I would watch Connie Britton mother a high school football player. Wait, that was yesterday. Today it should be, I did watch Connie Britton mother a high school football player. There were some non Connie Britton scenes as well but I didn't pay them much mind.

Probably the least satisfying of what has become a multi-platform franchise. It's essentially an echo of the book with more of a focus on the competitive spirit than the ethnography (though the latter is present). The story of Boobie Miles is easily the best part because it doesn't shy away from the gravity, or perhaps lack thereof, of high school football in a kid's life. Its impact is thoroughly overshadowed by the astounding television series.

One of the better soundtracks in recent memory, and an entertaining watch. I still prefer the television show and completely agreed with Connie Britton sticking to her role.

In terms of believable plot evolution, I'd have been less surprised had the kicker started scoring 100-yard field goals by shooting the football out of his ass.

Over-hyped drama that captures the smalltown hysteria of texas high school football. Pace, tone, colors, directing all are fisrt-rate. But the TV show version blows the movie out of the water, so watch that instead before it gets cancelled.

Definitely one of the better football movies. It’s just at this point you can’t really reinvent sports movie. They mainly go down the same 2 or 3 story structures, and this is one of them three. However it’s grainy and dirty look kinda captures the atmosphere of this movie and produces some gritty tension. It also provides emotional subtext that kinda underlies this film. It’s really just a product of a limited genre, even as someone who likes sports as much as I do.

This movie faced an uphill battle from the start. I enjoyed the book, and I had never warmed up to the commercials for this movie. I finally watched it and it was what I thought it would be... overdone. I didn''t have a single character that I actually enjoyed in this film. It just didn't click for me. I thought the Boobie stuff was done up wrong (in my eyes after reading the book) too. And the way they ended that game was overblown too. Maybe this needed a documentary angle instead.

I found it to be entertaining and well-made. It actually felt like a condemnation of football and sports fandom for quite a bit of the film. I really liked how it the negative side of a whole town obsessed with a sport, and the unfair pressure put on these high school players and their coach. I wish the ending wasn't so cheesy and all "yay football!" but oh well. The performances were good, and the direction was excellent.

Suffers by needing to make football cool to a widespread movie going audience with ridiculously violent field action. It could've been a decent movie and it is slightly more realistic than a lot of football movies but it is still entirely too over the top when on the field.

I didn't think Friday Night Lights was anything special. Sports movies has the intrinsic ability to tug at ones heart strings. It easy to tell a story that tugs at the audience's heart strings while giving us plenty of heroes to root for. I didn't find much of the acting noteworthy. I liked the story but by the end of the movie I didn't think I knew enough about the characters. I felt the movie had too much football and not enough character development. I don't think I'll watch it again.

If you are not receptive to the unchallenged idea of sport as a lifeblood with an almost religious zeal, this film is likely to be a tougher sell; McGraw surprisingly delivers a quite forceful performance, but the lack of insight as to what drives him makes his character (and conflict with son) look goofishly silly. Not unbearable to watch; Thornton is oddly one-note and inscrutable as the coach with remaining cast members doing their best with some sketchily defined characterisations.

Every tackle is a body slam, every pass completed a feat of incredible athleticism, and momentum shifts in the game such that one team always dominates whenever the story necessitates it. Is this high school football or pro wrestling in cleats? (The short-lived XFL wasn't nearly this violent.)

Pretty bleak and even cruel at times for a movie of this genre, but the emotional payoff is everything. Really great production, even if the football playing itself was quite unrealistic.

A classy well intentioned slice of Americana which avoids the majority of sports film clichés, backed by a fantastic soundtrack from post-rock band Explosions in the Sky. Later followed up by a TV series with very little relation to the film, but with a similar bent on the lives of the lower-middle.

An intense account of a state runner up football team follows the live of some of it's players during that particular season. Very well acted, although the movie did feel a tad flat in some parts. What sets this flick apart from most others in its genre is the grit. This movie feels perfectly imperfect.

W4E1P2S1V1M2A2R3. Spawned one of the greatest shows ever, and damn good in its own right. Drastically sugar coats a much more complex and morally fraught book, but it captures the light side of the story perfectly, and might be the most well acted ensemble movie I’ve ever seen. Bill Bob Thornton might have been the worst actor in the film (and he nailed it)!

Certainly better than the average sports film, which was quite a surprise as Peter Berg usually directs somewhat forgettable flicks. Billy Bob Thorton helms an impressive cast who manage to really capture the highs and lows of a high school football team. In particular I was quite impressed with Derek Luke as the tragic Boobie Miles.

While this small West Texas town may come across as a whipping boy, it's merely emblematic of a more widespread problem. The truth is, many communities have been morally blinded by those same Friday night lights, turning football into a religion, and anointing high school kids as gods. If the film shocks those people into reordering their priorities and cutting their local athletic program some slack, it will serve a purpose. (pluggedin.com)

As far as high school sports movies go, it's miles ahead of the curve (and makes Varsity Blues look like a real joke). It probably helps that I grew up in Texas and went to every high school football game for three years. Also, the Friday Night Lights TV series on NBC is even better; if you're 99% of the population I promise you that it's the best show you're not watching.

A surprisingly impressive sports movie, which does a great job of depicting the ups-and-downs of the lives of high school athletes, especially through Boobie Miles, who stands in for every athlete who peaked in high school and went downhill from there. I do wish they had kept the championship game the same as in the book, though - the end result is the same, but the way the game plays out changes the tone.

One of the worst sports movies I've seen (Although I'm sure Redemption: Kickboxer 5 was better than this) with some of the oldest high schoolers in movie history. This movie focuses on an entire town of people who peaked in High School. The lives of the players go to utter shit the moment they lose, which when played straight like this movie plays everything, is hilarious. Nothing of this movie is redeemable. Everything is bad. Just watch college sports or pro sports ya losers.

Sure, it has a bunch of sports movie cliches, but when the presentation is as good as this I refuse to be bothered by them. The editing, cinematography and acting were all excellent, really sucking me into the movie. Which kinda surprised me as I don't even care for football! Also, any soundtrack that uses a whole lot of Explosions In The Sky gets three thumbs up from me.

A unique movie about life and our occasional struggle against futility and the meaning we make out of that struggle, Friday Night Lights isn't quite your traditional sports movie. The blunt realness of the story makes it stick with you and also makes its messages much more profound than most cliche outings of this genre. It's definitely worth a watch for sports fans and drama fans alike.

It was ok when it was about fotball until I checked the "Differences between the movie and actual events" section on Wikipedia and realized that almost all the football part was made up. It's acceptable with horror movies, but come on, aren't there enough interesting events in real football history to make a movie about one of them?

Is it really that hard to make a good football film?? Not even a glimmer of insight on life or football is relayed by this movie. there is absolutely no sense of nuanced storytelling shown by the director or writers; it's merely: here's the characters' problems...kickass[?] gameplay montages! woo!...character's problems get arbitrarily/spontaneously resolved (or worse, remain in limbo)...repeat unimpressive stock montage...end = crying followed by smiles. wtf???
