Fritz is the ideal selfish, hypocritical vessel through which to satirise all aspects of 60s counterculture; he’s a poser espousing leftist values without embodying any of them, abandoning activism, free love and empathy whenever challenged. It’s hardly subtle or profound but there’s never a lull in Bakshi’s energetic cartoon, and all the sex, drug use and profanity afford it a certain charming novelty value.

Like listening to some semi-burnout reminisce about the American sixties... somewhat groovy but obviously not the same as being there.

A slightly shabby effort (when compared to its own sequel) and although it's structure feels episodic, each of these sequences are terrific, some of which prove Bakshi's place as the Godfather of (adult) animation.

Interesting, but ultimately very dull. Voice acting is impressive, animation is interesting, and even the writing has some strong points, but ultimately the plot and character development are sorely lacking in substance.

This movie's a stone cold groove, man. If you ain't hip to the vibes, you're just a square. Or something. Actually it kinda sucks. The animation is pretty cool and it's definitely interesting, but it's also grating and boring in spots, and has aged terribly.

All over the place, strung out, acidic and a little grimy but not really anything obscene, and it's hard to take a movie seriously when everyone's a hypocrite and everything's ironic. The fact that this got an X rating is kind of a joke. Still, I liked it. I liked the look of it. I liked the perversion and I liked Fritz, even if he's a blowhard dumbass. I wonder what Crumb's comics are like...

I can't tell which aspects are ironic and which aspects are sincere, but frankly any combination would still result in the same assessment. It's an interesting product of its time but ultimately very dull and stupid and somewhat abrasive.

Much better than expected. Fritz the Cat takes the wind out of the entire movement and eats its cake, too, in a whirl of pot smog and bare breasts.

It set precedent for modern adult animation, I can’t imagine how shocking it must have been for audiences at the time, but it’s not a good movie. All the social commentary goes down the drain with the amount of sex exploitation there is; definitely not a pleasant watch.

The trashiest fun you'll ever have. It's pretty obvious why Robert Crumb hates this film so much, yet it's alot of fun if you have the right mindset.

The real reason Crumb hates this movie is that he was treated shabbily by the producers. That's justification enough -- but even Crumb must realize deep down that the movie is quite faithful to the comix. It's a guilty pleasure and a classic "of a sort" -- unpleasant in parts, funny and sad in others; it has a lot of life, but not a lot of polish.

Dopey X-rated cartoon that is really only novel for it's nonstop stream of retarded hippie/revolutionary banter and pseudo intellectualism.

This movie isn't for children, not because of the sea of breasts and private parts, obscene language etc, but because I only grasped what it wanted to say in age 26. Let me sum the premise up for those of you who didn't get it: Be careful for what you wish for because you just might get it.

R. Crumb didn't think much of this movie. I guess I'm not the greatest judge, having not read many of Crumb's works (or of any comics, underground or otherwise), but I like this fine for what it is

Flawed but engaging, irreverent look at radical-hip lifestyles of the 1960s, geared for people who experienced that era. Imaginatively conceived cartoon.

Disgusting and painful to watch. Maybe I just don't get it, but I can't stand this movie. Crude, childish humor. Penises, boobs, and so much more sex than necessary.

Enjoyably dirty and trashy, a whole lot of fun overall, but it's uneven and goes off on long boring tangents. Meandering is fine, as long as doesn't bog the pacing down. Still, it's entertaining. Maybe my opinion of it will change with time, but for now this seems like an appropriate rating.

I really had a hard time getting into this movie and I did watchit all the way through, but I just didn't care for or like it very much. The animation ws alright and I wasn't offended by anything, but still, I just can't put my finger on this, but I didn't find this to my liking at all.

It's definitely crude, and often seems to be controversial just for the sake of controversy, but its heart is in the right place. It still makes for a good satire of college students, particularly in the English department, and that whole young-adult philosophy of feeling so smart and revolutionary.

A great piece of cinematic trash bought to us by Ralph B. with what I consider a great charismatic/jerk character, (if that makes any sense), Fritz The Cat with great animation and a real milestone for Adult Entertainment and Animation in general. Proving animation is not JUST for kids. You just have to go in with a mindset that you are about to see a WEIRD FILM, all these 1's and 6's probably just don't understand that this film was a Grindhouse film intended for Adults Only! A personal fav.

plays like a biting satire of the 60's with a foul mouthed, unabashedly inappropriate plot. compared to stuff coming out in the new century it's hardly offensive. watch it if you want to time travel into an acid trip weirdscape.

One of the strange products of the hippie era. It probably wouldn't work for someone without any interest and knowledge of counter-culture, because the jokes are of the 'inside' kind. The plot doesn't is weak, and there are lots of filler material when nothing is going on.

i think fritz the cat is a amazing movie and its also the first animated movie to be rated X Yes if we didnt have fritz the cat we would not have lots of the raunchy Adult cartoons today like the simpsons futurama family guy south park happy tree freinds and shows aimed at teens but were more aiming for Adults like ren and stimpy

Bakshi's debut isn't for everybody, for sure. Would probably stir up all kinds of opposition if it came out today. Notable for being the first X-rated animated feature and for bringing R. Crumb's comic insanity to life in all it's irreverence. Not a great film, but an interesting take on the times.
