A reconceptualization of the scandalous relationship between Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his great love, Countess Sophie Chotek. Typically Ophülsian in its portrayal of undying love against all obstacles, the film also weaves in a political commentary by continuing the story right up until that fateful day in Sarajevo...

The subtitles on this videocassette were hard to read, but this was still a well-made, enjoyable film - perhaps more enjoyable for the ladies - about heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the love of his life Countess Sophie Chotek, and his revolutionary, untraditional ideas about a "United States of Austria." The ending seemed like propaganda tacked on after the fact, but it was released in 1940 after all.

Directed by Max Ophüls, De Mayerling à Sarajevo [From Mayerling to Sarajevo] (1940) beauty lays in the way it's shot. Elegant as always by the German in French exile. Tells the story of Franz Ferdinand with romance taking all the attention. Perhaps too sweet considering the consequences, but I guess Ophüls wanted to focus on the positive rather then the unstoppable evil that was going on. Didn't think Ophüls got the most out of his choice of material, but he delivers another romance special.
