think it's a frankenstein (heh) of things that work well and not so well. It's a very melodramatic and frenetic telling of Shelley's novel. The thing I expected to work least ended up working for me the most: DeNiro's monster is pretty good, and I'm sorry we didn't get more time with him; Branagh seems a little too keen to plough through the material and wow us with sweeping cameras and tragic spectacle.

For some reason, people and critics were not impressed. I find that hard to believe...but whatever! If you've ever read the book, you'll see that not only is the movie faithful...it's better! Everything about this movie is class...photography, acting, sets ands make-up. A top-notch horror film that is gruesome enough to please gore-hounds as well.

This version of Frankenstein is such a mixed bag of ideas. Kenneth Branagh brings his love of older English stories to the screen and does a relatively good job of directing this production. I liked that the sets felt a bit like a play. It was a little off-putting seeing John Cleese in a serious role. De Niro was fantastic in much of his role as the Monster. There was a cheesiness that ran throughout that I couldn't put my finger on. Was it on purpose? Was it because of time?

I don't know why thirty years down the line this has either been forgotten or spat upon while Coppola's Dracula has gotten a revisionist update of appreciation. Both are hilariously bad and it's obvious that Branagh was following Coppola's lead in being as unsubtle as possible. Also Dracula doesn't have a lube mudwrestling scene.

This is undoubtedly a melodramatic film but the original novel is very much melodramatic in tone. As a period drama its good and I thought both Branagh and DeNiro gave good performances in their roles. Its not full of jump scares, although there are a number. I found it relatively thought provoking and I assume its quite faithful to the book. The acting is perhaps a little over the top at times but it isn't 100% cliched or cheesy in a way that put me entirely off so I'd recommend it.

Shelley by way of Shakespeare. Branagh seeks scale in a bid to equal Dracula(1992), but he lacks Coppola's sense of daring and visual invention. The shots look big, but they are mostly artless, so nothing really stands out. The acting is similarly grandiose, but it's too po-faced for its own good, and there are no Hopkins style performances to balance out the misguided solemnity. In the end, it's just an overblown Hammer film, yet Branagh seems to be aiming for tragedy. A missed opportunity.

Multithreat Branagh's aggressive mounting of this movie succeeds admirably in its gala rendering of traditional Frankenstein "money shots" -- e.g., the lightning-lit creation sequence, wherein actor Branagh, as Dr. F., brings the Monster to life single-handedly. But he choreographs his film like an elaborate _Sound of Music_ audition: his characters are forever running, jumping, dancing, and flouncing like Trapp Family members trapped in an early Richard Lester flick.

Everyone seems to really dislike this movie, which is weird. It sticks closely to the book, has a great Gothic ambiance and flavor, and features a magnificent performance by none other than Robert De Niro. Screw you guys, this movie is great!

Brannagh's penchant for melodrama & grandeur, both as an actor as a director, works beautifully here. The cast is uniformly great, with De Niro & John Cleese (in a small part that proves he is capable of drama) as stand-outs, the sets look great and the music is appropriately bombastic. My only problem was the fact that, despite being a horror story, it is never truly frightening. Nontheless: an overlooked masterpiece.

Branagh gets a lot right, which isn't always a good thing. The pompous melodrama of the book finds it's expression in the overacted melodrama of the movie, and neither can be solely accredited to its time of making. Also, the book was never about reanimation, but the creation of life from scratch, thus the movie sacrifices key meta-aspects of the story. It's mostly entertaining and well done, and the closest adaptation out there, but the potential of the story still stays underused.

You know you're in for a ride when John Cleese gives the most understated, nuanced performance. Ken Branagh's Frankenstein is wall-to-wall ham and WILL SOMEONE TURN OFF THOSE FUCKING STRINGS, and as nice as it is to get a proper adaptation of the novel, Mary Shelley's philosophizin' drowns in the over-the-top pathos. But as a warning of what happens when bearded men tamper in the Goddess' domain, it has its use.
