Brilliant from start to finish. Some say that only the boot camp section is great but I disagree entirely. The movie certainly does shift at that point suddenly but it perfectly shows the change between boot camp and war. Outstanding film.

A personal favorite, Full Metal Jacket consists of a spectacular first half that transitions into almost a completely different, yet equally gripping film. Ermey's performance is absolutely stellar, and Kubrick's directing really shines. Dehumanization at its best, er... worst.

The first part of the film is absolutely BRILLIANT... the story, the acting, the directing is amazing. However the movie lost me at the second part. It got a lot weaker as it progressed. The directing is still amazing, but the story isn't that interesting. But the first half more than makes up for the second.

Equates sex and death - those two favorite concerns of the adolescent male - like few films I've seen outside of Cronenberg's ouevre. And yet the Marines' testosterone-fueled rage is ultimately rendered hollow in the face of wartime horrors, as their transformation from empathetic human beings into remorseless killing machines is completed. Like so many other Kubrick films, unjustly chastized - but unlike most, its critical reevaluation is yet to come.

Full Metal Jacket is great. The first half of this film is absolutely amazing. R. Lee Ermey was fantastic as drill Sgt. Hartman. But eventually, the movie starts to take a turn for the worse, but thats not a bad thing at all. Kubrick still shines in his direction, but its as if a completely new movie came into the picture. Full Metal Jacket perfectly executes how brutal war is, even before your sent off to battle. This film is packed with extremely memorable scenes, most being with Ermey. Great.

Like most people, I consider the first part to be the best. The dehumanizing rigors of drilling, the transformation of Pyle, and all those colorful lines that explode out of Ermey's mouth. By contrast, the dialogue in the rest of the movie is horribly clichéd and poorly delivered. The middle section is an unfocused hodge-podge of "Vietnam stuff". Some of it is interesting, but for the most part it seems to belong to a lesser film. Only at the sniper episode does the film regain its legs.

Pretty awesome movie. A war movie directed by Stanley Kubrick. I cannot really complain! The story was really good but the little bit about Private Pyle and that boot camp was the more interesting part of the film. Still, the characters are all good and well-acted and the directing and music score are all great. If you haven't seen this yet you need to.

"Full Metal Jacket" is Stanley Kubrick's best film and the best war movie ever made. The first part is funnier than "Dr. Strangelove", while the second is more shocking than fifty hours of "Saving Private Ryan". Amazing soundtrack, terrific direction and fantastic performances, particularly from Ermey and D'Onofrio add up to a mind-blowing result, a film that can have you laugh with your heart and pick up your jaw from the floor at the same time.

On my most recent re-watch I noticed two new things. First, I noticed some compassion coming from Drill Sergeant Hartman. Previously I had just seen him as breaking balls, but now I see that he was really trying to help Pyle, and was actually proud that he finally made a soldier out of him. Second, I noticed the symbolic regression of Pyle into childhood. Sucking his thumb, crying in bed, needing help lacing his shoes, needing help getting dressed. Food for thought.

Normally it would be alarming that the boot camp half feels heavier than the war half, but Lee Ermey really was that guy. Military cadences have never been more obnoxious. Its interesting how Joker internalizes the suicide and never speaks of it during the entire second act. I think it's a bit too on the nose that the peace sign/born to kill helmet gets called out and explained, but I know folks who think the movie is just about how badass the marines are so go figure. The duality of moviegoers.

Feels like two movies. The first half is about boot camp for a squadron of Marines and has some pretty intense and gritty moments. It also holds what is considered the gold standard for drill sergeant roles by R. Lee Ermey. The second half follows the character Joker during the Vietnam War. While it has some great parts as well it never seems to match the energy the first half brought, which is a shame.

R. Lee Ermey makes the first half of the movie the most intense, funny, scary, entertaining extended war training montage in cinematic history, and I love it. The latter half is a big step down, but still a good war movie. The problem is that Kubrick's cold, perfectionist style fails to really capture the intensity of war, but on the other hand - Adam Baldwin!

Interesting how this movie had two halves. I liked the first half more, with Gomer Pyle(sp?). The way that half ended caught me off guard and really made the rest of the film tough to match. Modine's character had some good lines in the 2nd part as he struggled to figure out what was the right side to be on. Scenes like Christmas day tried to show me how different life is in boot camp or at war. Also finally found out where 2 Live Crew took that hook from.

Its politics are less pointed than in Kubrick's previous anti-war efforts, and instead Full Metal Jacket exists in philosophical spheres: a Venn diagram of the man and the machine, the self and the shadow, and indeed the first half and the second, between which there is no large gap of quality, and each of which would cease to meaningfully function without the other. It is interesting to watch, then, how Kubrick shoots this psychological miasma with aesthetic clarity and precision.

Kubrick's talents knew no limits! Full Metal Jacket is about as good a war film as ever made. A film of two seperate halves, with each half in its own way as brutal and as savage as the other, as Kubrick gives us a shocking account of the horrors of war. The script is one of the finest in movie history, the performances are top notch and as always Kubrick's work behind the camera near flawless.

The first half, the training, is often viewed as the best part because it has more memorable characters and a better story, but it'd be nothing if there weren't a second part to put that training in context of a brutal confusing war.

Full Metal Jacket is a film of two excellent halves, iconic scenes and great performances. Personally I think the first half is by far the most intelligently developed and hard-hitting, although Kubrick does an equally great job at directing the second half it just somehow feels a little shallow and empty at points. However what the movie does sport is a catalogue of memorable quotes, fantastic characters and the portrayal of the equally brutal mental battles raging within the training grounds.

I don't quite follow the first/second half debate. The themes are clear throughout, and the opening act serves to reinforce what we see later. [SPOILERS] They're halves of a whole- all that drilling and exercise and punishment just so they can fumble around in a pile of rocks getting killed by a little girl? If you were bored because there were fewer dick jokes and n-words in the second half then you missed the disgusting, despairing satire of the thing.

A brilliant war movie. The score and soundtrack was amazing, the use of humourus songs against the backdrop of the destructive and horrifying scenes was a masterstroke. A tense, funny, frightening second half is almost a complete contrast to the first half. The dialogue is the first half is better than most comedies these days. Some amazing scenery in the second half. I can't give this a higher score because I think it lacks any real emotional punch, which would have lifted it to near perfect.

The boot camp first half dragged on too long, but ended with a bang. The middle goes nowhere. The last half has some war action and picks up considerably. Most of the acting felt genuine, and there was some mildly gritty material. I was left wondering what the point was. If they are saying war is hell, then they missed a lot of opportunities to say that better. Good music. Technically it is very well made, but the story feels incomplete and unfinished.

Although the first half tends to be the most memorable, FMJ sits through as an intense, funny, and dark depiction of war. The dehumanization of these recruits is far from cheesy, and becomes powerful when it needs to be. Kubrick is a master at showcasing his brilliance and uses a very stylistic score. Wouldn't mind revisiting this down the road at all.

boot camp is brilliant, but the actual vietnam scenes inevitably feel like a poor man's Apocalypse Now, which completely dominates this film in its depiction of the psychological breakdown within the jungle. the criticism of the second half is justified; much of the so-called "intense" scenes just seemed to drag on, and i didn't much care for joker as a protagonist.

Not as cohesive as the rest of Kubrick's oeuvre and definitely his weakest film. It's not a terrible film by any means, but it's overshadowed by superior war films of the era. It has the usual Kubrickian charm that makes it worthwhile to watch and Private Joker gives the bifurcated structure more stability than it would have otherwise.

Considered in my opinion one of the best war films ever. I love the 2 parts of the film showing Basic training and the war in Vietnam. The characters develop very well for seeing the majority of the cast that made it into Vietnam part. Joker is the most developing and I love the sergeant. Very well written, cinematography and overall just a great action film with one of the best storylines and elements. Great film, a masterpiece, and personally Kubrick's best.

The first forty-five minutes of Kubrick's penultimate film are simply terrific. But as the middle act commences, everything just seems to be falling apart. The film itself is only saved by the very suspenseful final scenes. Overall, it is a well-directed if uneven effort that can both make you laugh and cringe, that is quite promising at first but won't pay off until the end and that set the template for pretty much every war film that followed.

However the sarcastic dialogues and soliloquys are at times truly brillliant and the last few minutes sent shivers down my spine. The first part of the movie (boot camp scenes) is an incredible and accurate view on the dehumanization of young people. Sadly, Matthew Modine can't really carry the second half of the movie, like Vincent D'Onofrio does to the first. Animal Mother, is, ironically, the most likable character on the second part.

Like all later Kubrick films, it's a one of a kind experience every bit as powerfully filmed as it is intellectually challenging. The first act produces some of the most interesting moments in any movie and I thought the rest of the film, though not as initially striking (yet what can be) was extremely well thought out.

I would argue that this is the most relevant film, from a sociological standpoint, that Kubrick has made. It very effectively showed the mental effects of war on soldiers in such a way that puts it on-par with (or above) movies like 'Platoon'. 'Jacket' is endlessly quotable, topped with classic Kubrick icing. Whether through an academic or purely-pleasurable lens, 'Jacket' delivers a unique, moving viewing experience. It is nothing short of required viewing for any movie fan.

The drill instructor played by R. Lee Ermey never fails to amuse, and this is important because the first half of the film relies solely on his dialog to stay afloat. I would've preferred a little more substance. The second half fails to do anything real amazing at all, but is still a passable war story. Overall I feel that this film is overrated but it is still a respectable Kubrick film that fans of war movies will enjoy.

this anti-war gem is somehow different from every other there is. by the time it actually depicts the terror of war itself, it's almost over. and yet it holds its own as a gripping tale of how people need to abandon many aspects of their humanity to the experience of kill or be killed. it never overstates, there are no prosaic martyrs, just messed up people trying to get through somehow. it's exactly how i imagine war and its preambles from a soldiers point of view.

Full Metal Jacket is another excellent film by Stanley Kubrick. Kubrick can create such an atmosphere in his movies that you forget what is right and what is wrong. The first half was amazing with some memorable scenes, but in the next half the story shifts towards the humanitarian aspect and how brutal war really is.

Stanley Kubrick has a reputation for painstaking meticulousness, so I was quite surprised to spot several technical fumbles in the movie--and I'm not even observant when it comes to these things. Although the subject matter is affecting, it's conveyed in a flat, one-note manner. The crazy acting by Vincent D'Onofrio is unconvincing. R. Lee Erney's lines are good but too often other actors' dialogue plays as stilted. Full Metal Jacket is good but unquestionably could have been better executed.
