A really easy-to-watch comedy, with some decent laughs and just enough plot to keep things interesting. Ice Cube is a watchable anchor for the shenanigans, Tucker brings a nervous, likeable energy to his role, but it's Witherspoon who brings the most funny - he's a riot. There's some nice music to enjoy throughout as well. If I was picky, I'd say it was a bit self-serving on Ice Cube's part, but it's not a problem; it's no "A Star is Burns". Watch if you need to disengage your brain for a bit.

I'm biased as Ice Cube's "It Was a Good Day" is my favorite music video ever. And here, again working with F. Gary Gray, he expands on a single day narrative. Drawing influence from CLERKS, this is a hip-hop hood film more aligned to the hilarious records of De La Soul than N.W.A's drama. And oddly enough it is a coming-of-age story, as Craig learns a lesson he should've picked up earlier. It's funny, although a little of Chris Tucker goes a long way, and it could've done without one flashback.

What makes Friday good is the humor is silly but never preposterous. The characters never take themselves too seriously and there is no deep moral message beyond two guys hanging out in a suburban "hood" on a Friday. This is a perfect depiction of life in the CA suburbs but it could have been anywhere in America. This is probably the most convincing role Ice Cube has been in since he's probably just acting like himself.

Being a white guy who grew up in suburbia I can't really act like this film touches me in any profound way (not like The 'burbs or Disturbia), but I do think it's pretty damn funny. It was nowhere near perfection, but they kept it relatively simple and it was somewhat believable as a storyline for one day for these characters. Possibly Chris Tucker's best role.

I don't really watch a lot of Ice Cube and I'm not a fan of Chris Tucker, but this may be their best performances and they've got a lot of good chemistry to keep the film rolling. I thought it was a decent movie and it had a few laughs in there as well. I would say it's worth watching for the story and the acting.

Friday is an analogue of Clerks - it's a movie about nothing more than hanging out on a front porch and dealing with everything that comes with being an immature young man in the hood. The movie delivers that premise with lots of humor, character, and a meaningful depiction of coming-of-age struggles.

I rented this when I was young so that I could talk about it among all the cool "older kids" (mind you, I was like, eleven at the time.) I didn't have a goddamn clue what the hell this movie was about back then, and it kinda scared the shit outta me. Upon a more recent re-watch, I concluded that it's some real basic, mindless stoner humor that I'm not a fan of.

We are going to show it wasn't always like some Boyz in the Hood nightmare constantly, there will only be one drive by shooting scene. It's fun to watch a movie and find out where some meme gifs came from. There's great characters here but it's not that funny. I hate that I know I'm going to enjoy the Christmas themed sequel for this film the most, I'm in a cold sweat over it.

It doesn't astound the audience, outside of Tucker actually being competent and perhaps even a little bit likable, but it's a fun enough comedy about a couple of dudes lazing around, smoking weed and talking shit. Not as funny as it could have been, but some good laughs exist like, "I saw the window open so I said 'fuck it.'" What makes it a little bit better than an average comedy is that I found myself caring for the characters.

Standards for 'hood comedies' are so low that this modest film is now considered a 'classic' of its genre. Its main selling point in the mid 90's was its novelty, which has since been eroded by two sequels and numerous copycats. It's sporadically funny, mostly due to the efforts of Witherspoon, whose role as Cube's dog catching father should have been expanded, and Tucker, in his film debut, whose motormouthed stylings steals the show. Cube/Pooh's script is mediocre, and Cube can't act.

What I really love about 'Friday' is that, behind all the weed and poop jokes (which, admittedly, make me laugh, as juvenile as they might be at times), it has some serious heart and soul at its core in depicting the power and importance of community and family. It's a film that goes from Feel Good to Feel Great, and for that it means a whole lot more to me than I ever expected.

Written, produced, starred by Ice Cube, with an annoying self-consciousness that just spoils most of the comedy here -- all the girls want Craig, Craig does not smoke weed, but when he does, he gets cooler!, Craig saves the day by punching Deebo and making the neighborhood safer --, but somehow charming in its LA's sit-back, lazy setting for a true sit-back, lazy hood comedy. Whenever Chris Tucker is on screen, it gets better with his physical comedy and his wacky way of talking.

This is an excellent lazy day comedy. Ice Cube isn't a phenom of an actor, but he's more than adequate in this role. Chris Tucker really should stick to roles like the one he played in this, because the guy is absolutely hilarious. For what this movie is, it's excellent. The only reason you wouldn't laugh is if you lack a soul.

I was genuinely surprised that a relatively cliche comedy about growing up, flowing with silly and gentle humour, managed to stealthily draw me in enough to shout "oh, fuck" toward the end. Despite having no connection whatsoever to any urban black community, this was infinitely relatable and very easy to just fall right into. Not a bad experience for just happening to catch on TV one night when I ain't had shit to do.

Grading this lower than when I first saw it bc Tucker's unique schtick became tired for me. But at the time the persona that made him $$$ was fresh and hilarious. Even now, as a blessedly non-Woke Latino, his caricature of the Spanish accent still makes me LOL. There's alot of shock humor here too which mostly still works - just less so. It's also interesting to see Ice Cube inadvertently (?) highlighting that the biggest daily problems (& solutions) come from inside the community, not outside.

Standard disclaimer – stoner movie alert! If you’re susceptible to the genre, you’ll have an even better time, but this is still one of the better, more focused efforts, with Cube and Tucker making for an enjoyably laid-back pair; the whole film is surprisingly benign and likable, which makes some of the genre attributes easier to take, like an absence of plot and sputtering pacing. Nice supporting bits for an enthusiastic supporting cast, especially Witherspoon’s scatological adventures!

They did a lot with so little. There are essentially just two locations in this (the front stoop and the corner store) and they made it seem like it's whole little world. Ice Cube and Tucker together are a great comedy team. They play off each other really well and Chris Tucker is a great comedic actor. Not a lot "happens" in this film. It just feels like a lax summer day. The final confrontation is okay, but not really necessary. it has a message but laughs are most important

Fits nicely with the Do-Nothing genre that saw its peak in the 90s, which sounds like an easy way to make a film, but I'd argue the genre died out for good reason. Friday spends most of its time on a front porch, but it never gets boring, and there's a real low simmer of stakes at all times that keep us invested. Silly but grounded.

I found this super boring and not really that funny. I'm not even sure why, maybe I just wasn't as invested as I thought I could be. Ice Cube is really struggling with comedic acting here but so much of the film relies on him it doesn't make the occasional sideshows of the supporting cast worth it. I had high hopes, and that pun made me laugh more than this film :(

It's very well written; it know actually how to keep the pace and keep what's basically a one location movie from stalling by inserting other characters into a scene at the right time or to change the location for awhile. What kept me from enjoying this hangout movie more is that Chris Tucker is still annoying plus his character is kind of a shitty douche, putting his friends life in danger. John Witherspoon as Ice Cube father is the funniest and best character in the movie.

Just rewatched for the first time in maybe 20 or 25 years and am updating my previously lukewarm score a bit. Still doesn’t have a ton of truly laugh out loud bits for me (“comedic” drug trips basically never make me laugh) but compared to today’s comedies it has an effortless and breezy watchability and flies by. Gotta disagree with the Chris Tucker haters in the reviews here - he fell off quickly, but he was iconic for the first few years there, this movie thru Rush Hour 1 or so.
