Worth watching as a novelty but neither the action nor humor are enough to make this work.A big problem is that by being thrust straight in, and having all the characters be cartoonishly idiosyncratic, i had no care for what happened or who lived or died. Ripping the emotional thrill of the firefight away all i could do was appreciate the novelty of everyone spending the film ob their bellies behind cover (perhaps the most realistic gunfight since Heat) and the excellent soundscape of gunshots

Wheatley doesn't know if he wants to ripoff Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs or John Woo's bloodbaths. The lack of a script -- a gun deal gone wrong, with shootout and comic bits in the process -- shouldn't bother, but it does in the case of a dude who can't film a 90-minute shooting properly. The idea that the groups start dissolving after some time, with every member realizing they can act individually, is good, but seems underdeveloped by cartoonish acting -- Copley is clearly in a Blomkamp movie.

I like the aesthetic well enough and the dialogue is pretty clever and quick-witted, especially in the early going. Maybe the initial shootout would have a little more purpose and gravitas were it not the idiot pawns that were the crux of the whole thing, but once the mid-shootout happens and the dark comedy kicks into full gear, this unfolds as a pretty enjoyable watch! Not the funniest comedy or the goriest/most violent shootout, but a very good combination of both. Totally worth checking out!

A shoot-out in a disused warehouse for the entire film, filled with plenty of violence, gun-shots, bullet-wounds, one-liners, and a bit of squishy gore. The cast is great and loads of fun, particularly Copley and Riley. Maybe I'm easy to please, but this was certainly my cup of tea.

Pretty entertaining thanks to a cast of colourful characters who've walked through a 70s costume department, but it must be said the film is largely style over substance. None of the characters have redeeming features, or at least enough to make them someone to root for. The gun battles are not that well choreographed and realism seems to go out the window early on. Wheatley seems to be imitating Tarantino, but aside from a couple of memorable set pieces the results are hit-and-miss.

In this otherwise irredeemable fairground of firm flatulence, Brie Larson single-handedly generates sufficient anticipation for some potentia salvātiōnis... without fear of spoiling Free Fire, as Wheatley himself has already succeeded in this respect alone, ultimately nothing can salvage this plot-less homage to Tarantino.

Free Fire offers gun fights, violence, quip-filled exchanges, a multitude of accented characters, an element of mystery, and enough levity to breath freshness into the crime genre. The film somewhat delivers on what it offers. The cast is stellar, but the characters are moronic to the extent of cringeworthiness. The plot plays out in an imitation-Tarantino fashion, and the resolution feels like something JJ Abrams would scribble on a napkin. I partially enjoyed the ride, but wasn't ever gripped.

Hammer and Copley stand out in a fun cast, but it can't escape the feeling of being an exercise in staying at a single location for an entire movie. And neither the dialogue nor the characters are as original or as fun as Quentin Tarantino's and Guy Ritchie's.

From an interesting premise to a boring execution. Free Fire has some fun character moments, but it's just a really badly directed mess. When nearing the end of the film and all of the remaining characters are tired, you can't help but be tired with them. Ugh.

This movie is not clever. It's not funny. It's not anything. Well, OK, it's really bad at visual storytelling. Which is boring at first and gets annoying in the end. And releaves the movie of any suspense or thrill. Well, the uninspired writing also takes care of that, I guess. It's trying to be like Reservoir Dogs, but only in very obvious and superficial ways. Here the characters aren't even idiots, they're just conveniently dense. As is the main conflict, which actually isn't one.

I certainly enjoyed it. It's basically Mad Max for shootouts, as has been said in here already, and in this it basically succeeds. There are some good laughs and gore; it's a fittingly ugly film where people spend most of it shooting at each other, hitting all kinds of limbs and then crawling around on the floor after they've been shot themselves. I think it loses some of its luster after a while, but as a simple genre piece it's fun and worth a view, especially to see a solid cast.

We find no cheery life lessons in the unremitting violence of Free Fire. No moral core. No heroes to root for. Just a lot of villains, a lot of wisecracks and a whole lot of blood. Wheatley clearly did not make this movie to impress Plugged In or its audience. To criticize the film for its lack of prudence seems a bit like criticizing a rabid wolverine for its poor table manners. Free Fire looks a lot like one of the 1970s polyester suits worn in the flick. It's loud. It's tacky.

One of the more thoughtful storytelling experiments in the action genre, FREE FIRE asks 'What if people in movies were as horrible shots as they are in real life?' The answer includes a lot of yelling, crawling, and coping with non-lethal wounds in real time, creating plenty of comedic curiosity and inevitable periods of boredom. But filmmakers Ben Wheatley and Amy Jump know when to turn the spigot back on, as the movie rediscovers the intrigue that made it sound appealing in the first place.

I really wanted to like this as I've enjoyed Wheatley's Sightseers and Kill List. I didn't really have knowledge of the film beforehand and expected it to move outside the factory location, but that's not the issue I had with the film. Free Fire feels like a debut from first time director who has seen Reservoir Dogs too many times and is eager to use all tricks of the playbook to top Quentin Tarantino. Characters are either bland or unlikable, and the dialogue tries to be funny but falls short.

Very enjoyable film about a deal gone wrong shootout/stand-off that takes up the vast majority of the film. It could honestly be shown in film classes as the gold standard in pacing. Free Fire is a movie consisting primarily of one protracted shootout. It only runs for 90 minutes - only about 65-70 of those are the aforementioned firefight - and it doesn't have any loftier ambitions than entertaining you with violence and making you laugh with its characters and their various quips and exchanges. I had a lot of fun with it. It didn't run out of steam and it was just creative enough to keep things interesting. Now, please, give Sharlto Copley a spin-off. [Full Review]
