Funny Bones

As a comedy nerd I should have loved Funny Bones, but I just didn't connect with it. The problem is there are three elements to this movie and none of them work. The Family Drama and Crime elements are both underdeveloped, and the Comedy elements are not funny enough to stand on their own. Don't get me wrong there are occasionally some moments of really great cinematography, and I liked the cast well enough. It's just Chelsom's direction and screenplay are severely lacking focus and cohesion.

Funny Bones is an odd film. Either Chelsom couldn't decide whether he wanted to make a crime thriller with funny moments or a comedy-drama with a crime backdrop, or he wasn't able to blend the genres (and plots) well enough to create a cohesive film. Evans provides some entertaining moments, but the film is overwhelmed by an unrelenting tone of melancholy and bleakness (helped by being set in Blackpool). This compliments the thematic nostalgia well, but frustrates the comedic elements.

Top badass moment? A perfect example of why British and American humour (from any era) should never be allowed to mix. (This should be obvious from the fact that we can’t even spell the word in the same way.) In its defence this is quite a unique film, but then again so were Magneto, Thanos and the Advanced Passenger Train, and they didn’t turn out so well. And as for the stupid wax eggs... And also, dancing in biscuit tins for shoes IS. NOT. FUNNY. 1 cat, no chainsaws or decapitations.

The film is messy as it juggles various plot threads. The larger problem is one that plagues any movie about fictional creative types: you have to sell their alleged genius. We have the in-movie audience laughing uproariously as if it was the greatest, funniest thing they'd ever seen in their lives. When to me, it was just some lame hacky vaudeville bullshit. Put less emphasis on how hilarious these guys are supposed to be, and kill the smuggling subplot, then I'd be on board. As it is... meh.
