The graphic novel's gothic setting is strikingly realized in this film and it's the best thing the movie does. However, the plot quickly descends into a ghoulish and grisly madness that isn't really backed up with any substantive themes or character development. That leaves the film's most gory and shocking moments (which it doesn't pull punches on at all,) as feeling needlessly graphic and empty.
