Is and probably always will be the most Hitchcockian of the Bonds. The elaborate, double-crossing plot of international maneuvering and intrigue is pure spy film greatness, and if you wonder what Bond as an authentic secret agent instead of an action hero would be like, here it is. The sense of style and the Barry's gorgeous music are spot-on, the girl is beautiful, Red Grant is a terrific villain and the brutal train brawl is one of the best film fights ever. (Ytadel's series ranking: #5 of 24)

Certainly one of the best Bond films. The train fight is honestly as brutal and intense as anything you'll see nowadays. You can really tell how it has since inspired go many action films since, such as the Bourne trilogy. Fantastic continuation of the James Bond series.

My favorite Bond film. Has all the "Bond" elements before they became cliche, and the freshness shows (as does Bond's misogyny, but that's another matter). Bond is more of a detective spy, neither relying on Q's techo-gadgets (he doesn't even show up in this one) or his libido-driven gentleman suaveness. A perfect mix of adventure, drama and action.

Though sometimes a little uneventful, this 007 film proves that it's not only action that makes James Bond great. From Russia With Love is one of the more charming 007 movies thanks the film's focus on the -who can you trust- side of being a secret agent. Really good!

Slightly better than Dr. No but not by much. Has a better villain and a worse Bond girl then its predecessor as well. The fight scene on the train was the highlight for me. I would've ranked this higher had it had a conclusion but it literally ends with to be continued. Which, for me, is unacceptable for a film. I mean what if Connery died from some STD that I'm sure he was getting at the time. Did anyone have a better life in the early 60's than Connery? Mad jelly

Why is this considered so good by critics? Presumably the lack of gadgetry & absence of byzantine plotting required to get Bond from country to country in the films that followed makes this feel gritty & more realistic. But except for 1 charged train fight, it also feels slow, dull & contrived (why doesn't Klebb shoot him??!) It's easy to think that all the titillation on display in the 1st hour - which must've been close to porn in 1963 - helped sear this into the young minds of critics-to-be

The quintessence of Bond. The movie is suspenseful, charming, fun, and surprisingly close to the book. The villains are all memorable, as are the ways Bond disposes of them. A very enjoyable movie that's aged very well (except for the sexism, but sexism in a Bond movie isn't a huge shock).

The goofiest of the Connery Bond films, it's easy to see why it and the spy genre in general are so widely spoofed. There are very few set-pieces so it feels like it just meanders along. There are some moments of great action or tension, like the scenes on the train, but mostly it just floats from scene to scene being wacky as hell.

James Bond Project 2017: The second of the Sean Connery Bond films is a slight improvement on the original. More like an espionage/action-thriller rather than the crime/action-drama feel of the first, the sequel built on the Bond universe, and the evil organization SPECTRE. The film feels split with one foot in the more grounded "Dr. No"(1962) and the other in the campier "Goldfinger"(1964), and if I know anything about myself I lean toward the ladder.

This seems to live better in the memory than in the actual experience of watching it. Growing up a solid 4 star favourite, but as a would-be-adult eh...time has taken its toll (on both of us). For the most part it's quite a silly film, with the only real standout sequence being the train journey, which is not as spectacular as you might remember. The rest is very fluffy, questionable stuff; very much a product of its era. Formative rather than classic action/adventure film.

A rare bond film in that it doesn't have an evil genius, gadgets or big set pieces that the series is known for. It plays much more like a Cold War thriller. Bond himself doesn't do much here, except during the climax. For the rest of the film he's simply a pawn being moved from one event to the next. A decent thriller, but a bit slow-moving at times.

A Secret Agent with a magic cock that makes previously loyal servants of the Soviet State defect nearly meets his match when he fights for his life against a pre-production prototype of Rutger Hauer.Fortunately with a combination of British pluck and ingenuity he overcomes his foe who had also helpfully told him the whole plan for no good reason - as I say, it was a pre-production prototype so perhaps there was a software glitch. Then it's just a case of defeating inept enemies in the air&at sea

It may not have the gimmickry of later Bond movies, but the the opening fake-out and the gypsy catfight still feel unnecessary. Feels like a noticeable dip between Dr. No and Goldfinger, where it's no longer serious, but not yet embraced it's sillyness.

A slight nudge towards the more campy Bond, but still mostly a grounded spy film with a bit of flair. The plot makes more sense than in Dr. No and the Bond girl here is more fleshed out and interesting. The fight scenes are enjoyable and while the explosions towards the end are a bit over the top they're fun to watch in context, unlike Dr. No where they just seemed like spectacle.

Everything is bigger in this second entry in Bond series. Luckily that also goes for the script. Connery feels even more at home in the role and Shaw makes an interesting villain. If you could forget it's Bond this would be a respectable little early cold war thriller. Only thing is, we've been spoiled by all the locations, gadgets, one-liners and OTT stunts of the later entries, and this film feels spartan by comparison. The Turkey-set scenes are interesting but after that, too much of the film takes place on a train - and the girl turns from a character into an annoying prop. Some good elements but this is Bond still forming himself in the dregs of the primordial soup.

It has the class of a James Bond film alright - the charming Sean Connery, the gadgetry, the coolness, the womanizing. The plot is also interesting - but not watertight - and the action scenes are good enough. Unfortunately there isn't many of them and I felt that Bond wasn't threatened or challenged for real for the biggest part of the movie. His opponents were almost always obviously inferior and the man that was introduced as his nemesis in the beginning doesn't do much until the very end.

Excellent Bond entry, only bested by DR NO, though both can stand apart as fine British spy thrillers in their own right. More low-key and intense than all the Bonds that followed, it benefits from a terrific supporting cast (sinister Lenya, smouldering Shaw, boistrous & charming Armendariz). If Bianchi is a less impressive Bond girl, Connery's Bond treats her with frank contempt, resulting in a few wincing scenes for the PC brigade. Highlighted by Bond and Grant's famed train fight sequence.

A classic James Bond film that introduces the archetypes that we know and love today. Double agents, deception, and the first hint of tricky gadgets to come. I should note that this was at least my fifth viewing of this film, so fatigue may have set in a bit. FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE is considered by some the pinnacle of the series, and while I differ--the plot is a bit thin, the first half a bit slow, and Daniela Bianchi underwhelming in a weakly-written role--it does have Connery in fine form, a glorious supporting cast (Armendariz, Lenya, Shaw, etc.), lush Istanbul scenery, a thrilling final third, and a top notch score. All in all, it's a must-see.

From Russia with Love convincingly builds on the success of it's predecessor and is in my opinion one of the best Bond films. Sean Connery is perfect once as 007 and Robert Shaw & Lotte Lenya are both unforgettable Bond villains. And former miss world model Daniela Bianchi is a classic Bond girl. This sequel respects Ian Fleming's novels and the characters he created. The set pieces are bigger & better and the train fight in particular is possibly my favourite Bond moment of the entire series.

You know how the easy answer to the "best Bond" question is Sean Connery? This film is why. The suaveness, the physicality, the chest hair--all that noise is played at a reasonable volume here. Granted, I kind of prefer the "Bond commits a terrorist act, and then he goes to the bar to self-medicate" version of Connery Bond from Goldfinger, but the guy in From Russia with Love is addicting to watch.

Certainly not the best Bond movie, but far from the worst. Connery yet again puts up a fantastic performance, fighting against the awesome anti-agency SPECTRE. I think perhaps if the villains were a little stronger and the story a little tighter around the more interesting aspects, this could have been on par with Goldfinger. Yet this is still a pretty good Bond flick.

Much-improved follow-up to Dr. No, with Bond really starting to hit his stride. What it lacks in some of the series' trademark goofiness and over-the-top action, it makes up for in memorable characters, tight plotting, and consistent tension (particularly during the train scenes). While it may be a bit slow for modern audiences, I enjoy how it takes its time.

Yes yes, it's problematic and horribly un-PC. It's also damn boring. The pacing is just awful; every scene takes forever with very little pay-off. The plot feels needlessly convoluted and I never got around to actually caring about it. Mostly it lacks humour; it's a ridiculous over-the-top fantasy, but except for a few droll remarks from Bond this is never acknowledged.

Bond's second outing offers only a little suspense and far too few thrills, and its lack of a climactic set-piece is a real disappointment. Along with this, the antagonists' combined failure to simply shoot the hero while holding him at gunpoint is frustratingly silly. Connery is terrific as 007, and while Shaw impresses as the menacing killer on his tail, Lenya is altogether underwhelming.

If you take away the camp from Bond, you have to be careful that there was anything else to look at other than the rug in the first place. From Russia with Love removes the charm and exotic Caribbean/science fiction wonder from Dr. No, and in its place remain simplistic characters and a dull plot lacking any clever complexity or empathetic suspense. The final train scenes are great but I can think of no reason to recommend this otherwise pedestrian spy movie. An honorable mention for Armendáriz

Rewatch. Solid second entry with haunting title song. Not as much spycraft as Dr. No. The villains meetings seem campy but so did the MI6 scenes. Robert Shaw had a better operative presence than Bond. Fav scenes: Daniela Bianchi in his bed with nothing other than a lace ribbon on, complaining about the size of her mouth; Shaw/Connery fight on the train felt leagues ahead of other movie fights of the era.

From Russia with Love is slow movie, careful, sinister and a great second outing for 007. Sean Connery take ownership of the franchise very early on and prove he is without a doubt the definitive Bond. From Russia with Love is on par with Dr. No. While the production value is noticeably higher, the action sequences still looks dated in places. The plot has a distinctly different feel that is slower, more deliberate & a game of cat-and-mouse with lower stakes. Bond isn't totally out of his depths (Craig-era) but the villain is constantly a few steps ahead. The quips, location hopping & simplicity make it a good watch. Austin Powers seems to have borrowed many an element from this entry.
