This raucous rom-com chronicles the relationship of two busy singles, Dylan (Justin Timberlake) and Jamie (Mila Kunis), who agree to include sex in their friendship -- minus the emotions and commitment. But things get complicated when Dylan (inevitably?) falls for his gal pal. Patricia Clarkson co-stars as Jaime's hip mom and Woody Harrelson plays Dylan's practical confidante, who advises him to man up when he pursues the newly dating Jamie.

Letting the audience know you're aware of stupid film conventions does not give you a free pass to indulge them. In the words of Walter Chaw, "Being aware that you're stupid doesn't always make you meta -- sometimes it just means you're tragically self-aware and no less stupid." (See also: the Scream series.) The Alzheimer's subplot is almost horrifying in how blatantly it's used only as a plot device to stir the leading man to his inevitable, sigh-inducing epiphany.

God awful. I walked out & so did another couple. As bad as u'd expect from what looks like (AND IS) a movie made by & for people who think the MTV awards shows are even remotely funny. Worse, the film seems 2 think its glib, tossed-off romantic leads' frenetic meth-addict "banter" makes the film remiscent of the classic black & white romantic comedies of the past even though it's festooned w/ up-2-the-minute pop culture trends & any1 older than 25 will probably want 2 blow their brains out.

Tries to be as self-aware as possible perhaps to hide the fact that it has absolutely nothing insightful or perceptive to say about relationships. The good cast makes the film an almost enjoyable experience. Emphasis on the almost.

Every bit as predictable and middle-of-the-road mainstream sex comedy as you would expect from the trailer. Virtually nothing about this film is memorable, original, or magical. Just another Hollywood churn-em-out date movie to keep young impressionable people with no sense of taste subscribing to streaming services.

I admit I don't like romance-comedies, but for some reason I was expecting more from this. Unfortunately I got the usual predictability and lack of realism that I've come to expect from this kind of movie. It was not all bad though, it had a couple of funny moments; easily the most interesting bit of this movie was Woody Harrelson.

Took some time to go along with the movies' rhythm, but once I did it was enjoyable enough. However, the movie lost me again in its third act: Timberlake is fine as a fun-loving, cocky guy, but he isn't convincing enough when it comes to the drama; and for all its jabs at schmaltzy rom-com faire, Friends refuses to stray away from the trappings of the genre. You never feel like these two people won't end up together by the end of the movie, even though they were more interesting as friends.

Reminds me of the Scary Movie films: It has the self-awareness to point out the tropes of the genre, but is unable to subvert, satirize, play with, or otherwise comment on those tropes in any meaningful way, meaning all of its attempts at meta-humour are kind of pointless. Unlike Scary Movie, however, this actually has a couple of decent jokes and leads with good on-screen chemistry, even if they are otherwise privileged, unlikable 1%ers.

overall rather disappointing. justin timberlake and mila kunis were an awful match. there was no chemistry, no romance. another problem with the film was the fact that in an effort to seem new-age, all the characters spoke in witty jokes and loud, abrasive voices for me, the film fell flat, to the point where it was borderline misogynistic and it made me like mila and justin just a little less.

Been done before? For sure. Been done ALREADY THIS YEAR? Definitely. If you watched "No Strings Attached", you were probably like me and hesitant to watch this movie at all. But y'know, I actually think you're missing out if you pass it by. A constant stream of amazing interconnected one-liners, with great leads and a great supporting cast make it an enjoyable watch. It loses points for a tossed-on (and tossed-aside) dramatic sub-plot, and obnoxiously-long sex scenes, but worth an eventual rent.

Yes it's been done a million times before and it's clichéd and predictable and mindless and yes, these have sadly become traits we come to expect of a romcom. However, "Friends with Benefits" somehow manages to feel very "fresh" (as much as I hate the word). The humour is great and the characters are strong, even if there are some good secondary characters who sadly get relegated to the position of plot devices. It even manages to poke fun at itself, which can be kind of charming.

I appreciate what this film was trying to do. It was trying to de-stigmatize casual sex, but, in doing so, I feel like the film felt a little too proud of itself for taking such an "unconventional" approach to a rom-com. This is a movie that feels like its trying to be edgy. It tries to be bawdy, but veers more toward blunt vulgarity. The leads may fail to sell a lot of the jokes, but at least they have chemistry.

Soooooooooo this movie is sort of funny and Kunis/Timberlake had a really fun, believable chemistry. However, its attempts to make fun of other romantic comedies became futile when it fell victim to the same cliches its predecessors have made. All in all, it is just another banal romantic comedy without a shred originality in it. I wouldn't waste my time on it again.

Another Will Gluck film in the books and once again, I love it! I usually wouldn't rate a romantic comedy this high but this movie had both good things for men and women. Justin Timberlake of course for the women and Mila Kunis for the men. Although I must admit Justin Timberlake is a much better actor than singer. Mila Kunis was also a little firecracker in this movie. I laughed, teared up and laughed some more. This film is a little raunchy so be wary. I thought it was just great!

Not that bad -- the best type of friendzone is here, I guess --, mainly because it makes fun of other (and worse) romcoms -- that film-within-a-film set in NY is really funny --, but Gluck eventually protects his characters from a much more disturbing climax -- I know some friends that used to hook up, and they are simply not friends anymore. Yeah, feeling hurts, but this one goes for the easy, actually film-like, finale. (Oh, Harrelson as the gay sports editor is just brilliant.)

Friends with Benefits is a mostly funny, sometimes sweet romantic comedy that is overlong and also ends up falling into the same clichés that it begins mocking. It starts off smart and hip, and while it's witty throughout, the screenplay puts its characters through exactly the same things that they made fun of earlier, which left me wondering what to feel. Still, it's funny and it has quite a few genuinely enjoyable parts, so if you're looking for a rom-com to watch, you can do worse.

Highly enjoyable and entertaining romantic comedy, with Timberlake and especially Kunis making for charming and attractive leads, with reliably excellent support from Clarkson and Jenkins. Perhaps Harrelson's role feels somewhat extraneous, and tightening of the mid-section would have helped, but film is successful for its surprisingly frank sex scenes, and the honest humour which is succesfully mined from its central situation, and its various ramifications.

The dialogue is witty and played to perfection from the two leads. The film's goal was to take the conventions of the typical romantic comedy and turn them upside down. This isn't anything new or ground-breaking, but for the most part, it works. It doesn't quite develop into this original piece of comedy, but in the end you feel satisfied thanks to the pairing of Timberlake and Kunis and their fantastic chemistry.

I realize that 'Friends with Benefits' has been done before. It's eerily similar to this summer's 'No Strings Attached', but treats the subject matter with the R-Rated respect it deserves. It gets around lack of originality by admitting it via a movie-within-a-movie. They make fun of every cliche in rom-coms then promptly follow through with it themselves, seemingly unable to realize the irony. It's all there, but Timberlake's Dylan and Kunis' Jamie make it work. It's a fun and harmless rom-com.

Once again Gluck tackles a genre with its fair share of cliches and tries to be meta about it before falling into all the same trappings at the end. Its obsession with making fun of romcoms is sometimes funny (the film-within-a-film is good) and sometimes just annoying. Also the complete disregard for continuity in the editing is frustrating.
