Freaky Friday
2003
Comedy, Drama
1h 37m
The wide generation gap between Tess Coleman and her teenage daughter Anna is more than evident. On a Thursday night they have a big argument in a Chinese restaurant. Both receive a fortune cookie each from the restaurant owner's mother which causes them to switch bodies next day. As they adjust with their new personalities, they begin to understand each other more and eventually it's the mutual self-respect that sorts the things out.

This is the rare remake that improves on the original, and is actually a pretty ok young adult flick. The sharper contrast between the mom and daughter (uptight and prim vs. punk rocky) makes their switch more comedically potent, and Mark Waters (who also did Mean Girls) is apparently one of the only directors who can get a competent comedic performance out of Lohan. I mean, I don't want to overstate it - I certainly wasn't laughing my ass off by any means. But it's totally watchable.

I was expecting Freaky Friday to be purely terrible, but it manages to be just mediocre enough to save itself from the multitude of poor sections. Lohan is incredibly annoying throughout, it's overly cheesy and the whole basis of the plotline is just plain idiotic but it still manages to be surprisingly watchable. Undeneath though it is just another cheap, typically mindless family cash-in with no real redeeming aspects. Instantly forgettable.

The latest remake of Disney's Freaky Friday brings it screaming into the modern age with two suitably flawed and entertaining characters to hate and then root for. Lindsey Lohan does well in her part. The real reason to try this one is Jamie Lee Curtis. She give a hysterical performance as a teen trapped in an older woman's body. She leaves everything at the door many times and comes across as easily the best reason in the world to love this movie.

Horrible. Do people like this exist? Do they exist because movies like this tell them this is who they are and they believe because they lacked awareness of an identity of their own? So mall pop & conventional social norms dictate their entire sense of self & reality? And movies like this, which safely sandbox “diversions from the norm” allow them a brief illusory catharsis in the same way that the margarita-drunk secretary pool thinks Casual Friday & a Rocky Point timeshare are crazy living?

Or "Not Another Body-Swap Comedy!" - against all odds, this emerges as a complete and utter delight, thanks to a clever and witty screenplay that (all things considered) treats both characters and their situation(s) realistically; elevated to something sublime in the hands of Curtis and Lohan, both clearly having a ball - Curtis aces it, but Lohan is a genuine revelation. Perfectly pitched work from Gould, Harmon and even Murray in ostensibly "straight" roles just adds to the fun. Great stuff.

For such a gimmicky premise, it's surprisingly not terrible. I mean it 's very formulaic and has plenty of cheesy moments, but both Lohan and Curtis are enjoyable in their roles, and the film as a whole is competently made. You could definitely do worse as far as Family Comedy films go.

I think a lot of the bile spilled on this film is for what Lohan has done to her life and career since this film, rather than during it, because I think she is terrific in a demanding role, especially as the "Mum". OK, FF is definitely cringy at times, especially Chad Murrays horrendously embarrassing attempts to seduce JLC, but overall it is a lot of fun, moves at a good pace, and has a decent little message which is worth a couple of extra rating points.
