The 13th of October fell on a Friday so that day I invited some friends over and we watched them. All of them. 12 movies in 24 hours. Yeah, I'm cool like that. The kind of cool that puts you in a room with a bunch of dudes watching low budget murder porn including this 3D entry back when the word shameless hadn't caught on yet. The dawn of the hockey mask, but honestly, this should be remembered as Friday the 13th: The Barn Chapter.

What in the name of holy franchising is happening?! Is the series actually getting better as it progresses?! From the chicka-wow-wow 3D intro to the awesomely stereotypical 80s gang featuring Roxy and the cool kids, Jason finally dons the hockey mask and runs amok on Natalie Portman's older sister and her merry friends. Delicious nudity and silly "Is anyone there?" scares ensue. James Cameron pay heed: THIS is how 3D is supposed to be. Oh and fat kid: Cheer the fuck up.

Starts out spending time on some silly, highly 80s-cheesy rocker characters but, with great kills and a campy tone soon becomes fun as hell. In the terrific last act, Jason, now hockey mask-clad, for the first time gets some real resistance from a more sensible and able final girl. Also, I never thought I'd say this about any movie: With all the gimmick shots engineered to show off the technology, I'm dying to see this re-screened in 3D! (seriously)

The passage of time has given this much-derided series an almost quaintly retro charm; this is not an especially well-acted or directed entry but even viewed in 2D, its use of exaggerated 3D effects adds another level of amusement and compared with modern torture porn, the lack of focus on character's suffering makes it easier to digest as more casually silly entertainment. Also notable as the first time Jason goes widescreen, not that Miner does much with the extra screen space.

Before "Jaws 3-D"(1983), the 3rd film in the Friday the 13th series was the poster child for the terrible 80's 3-D fad. However unlike the OG blockbuster "Jaws"(1975), the Friday the 13th franchise is just right for this kind of gimmicky schlock. The cheesiest, campiest, and probably worst movie in the series might be, by far, the most fun yet. After 45 minutes of bad 3-D gags, "hockey mask" Jason is born by delivering a money shot 3-D harpoon blast right into a girl's eye, plus full mic drop.

Hilarious 3D staged shots, you come in expecting to see total carnage popping out of the screen but end up with yo-yos, juggling fruit, popcorn etc. People will hold things in ways no human has ever held anything (god damn stupid hippy and his popcorn bowl) Shelley is some awful Albert Brooks nightmare character but without him Jason would’ve never been born. They spent so much time trying to figure out how to get the 3D to work no one gives a shit if there’s a crew member in the shot or

An oddball mash-up of killing and bizarre directorial choices to exploit the 3D gimmick. All the characters were disappointing human beings - their deaths couldn't come quickly enough for me, especially the whiny "joker" with a perm. There were plenty of LOUD NOISE! fake-outs, flashbacks, some odd music, and a sense that all of this was taking place within a self-contained bubble. Is Jason invincible now? Very silly, rubbish, but curiously entertaining - I genuinely want to see this in 3D.

From a purely technical, quality based standpoint, this movie is significantly worse than the first two. It's certainly not scary, like the first two managed (at least, occasionally). I do not care, and have decided to skew my rating dramatically towards "level of entertainment," which was substantial, my inner critic be damned. There's only so many "awkwardly pointing objects at the camera" shots I can take before I really start enjoying myself.

The only sequel that is actually decent. The addition of the hockey mask turned Jason into an icon, but this is terribly dated. That being said, it's just another boring, pointless and stupid slasher film from the 80s. But, just like the first, it's one of my ultimate guilty pleasures.

Friday the 13th: Part III is a terrible film in a series that's not very good. It re-hashes moments from earlier chapters, does nothing original for itself, and absolutely ruins any attempt at immersion by presenting itself to us in 3D and needing to use that effect every now and then. The acting is bad, the dialogue makes you cringe, the kills are dull, the killer is seen far too much, and the entire experience feels at least an hour too long, even though the film only plays or 95 minutes.

I'm watching this a few days away from going on a trip to a cabin, and man, if we run into a hobo sleeping in the middle of the road brandishing a disembodied eye, I'm just turning tail. I'm also banning handstands and harpoon guns at the cabin. Gotta be safe.

It's funny how Jason is a horror icon. And yet, not only does he not appear until the second movie, but when he did, he didn't yet even have his famous hockey mask. That wasn't until Part 3. Seeing Jason don the mask is a major highlight of the film. Beyond that, it works just the same as the first two movies. But, by this point, the formula was starting to grow rather thin. And having been filmed in 3D, it does get indulgent on the effect. Still, those who like the first two should like Part 3.

(2016 Jasonthon #3:) Pretty lazy, even by the standards of a typically lazy subgenre. All the echoes of the first film - from just redoing the Kevin Bacon kill with the pregnant girl to redoing the first film's surprise ending but now with Jason's mom, I guess - just betray a lack of confidence to do anything different. The film's attempts to invest us in its characters are cringey. The climactic chase between Jason and the final girl is ok, and I liked the Jason face in this film.

"Friday" Part II was a worthy successor to the original film but Part III (or should I say 3D) isn't quite up to snuff. The good thing is that Jason is as good as in part II and even gets his iconic hockey mask in this entry. The cabin looks great in this film, especially by the end where it is lit by flickering candles and a wind storm is brewing outside. Unfortunately there are some pointless scenes and a lot of 3D pandering (it was shown in 3D). Still enjoyable but weaker than its predecessor

Keeping the "high standard" of the previous chapter and gloriously campy in all it's early 80s fashion. Though I didn't watch this in the intended 3D, the various wooden staffs pointing towards the camera throughout the film (be that Baseball bats, garden utilities or harpoons) gave a good sense of how the makers utilized the technology.

So much of this movie doesn't make sense that the parts that do are genuinely surprising. How much did a few books hurt Jason? How did our protagonist miss with a knife that many times from point black? These are not the questions a movie should make us ask. However this was the sequel to turn Jason into an icon, and rightfully so. A mask and a genuinely cunning Jason are far more scary than a mindless beast. Not awful here, just lacking.

It's crass and crude and dated, it looks as if it was shot on the cheap, the scenery is plain, the characters are stereotypes, and the effects are laughably bad at times. Then, that's all part of the charm of an 80s slasher film. Friday the 13th Part 3D is about as perfect an example as any of what the genre was all about and, if not taken at all seriously, it can be a lot of fun.

The formula is strong with the franchise by this point. The series is already starting to feel similar and predictable and we're only on part 3! Better kills do not make up for even worse dialogue and a final girl who gets barely any screen time till she's the only one left. At least the side characters had some personalities.

Jason finally gets his hockey mask but generally this entry feels like a cheap cash-in, lots of lame pandering to the 3D crowd so yo yos and broom handles are always pointlessly flying at the screen. Some of the dialogue is so fun and trashy it almost seems surreal but too much of a mess overall to be enjoyable and can get grating.

This is "the one with the jewfro guy". Thanks to the jewfro guy, the mask appears and we have the Jason of pop culture. Aside from the mask, nothing here really adds to the Jason legend - it could have been any psycho doing the killing. The scenes that were made to be "impressive" in 3D stick out badly. There are some good kills, like the arrow in the eye. The head squish was a bit much, but it got a good laugh out of me. This is the first one where they imply that Jason is dead at the end.

I saw all of them at least up to the 8th, but in my memory I can hardly tell them apart. Of the major slasher franchises, Friday the 13th is the most boring.

Aaaand here's where the F13 franchise gave up - ironically, it's only in this movie that Jason becomes the classic Jason, hockey-masked and unstoppable. But at this point, nobody involved is interested in doing anything but coming up with ways to kill teenagers (in 3D, at that!) Yeah, the speargun shot is a classic, but where the first two movies at least tried to give me a reason to (s)care, this one just stumbles brainlessly forward to the next kill.

Those who saw this for the 3D certainly got their money's worth, w/ the director throwing everything he can at the audience to the point of absurdity: popcorn, juggled balls and yo-yos. The rest of this is as bad as you'd expect except for an extended climactic chase, an unexpected interlude w/ a gang & the promise of 2 mysteries being revealed: why didn't Jason kill the lead the first time he had her & are the characters at Crystal Lake or not? Neither one, of course, is answered.

It starts slow but gradually picks up as the film progresses. This was my first Jason movie and I must admit I actually enjoyed it. The gore effects are bad, the acting is poor, the plot is hokey, and typically if a movie has one of these negatives checked I would have reviewed it poorly. However, amazingly with all of these combined it makes for a really fun time. Watch this movie with friends and have a great time doing your own impromtu Mystery Science Theater-esqe bashing.

The second sequel to the 1980 slasher fails to show signs of innovation or originality, has a very limited scope and is not short on ridiculous moments, not to mention the sketchy plot, typically amateurish acting and dialogues or cardboard characters. Yet it delivers the goods when it comes to the suspense, including a couple of genuinely scary moments, some brutal kills and a climax in which the final girl really puts up a fight. Also, it's the film in which Jason finally dons his iconic mask.

This version does not give anything new for the serial. It has again a new environment (not at a camp this time), but it is still only recycling ideas from the previous versions. Movie was made in famous 3D and film is full of camera poking objects. Story itself is lousy, illogical and boring. Jason wears for the first time his trademark hockey mask, but story does not give reasonable idea why he starts to do it. Action focuses a lot in a barn. One character is reading Fangoria (!).

First off we have to talk about the Yo-Yo scene and every 3D focused kill. Basically the Real Life trailer but done seriously. I miss baghead Jason. This film does confirm Miner is a at least a capable director and miles ahead of Cunningham. He understands what makes Jason and the the film in general work and is able to shoot the film accordingly. A bit too tedious, but still better than the first one for sure.

The kills are mostly a combination of the first two movies as are most of the plot points. They added one interesting kill and two original scenes, the first being the iconic hockey mask and the second being the forgotten Jason rape flashback. I didn't mind the characters or the retreat of kills and story from the other movies but I found the 3D gimmick to be distracting and annoying. This was better than some but not as good as others, a standard middle of the road kind of movie.

The 3D shots provide laughs, and it is better paced than most other installments in the original series. This is a good comedy. The teenagers are mostly boring, but there's a hip biker gang consisting of three people who look better suited for a 1995 textbook. Also, this was made for primitive 3D, and it's an easy thing to forget while watching in 2D, so the framing keeps doing weird shit and you're like "WHY!! OHHH the goddamn 3D!!" Spears on strings flung toward the camera and such. Also three books incapacitate Jason. This is dumb fun.

Once again Steve Miner has delivered a bland and unmemorable experience, a fact nearly as shocking as this film, which is to say not at all. The kills are much better than in Part II, but that's about the only nice thing I have to say about Part III. The 3D is obnoxiously bad. The set is the most forgettable yet. A huge improvement over the first two: Giallo-esque, flashy killing scenes and a nice climax in which we learn the franchise most popular rule -- Jason always comes back from the dead. We see more of Jason's skills, not just his mask, but the storytelling doesn't quite work -- it's about a girl going back to the place where she was attacked by a man with a horrendous face; she ends up living, killing him with an axe but dreaming about his mom coming from the lake to grab her.

I can't believe it took three movies for Jason to don the iconic hockey mask. For the most part, this movie is standard slasher movie fare, but one factor kinda tarnishes it: It was very obviously in 3D originally. This means every other scene will have a baseball bat pointed directly at the camera in the middle of the frame, or guys juggling, or someone playing with a yo-yo, for no reason other than a 3D gimmick that probably nobody will be seeing.

Third entry opens w/ another pointless flashback to the previous installment, followed by a shamelessly lazy romp involving Natalie Portman and friends, and an apparently invincible Jason [looking not entirely dissimilar to one of Korine's trash humpers, sans hockey mask]. Were the film inclined to offer one a reason to give a fuck, there might almost be smthng to be said for a surrealist reading, with, like, basic character continuity and remotely normal logic completely defenestrated. But nah.

Jason finally gets his mask and the series gets cheesier as the 80's progresses. There are multiple comedic sidekicks that provide goofy - and occasionally painful humor, and the connection to Crystal Lake Camp and the previous films is quite thin. It's also in 3-D which means you get a lot of unnecessary shots that just show off the 3-D effects. Still, the increased amount of gore and the fully evolved Jason result in a quite effective final 30 mins that lift the film above the 2nd part.
