A surreal, gloopy burst of lunacy. Actually quite a lot of fun, although I'd be surprised if this is what Lovecraft envisaged. Nice to see Foree popping up in an enjoyable role, and Jeffrey Combs was channeling David Tennant years ahead of his time. Why have I not seen Re-Animator yet?

An admittedly creepy splatter-gore nightmare that manages to fulfill the utterly bizarre and psychotic spirit of Lovecraftian horrors. It's got everything from carnivorous floating jellyfish to monstrous hybrids that suck brains through your eyehole. A strange, special effect filled ride through a perverse imagination. Unfortunately it's still shackled to the time-tested B-horror plot formula.

Lovecraft gore fun classic. Wild and visually ingenius. The story could be a bit better, but at least they are telling a story. Lots of memories of times when movies were still selluloid.

After a certain point, the film simply dissolves into an amorphous, slimy puddle of bile and lust and flesh. Just madness. God bless these creatives for getting together and saying, "We can do this!" and then fucking doing it. Which is coincidentally pretty much what the characters do too.

Wild interpretation of yet another H.P. Lovecraft story from Stuart Gordon. It's the kind of over-the-top that only a horror fan can love. I love it.

Entertainingly weird splattery slimefest that takes a bunch of classic Lovecraft ideas & has a whole lotta kinky fun with them but doesn't really develop itself into anything substantial. Knows exactly how seriously to take itself though (not very) & keeps everything nicely compact. Likeable b-movie cast & quite creative if notably campy presentation. Not as funny or well paced as Re-Animator but essentially carries that same charm & inventiveness. The bigger budget is both positive & negative.

It's fun to watch, goofy special effects, lots of gore, couple of tits and typical Lovecraft. And now have this huge urge to play Arkham Horror. Damnit!

I'm not sure (pineal) Lovecraft intended for there to be that much (pineal) bondage included in his story. My favorite (pineal) part had to be when the (pineal) female lead escapes from the mental hospital in her (pineal) patient's gown so she can destroy the machine, but before she (pineal) heads to the mansion, she drops by her flat to color-coordinate a spiffy red sweater with a (pineal) spiffier tweed jacket...oh, and pick up that time bomb she had in her closet (pineal). STOP SAYING PINEAL!

A gloriously loopy everything but the kitchen sink Lovecraft adaptation from Re-Animator director Gordon. Generally fine special effects, colorful direction, imaginative gore and a typically great performance from the eternally underrated Combs.

I love this movie because I thought it had reached its climax, in terms of both narrative and insane sexual imagery, and I WAS WRONG.

I found this movie to be surprisingly good. Normally I'm not a fan of the horror genre, let alone horror from the 80's. While I think it's safe to say it shares some similarities to Altered States, though not to say this copies it, I found this one to be far more enjoyable because it didn't serve as some bizarre justification to get really God damn high. The body horror in this is genuinely pretty gross, though not of the same calibre as The Thing. Still, this is a flat out good horror flick.

This is Gordon's second best film, and it's just as much wild fun as "Re-Animator". Lovecraft would be proud (well, probably not, but I think this is a great film).

A woman who challenges accepted attitudes towards mental illness (specifically misdiagnosis of schizophrenia) finds her unconventional sexual desires awakened, and consequently incurs the wrath of "rational" medical authorities, before giving herself over to another path. Sounds like BREAKING THE WAVES! A slightly more interesting story than RE-ANIMATOR, and equally exuberant, if not lurid, but perhaps a bit less fun, possibly due to being unable to rely on the effective score from PSYCHO.

Marred somewhat by the inclusion of some regrettable cg, thus putting it a notch below Re-Animator or Castle Freak in my estimation, the conventional effects (and acting really) still make From Beyond totally worth it. And this beats the shit out of Altered States, if not quite achieving Brain Damage levels of awesome. I also definitely appreciate Stuart Gordon adapting Lovecraft stories, instead of the inferior Poe that has traditionally been so much more popular with directors.

(Viewed on 08/07/15): Gordon once again reimagines Lovecraft in his own idiosyncratic way, creating an outrageous sci-fi horror with a nasty absurdist streak and a sick sense of humour. The script has problems, the S+M scene is gratuitous, and it isn't quite as cohesive as Re-Animator, but Gordon and co labor overtime to make this ridiculous tale of mad scientists, sexual perversion and interdimensional grotesquerie work. Gordon needs to return to horror ASAP. He was really onto something.

Dripping prosthetics will be the resonating imagery from this one. Wasn't as tight or well woven as Re-Animator, with some glaring plot holes and some of the sequences don't make too much sense, but I'm a sucker for body horror and exploitation of the pineal gland is pretty much a bullseye in that genre.

It pretty much picks up where the Lovecraft story left off, and while it goes in a pretty different direction and explores some different themes, it's not too bad. Fantastic monster effects.

This is so cool and fun. I want a poster of it on my wall, because I want everyone to know that I love this film. Cast is ridiculously good. Not saying the acting is good in a conventional way, but it is perfect for this type of films. Once again, I see how CGI ruined genre flicks. There's no way computer effects can top makeup that you see here. Classic.

Inferior to Re-Animator in every way, particularly less scary, but still good stuff largely on the strength of how surreal it is. We still get such mind-bogglingly stupid pseudu-medical babble as the nonchalant relating of monsters sensed via the pineal gland to schizophrenia. But if you can suspend your judgment or just laugh off the text, you will be treated to quite creative and enjoyable horror in the third/fourth act.

A less scattered brother to Evil Dead, this does have borderline camp moments thanks 2 some hokey staging & stock character-types straight from How to Make a Horror Movie for Dummies. But like Evil Dead this is one raucously entertaining film that's lean, mean & primed 4 good gore. Movies this completely devoid of excess fat r exceedingly rare & there's not a moment here that doesn't drive the narrative towards the next outrageous thrill & build 2 the appropriate nervous breakdown of a climax

I'm kind on this film because it's my kind of jam. The effects of the monster are pretty damn nifty and disturbingly inventive, and Sorel is clearly having a ball with his performance and awesomely villainous lines. The premise of this villain is also interesting, coming from an other-worldly dimension, but this intriguing set-up doesn't reach its potential -- instead the film becomes very sexy, which I won't complain about too much, though there should've been more humour for this film's tone.

I've never been too high on the whole body horror facet of the horror genre (there's exceptions of course and movies I enjoy that revolve around the subject), but this one is pretty good. Love all the neon. The bigger ideas I'm not sure I really agree with or think the movie lays out all too well, but the trashy, slimy, neon soaked aesthetic I can vibe with for sure.

A B-movie of two halves: while the humdrum filler scenes are extraordinarily tepid and uninspiring, the big special effects scenes are rather tasty and visually lush. The zany lighting, expert prosthetics and random CGI creatures are cheesy, twisted and fun. There's also the unexpected bonus of Barbara Crampton's impromptu bondage gear scene. The story is pretty bland and the characters are stupid and infuriating, so watch this for the gruesome effects and mild gore only.

Box Versátil Lovecraft no Cinema Volume 1.
