The casual racism of the 1970s working mens club was shocking to hear with modern ears; It felt highly authentic. Reminiscent of the T.V. series: Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit (1990) in the allegorical portrayals of childhood, teen, adult.

Admirably serious-minded and dark spirited portrait of a comedienne - captures the seedy and ugly tone of provincial 'men's clubs' with a disconcerting accuracy; in its pursuit of its view of the scene, it's a shame that the screenplay lacks any sort of focus or insight into its motley array of characters, though excellent performances all round compensate; Peake is wonderful as the unvarnished lead and Armstrong (great as always) steals every scene he is in.

Strong drama with a convincing central performance from Maxine Peake, very evocative of a time and place.

Objectively better than the film marketed about a funny literal cow
