A travesty of a graphic novel adaptation. Alan Moore is spinning in his grave and he isn't even dead yet. None of the brilliance of the graphic novel was translated to the film and it proved that Johnny Depp cannot save every crappy movie that he's in.

They botched up maybe one of the greatest finales just to make characters lovable. If I had watched this when it came out, I would have been furious; but now after 10 years past reading the original comic; I just snort at it as a futile attempt to cash in by exploiting a great piece of art. I don't know why Alan Moore is so unlucky about these adaptations

Jack the Ripper flick starring Johnny Depp as the opium-addicted psychic police inspector assigned to the case. I shit you not. The premise is beyond silly and the explanation is really quite stupid (no spoilers, just trust me), but Depp is good and the movie does a nice job of evincing the filth and squalor of Victorian London. The ending is a real eye-roller.

An intense thriller that contemplates the actions of Jack the Ripper in a film that feels as though it was intended to feel as though it is being watched on a stage. While the plot is intriguing and Depp delivers as an opium addicted detective, it feels as though it offers an amount of horror that it never truly delivers.

Adapted from Alan Moore's complex, brilliant Graphic Novel of the same name, or that is what they say. The fact is, the novel and the film share nothing at all besides the name and the conspiracy theorised by Stepehn Knight long before either was created, the rights to the novel were bought simply for the title. The film however, is a somewhat gripping whodunit thriller, forget everything about the source material and enjoy it for what it is.

As someone who has read the book, i can only review it with that in mind. If you are expecting any of the substance of the book, forget it. Hard to follow, not as gory as one might like (isn't that the point if it's not intelligent?) & it has Heather, who you might think could play a whore and as it turns out cannot. I haven't seen this dame to anything worth a damn since Boogie Nights. A huge waste of a great work.

I'm certainly in the minority in loving this film, but I'm not backing down. Depp plays his role perfectly as a moody, opium-laced, sleep-deprived cop who feels (and makes you feel) like he's chasing a nightmare. That's what this film is all about--mood. You really feel like you're in rainy, smelly, dangerous Victorian London. This is not a feel-good movie and shouldn't be punished for it. It's literally an escapist film--it transports you to a world you've never been in and does it perfectly.

Overshadowed by Alan Moore's more big budget movie adaptations (Watchmen, V for Vendetta, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen), this movie tends to take a back seat. But it is a fantastic adaptation of the Jack the Ripper story gives us the look, feel and tone that puts us back to Whitechapel around the turn of the century. If you like Jack the Ripper stories, this one gives you a possible explanation that will leave you thinking long after the movie has ended.

It's a quality film with a darker atmosphere and intersting story. There's some nods to "fans" of Jack the Ripper and Depp is excellent in this. Very compelling, however the gore was a bit much for my taste. It didn't detract from the experience, per se, but I wish it would've been a bit more open ended. They do have an interesting theory on the subject, though.

A decade on from my first viewing of this questionable Jack the Ripper story and what passing interest there was appears to have dissipated. Depp and Graham both produce tolerable olde cockney accents but neither cuts an outstanding screen presence and that pretty much sums up From Hell: meh. Writing, directing and acting that's all passable enough yet never threatens to get your heart pumping. Not a terrible film by any means but is it worth two hours of your time? Not really.

The book is phenomenal, possibly beating out Watchmen as Moore's best. This adaptation is fairly terrible, stuck between bad casting (even Holm is apparently sleepwalking through serial killing) and no idea on the directors' part of how to use the material. Wasn't even disturbing enough from what I remember.

This usually gets bashed hard because Alan Moore's graphic novel was such a subversive intellectual piece of work but this honestly isn't all that bad. It's paint by the numbers when it comes to period films but it has its entertaining moments. It's pretty clear the Hughes brothers just didn't understand the source material they were working with though. Depp puts in a decent performance but nothing really special.

I really loved the dark, twisted image of before-1900s London, and I believe it makes an okay adaptation from the horrifying letters that are believed to be from the Ripper (or not). I'd probably say it's one of the most atmospheric movies I've seen - makes you happy you're not living 100 years earlier - but the plot really lacks, although the casting's fine.

Hughes brothers fail to develop much needed tension and mystery. Instead, after promising beginning, film gets confusing and uses way too much poorly placed twists and turns. I am not familiar with a source material, but it is easy to tell that bad direction ruins what could have been a good story. Depp is about the only likeable actor. I felt extremely disappointed by Graham. Charm of Rollergirl is nowhere to be seen. Technical credits are decent.

The Hughes brothers' adaptation, taking its cue, is extremely graphic, in addition to gruesome, grimy, grotesque (the Elephant Man thrown in gratuitously). But it is mostly just monotonous and dull. It features the customarily monotonous and dull Depp as the laudanum-addicted detective on the case, and Graham as a twinkly diamond among streetwalking lumps of coal. It would not be a compliment to say that they, and their British accents, stand out.

It pays pretty good attention to the facts of the real case, but the fictionalized parts seem fairly over-the-top to me. For the most part, it's a feasible plot, but the way it plays out makes it seem to me like the case should have been a lot easier to solve than it was. It gets points for pulling off some murder scenes that are gruesome without being too gory, and the ending is sort of sad, but in a satisfying way.

From Hell builds a strong atmosphere and is visually stunning, but without a strong plot or characters, it all goes for naught. It's style without substance, I suppose, and while it had all the tools to be captivating, it fails frequently because its lead character doesn't seem to do much, and because the plot is dull. Don't hope for insight in the Jack the Ripper case, either, as the film doesn't even try to be true-to-life. I can't wholeheartedly recommend From Hell.
