Fairly entertaining time capsule of 80's popular genre flippancy that pits teenage sexual insecurity & middle-aged professional insecurity against the indomitable force of Chris Sarandon with his shirt open. Quite obviously dated but it has just enough craft & affection put into it to come off mostly charming. The all around good casting, fun practical effects & well balanced tongue-in-cheek horror tone manage to carry it through even when the script starts to rapidly lose steam towards the end.

Personal favorite. Dated in the way that it looks like they used effort to create the effects which, of course, went out of fashion in the nineties. Unless I'm wrong, and I'm never wrong, that is one great vampire. In hindsight though, I support the casting of Colin Farrell in the reboot as a somewhat less questionable sexual force to reckon wythh. Sorry, with. For some reason my palms are sweating.

I enjoyed this more than Lost Boys. There's a better understanding of horror movie history--best exemplified by the Peter Vincent character. It also grasps how the horror genre has moved from quiet scares to slashers. The lead is a grounded teen; a typical nerd lost in his own overactive imagination. It loses minor points for a poorly drawn secondary villain and some dated jokes. But overall it's a well-made horror comedy with great attention to visual storytelling.

By far the best vampire movie that had come out of the 80's and possibly any decade preceeding it. You can argue for "The Lost Boys" if you want, but I stand by my statement.

This starts out looking like another dumb assembly-line teen-horror comedy. The pace picks up considerably, however, once Ragsdale, Bearse, and Geoffreys are usurped by polished pros Sarandon and McDowall (the latter aptly tacky as hack-actor-cum-horror-show-host Peter Vincent). From that point on, this wisely leaves the low comedy behind and shifts into high fear gear. Sarandon's vampiric transformations rank among the best, while a femme bloodsucker sports the champ vamp choppers of all time

Chris Sarandon is crazy good in this. He combines everything cool, sexy and frightening about vampires in films while not forgetting that this is a comedic film and keeping it funny. The supporting cast was also good, even when the acting wasn't especially strong I liked them. The FX are dated, but fun, and they get done what they needed to do. Very easy to recommend.

A wonderfully 80's type horror movie where nothing is scary at all and the performances are camp brilliance. There are interesting gore special effects here that are hilariously dated like the flapping rubber bat monster or the melting skeleton. The acting is oddball and adds to the weird atmosphere and charm. Geoffreys, McDowall, and Sarandon in particular are great but everyone does a good job without hamming it up too much with self awareness. Definitely a classic for 80's horror fans.

Fright Night is a blast. It is obviously that everyone involved is also having a good time, except for Evil Ed, he is having the BEST time. On top of the energy, there is some great creature work and a guitar wailing soundtrack. What's not to like?

I think the movie kind of fails to be on the level of Sarandon's performance. There is one superlative scene, however, wherein Sarandon, donning a Wesley Crusher-like sweater, seduces a teenager in a hoppin' night club with swirling spotlights. Its composition is superb and alluring. The rest of the movie I could take or leave.

Absolutely freaking astounding practical effects, including a genuinely emotional vampire death scene. The main character is one of the more insufferable '80s teen boy leads, but of course, Roddy McDowell steals the stage as the Vincent Price/Peter Cushing mashup. Plus, it's full of very fraught but very powerful queer vibes. Now if only they hadn't had the extended scenes of a (theoretically) teenage girl being seduced by the very adult-looking vampire...

Embodying everything that is great about 80s horror, "Fright Night" is a criminally underrated gem that is nigh on impossible not to love, mostly thanks to Stephen Geoffreys and having Jack Skellington as the main villain.

A gay or rather bi couple moves next door, and a young man has trouble competing with their greater sexual sophistication. Has some charm and wit, with above average performances, but the second half succumbs to a tedious special effects extravaganza and predictable narrative "arc" (as they say in Hollywood-land), with the result that the whole shebang wears out its welcome quite some time before the credits roll.

A good mix of comedy and horror, that's both funny and actual scary and tense full. What works for the movie most is that it's all played straight without any tongue in cheek self-awareness. While still clearly being a lovely homage to older horror movies. It's having fun with the genre without making fun of it. One can also read it all as an allegory of a teenage boy fear about his own sexual awakening; an older lookalike is the ultimate manifestation of a sexual predator.

Fun movie with a strong concept and a pair of great performances from Roddy McDowall and Chris Sarandon. The effects and make-up team deserve all the credit in the world here, as some of the movie's best moments stem from the vampire transformation sequences -- particularly an unused puppet left over from Ghostbusters that is truly frightening. For a comedy, it's a pretty laughless movie. Campy, sure. Funny? Not really. There's plenty of room for improvement here, hopefully the remake is better.

Definitely a lot more enjoyable than its recent remake (which I saw before this one). Does a fine job with the protagonist's sense of paranoia and isolation, it has a great soundtrack, and some of the near-thirty-year-old special effects were more interesting and engaging to me than the vast majority of CGI effects I've seen on the big screen in the last couple years. The vampires are way, way too weak to crosses though, to the point it feels like a cheat to let the heroes win.

Teenager Charlie Brewster (William Ragsdale) is sure his new neighbor is a vampire, but his friends don't believe him. So he enlists the help from the host of a local horror TV program named Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowall, having a ball) to help him. Chris Sarandon ("Child's Play") is effective as the seductive vampire who soon targets Charlie's girlfriend (Amanda Bearse). Can Charlie out-race time to save her? One of the best horror entries of the 1980's!

Saw this as a kid and was genuinely scared shitless. Today, seeing it as an adult, the special effects are more comical than frightening. (Except for the guy melting. When you have a guy melting, it doesn't have to be good to be scary.) On the other hand I am now able to appreciate the homage to classic horror movies.

After witnessing a series of strange events a horror-loving everyteen suspects that his neighbor has been vamping it up and seeks out a fugazi TV Drac for help. FN starts out like a fun cross between Rear Window and The Burbs but since there is NEVER a question that this guy is indeed, a vampire, there is little suspense and the non-believers come off as clueless morons. Keep your 80s horror cliche scorecards at the ready, because this one has it all, including the "it's not REALLY over" ending.

For a cheap 80's vampire flick, this is actually watchable. Roddy Mcdowell is great, and Prince Humperdink makes a decent vampire. Evil Ed show's all the girlish talents that will make him a great future gay pornstar (that's acutyally true. Look it up on IMDB).

A film of two distinct halves – the first is a jokey, campy call-back to Hammer horror which never quite works because of slippery tonal issues; the second half (from the wonderful nightclub scene on) works much better as a genuinely creepy, sincere tribute to its forebears, utilising some still convincing effects work as the film builds to an outlandish climax. A fine cast almost ties it together (Sarandon and especially McDowall capture just the right tone throughout).

This was such a fun movie. The plot is great, the special effects and make-up are awesome and it's just a whole lot of fun to watch. From the creepy neighbor to the TV vampire killer, a wolf that sounds like a lion, a vampire bat, and the always spooky house, it's just ludicrously entertaining to watch. It is fine with making fun of itself and the genre as a whole, but also provides for some nice thrills despite its age.

Even with plot holes I enjoyed this 80's oldie very much. There was a lot nice puppet transformations and in the end the green oozing... something was hilarious though they never really explained who the heck it was. There was also some amount of necessary erotism and luckily they did not overloaded it with too much comedy.

Like Night of The Creeps, F.N mixed scares and laughs with a respectful tongue in cheek attitude towards the genre a full decade before Scream came along and took all the credit. It helped bring vampires back in vogue, and it's unfortunate that all the exaggerated 80's-isms obscure both its novelty and its influence. It's a quality teen horror with a light comic tone that is well paced and features charismatic turns by Sarandon and McDowall as the head vampire and hammy TV host respectively.

Such an amusing piece of typical 80s flick -- great make-up special effects, a suburban comedy dealing with coming of age issues and discoveries, at least one scene showing bare tits --, but also a confident, affective look into the lives of a couple of fiction lovers -- the horror film buff, the TV brit character who chases vampires -- facing enemies that used to be just fantasies. And, to fight them, they have to truly believe these monsters are real, bite and kill.

This movie seems kind of hard to categorize. It's kind of a "lighthearted" horror movie, if that makes sense. It's not really what I would call horror-comedy. It's never extremely funny, but it deals with all the horror elements in a way that doesn't seem to have the goal of actually frightening people. I would almost think it was going for a more family-friendly market if it weren't for the creature effects and blood and gore.
