Reminded me in different ways of The Lego Movie, Elf, The Matrix, The Truman Show. It perhaps wouldn't withstand too much scrutiny, but at face value it's a loud, colourful and funny bundle of fun. Went with my 8-year old computer game-obsessed son - he loved it, and this was probably a reasonably child-friendly introduction to the charms of Ryan Reynolds. Comer and Keery are likeable in their roles as well.

At one point of a montage of Guy saving NPCs, he pulls a little girl out of the way of a speeding truck. Just letting you all know that cannonically the game allows you to kill children. GTA thinks it's controversial. Eat your heart out. Also, this is above average harmless fun. But did they really need to put Captain America's shield, Hulk hands, AND a lightsaber in the climax right after each other. We get it, Disney. You own Fox. Get over yourself.

If you like Reynolds' snappy one-liners, then you'll be sold on this movie before the title comes up. It's certainly a fun and thrilling one, a lot of action, some nice laughs too, and a lot of amusing references to gaming. It was made with a lot of love, but in the end the impact, despite being powerful, was short lived.

This was WAY better than I thought it would be. I expected an atrocity and ended up getting sole very solid entertainment. Reynolds' sense of humor may eventually grow weary to me, but meh. He has his moments here. I liked all of the performances and was very surprised to see a comedy with genuine emotion and heart. I didn't laugh nearly as much as I was probably suppose to, and the kiss toward the end seemed a bit too convenient, but all in all, this was actually good.

Essentially a Matrix and Lego Movie mashup. There were concept level themes that, had they been delved into, would have elevated the movie. We are gods to AI and all things digital but do we know upon their creation, what they eventually can become? "You are the creator of this world, yet you cannot live in it." It doesn't mean the humour would have had to been scarified. But now it's just a safe jukebox remix PG comedy with jokes that too often don't land. But Reynolds IS dreamy!

If putting out bad trailers to lower audience expectation was their plan, they succeeded because this movie was a pleasant surprise. Not simply just an excuse for gratuitous action and explosions, Free Guy somehow finds a way to balance action with romance comedy in an unusual medley perhaps best described as the Lego Movie for adults/gamers. Relying heavily on current pop culture tropes, memes, and themes, it succeeds at most things it attempts to do & its talented cast manages to sell it, too.

Pleasently suprised by this one! Even if it loses it's momentum and gets more and more absurd towards the end it has a unique flavor overall. Maybe it's not a legit video game adaptation but it's one of the best video game movies i've ever seen! free guy is squarely aimed at kids, but that's ok. it does have a lot of cheesy and sappy stuff, though it never quite breaches the cringe limit. most of the plot is blatant rehash of the truman show, i guess the kids haven't seen that one. reynolds sells the character well but the rest of the cast are somewhat off their game. except for tatum, who kills it with the itchy kitty performance.

Free Guy is a movie you know you're not meant to take too seriously and just go along with the ride. That being said, how much you'll like it depends on your tolerance for Ryan Reynolds. He has good moments though, but a lot of jokes are very hit and miss. The film takes advantage of being creative and wacky. It starts out decent but loses steam around the halfway mark. I wasn't the biggest fan of Taika Watiti, unfortunately. It doesn't all work, but I got some enjoyment out of it.

A little bit Lego Movie, a little bit Truman Show and a big dollop of Saints Row the video game, Free Guy's story actually makes more sense than I was expecting it would and is a likable and mostly entertaining affair. Full enjoyment will probably depend on how familiar the viewer is with modern video game terminology and mechanics.

Probably the best Shawn Levy movie I’ve seen… for what that’s worth. Shades of everything from Truman Show to Ready Player One to Matrix to Edge of Tomorrow to Pleasantville. Was a little annoyed by most of its pop culture references being movie stuff rather than gaming stuff (Wreck It Ralph is ten years old and still the best at this). Didn’t know who most of the YouTube/Twitch gamer cameos were. Should have had the AVGN in there lol.

A fun PG rated Grand Theft Auto inspired film. It reminded me a lot of Ready Player One (no surprise it's written by the same guy) Has heaps of video game references (the best being a blink-and-you miss-it one, where a character is constantly trying to jump on a wall and then gets frozen) I think 14 year old me would have loved this, but as an adult it's still a fun ride. Would this be considered the best video game movie?

Better than I was expecting; still bad. Attempts to be the new generation’s Truman Show while also going for blockbuster action-comedy, and the result is a big, expensive mess with a ludicrous lack of depth and believability and very little comedy (the first joke is *sips coffee* “It’s like losing my virginity - in my mouth” and it doesn’t really improve). Jodie Comer almost pulls something off in her thankless role until the sickening finale.

Knew from the trailer that much of this would fall flat and I was right. That's not to say that there aren't some good jokes (Tatum was great), and of course I like seeing Reynolds always. I also love video games, so I can sit there and go "oh yeah I get that." But I just really didn't laugh very often and for something where the primary focus is laughter, that's a fail.

I also loved seeing Jodie Comer in something where she isn't a raving psychopath, though she plays both parts well. Excited to see more of her in the future. Repulsive garbage written by someone who neither understands how coding works nor how the game industry functions. This movie comes across like it's written by a boomer who made a cursory glance at gaming culture and pretends to know the ins and outs of it, which comes across as incredibly embarrassing to watch. This is made all the worse by its pretentious, self-masturbatory commentary on video game violence supplemented by some of the worst attempts at gamer jokes I've seen in a story.

Yet another "Ryan Reynolds make bad jokes for 2 hours" movie. This is nothing but a PG rated Deadpool/Van Wilder/Blade: Trinity film. Free Guy is reminiscent of Ready Player One in both setting & style, though playing (a little) less to nostalgia. Reynolds plays a Deadpool-type in a Lego-like world; much to his niche. Waititi overacts. Comer & Keery are good, but their RomCom B-plot feels quite clichéd. While not perfect, the film is well put together, consistently amusing and touches on a few interesting ideas, even if it doesn't take them that far. The ideation of reality being impact was nicely done by Howery.

Look I like the idea and the execution was actually alright but that main romance arc driving the plot just felt... uneasy to watch. Like a forced insert for the viewer, but done so poorly that it sucked the air of everything around it. I can't get over how bad some bits were, which overshadows some actually good ones. Too bad, nice try, do better next time (not getting horny boomers to write female characters would be a good start). Viva La Dirt League did this whole thing much better anyway.

A bit of The Lego Movie and The Matrix. Taika Waititi's wackiness distracted from Ryan Reynolds' optimism. To be fair to Reynolds, he's a lot more subdued than his usual typecast self. I'm not sure about the tacked-on romance at the end or the ridiculous villainy. Fav scene: the John Woo-esque motorcycle shooting in a circle scene.

An utter delight; played beautifully by its cast (I'll even go in to bat for Waititi) and full of witty, clever and hilarious lines, which nimbly pull the film up whenever it threatens to fall into plotting doldrums. Sort of a TOY STORY mixed with PLEASANTVILLE and THE TRUMAN SHOW but made special by Reynolds, who like Carrey before him finds a surprising well of empathy in his performance of bewildered naivety; the finale is even modestly touching in its way. An unexpected treat.

I liked the sound of this and its certainly fun in one sense but its no real Truman Show type film either. The visual effects/CGI is pretty decent, it has a decent cast and the main concept of a CGI character becoming 'real' is intriguing but it just doesn't have the same sort of real substance, in a philosophical way, as The Truman Show had/has. It's a pretty entertaining film and its worth seeing, it may even be a bit thought provoking perhaps but its not as good as maybe it could have been?.

As cagedwisdom pointed out, it's like Tron, Ready Player One, The Truman Show and Ryan Reynolds in a blender. But unfortunately, in this recombination, it came out with the emotional depth of Tron, the poppy plastic product placement of RPO, the Van Wilder of Ryan Reynolds and the comic timing of a lima bean. Shoulda been good, given the premise, but in hands of a writer with no charisma or imagination, even Ryan Reynold's comic talents can't save the terrible script.

It is an action-comedy version of The Truman Show. And I think having the new Bruce Willis (aka Ryan Reynolds) to have the leading role and not giving any relatable character development to the secondary charahters of the game clearly contradicts with the message of the film; they remain secondary to the lead actor's story. The only enjoyable moments were the cameos of Chris Evans and Channing Tatum.

For me, this gnostic narrative foundation is the common denominator (with knowing nods to They Live, Thirteenth Floor, and Dark City, while I'm at it) - which does not diminish but frankly enhances my appreciation. It's solid enough but not overall funny. The self aware, over the top slightly adult style jokes missed for the most part. However it is still a cool take on a romance story near the end and the action sequences look bad ass. Reynolds is a bankable star and it's not his fault. It's PG-13 in all regards and it both helps and hurts the film. It helps because they can utilize cameos and make it appeal to larger audiences, it hurts because it makes the jokes seem more juvenile and toned down.

Poor execution of a pretty interesting premise. For a movie that requires the audience to be familiar with video games it paradoxically seems to be made by someone who neither likes nor understands them. It spends a lot of its runtime with the romantic side of the story, which is the least interesting thing this movie could do with its plot.
