There's nothing particularly new under the sun in David Ayer's well-made WW2-flick, but it's fittingly vile to witness Brad Pitt and his tank crew turn German soldiers into sauerkraut - and that long dinner scene half-way through was tense as hell!

Ayer's obsessions with gangs, brotherly bonding and masculine seduction are at the fore. All of Pitt's acting comes from the scar on his face, but he does a good job strutting around like a warlord. Less a story about how War Is Hell and more about how war is something men do to boys. More Training Day than End Of Watch.

Consequently, the film's graphic depictions of human anguish and misery feel perfunctory rather than the result of narrative causality. And you know, your forthright quest for hard boiled realism proves questionable if you're going to pussy out at the very end.

Phenomenal. Awesome story, artfully shown. Heartbreaking to watch and yet inspirational. Characters show where the ideals of life and faith meet the ultimate reality of violence that determines history. Only criticism may be the music and some of the fade overlays over-emote in a few parts. LaBeouf truly redeems himself as Boyd "Bible" Swan, a man of faith that must put his trust in God's hand over the fate of the war. Dives into that messiness with respect. Loved this.

It's trying so hard to be something it's not. The whole humanity thing is leading nowhere. Some parts though feel like it could become something decent but then other parts feel like an Uwe Boll film. And the last act is just absurd.

This is a movie that does what it sets out to do early on and then rubs your face in it the rest of the film. We get it, WWII was hellish. While the acting and cinematography were good (especially Pitt, but that was to be expected), the screenplay felt directionless. Mainly though, the movie was too long. Would have been much more palatable if it was shorter.

The ending is hokey and Hollywood as shit, despite the wonderful last shot that lingers on (in a good way), but the rest of the movie is solidly made. Cinematography, photography, the score, the editing, the acting... all on point. It tells a more personal tale and doesn't get caught up in American Jingoism, which is refreshing. Part character study, part action movie, succeeds at both.

With the WWII-film horse kicked to death (I can still hear its screams), Fury heads towards covering the toll on the human psyche..explored in vastly greater depth by Malick, Spielberg, Kubrick, the Grey Zone & Come and See. Doesn't hold back on the war-gore which is commendable, but comes across too over-scored & formulaic to really hit home. The finale was an Allied mirror of the Nazi film shown during the theatre sequence in Inglorious Basterds. Pitt, on screen instead of in the audience

Stunning photography, a moody score, a booming sound mix and intriguing editing beats make for a nice modern take on the traditional men on a mission war film. Solid acting all around, from Pitt to a subdued LaBeouf, but it is Logan Lerman who has the spotlight, with an emotional breakthrough performance. While the set-pieces are remarkable, the standout moment is an extended dramatic scene that digs into the characters and the cost of war.

The subversion of the war hero indoctrination seems to be what Fury strives to, and I say tries because of failure to uphold it over blasé narrative and plot points. I can't help but see Ayer's God Eye perspective showing a divine sanction of the bloodshed, rather than a demythification of the heavily loaded Good War imagery and culture.

A raw and unsentimental war movie without bullshit. Even though we don't know the crews childhood background we feel both repulsion, sympathy and understanding for the 5 main characters. It's not propaganda or patriotic when all the killing, badmouthing and so on aren't objectively justified in the movie. We simply see the war from the view of a single American tanks crew. That's it! Not a deep movie and It has its flaws, but basically fulfills its goal.

Ayer establishes a grim and overbearing atmosphere early that never really lets up; it's standard "war is hell" stuff but it feels like we're in the middle of an apocalypse and it works really well. The technical craft is top notch as well, and the cast is good. Narratively and structurally, however, it never commits to being something different from just another bloody war film. There are compelling moments but we never stray far enough from the tropes of the genre. Solid but unambitious.

An incredibly realistic, dark & gritty account of a tank command near the end of WWII. Excellent performances. Brad Pitt was amazing. The story is brutal, raw & engaging without resorting to overly gory graphic depictions. Riveting action details the harrowing experiences of warfare. Excellent production quality & music. Fury uses it's fine direction and acting to show a pretty good depiction of World War II. Good sound effects and editing all the way through, in my opinion. I can't say it lives up to the hype, but it's at least good. The cast works together quite well and Lerman is slowly becoming a top young adult actor. Shia LaBeouf pulled this role off very well actually and I even liked the diner scene. Breaks the mood but for a good reason. It's not my favorite wat movie, but it's still good.

Spielberg could have made this: It's technically well executed, but the script plays everything safe and dumbly clings to convention. In one particularly contrived scene, a beautiful German virgin readily gives herself to the protagonist (i.e. a conquering enemy soldier) just because it would have been against-type for him to rape her. The macho bullshit actually keeps getting worse from there.

A very true and gritty portrayal of a dirty war. Tonally, this movie hit the right pitch, making it a different breed of war film from Apocalypse Now or Platoon. Its acted well for the most part. LaBouef does some good for once and Lerman actually stands out over Pitt. The real problems, though not huge, lie with the writing. It was slow in parts and could be a little choppy, but that truly didn't stop the film from being a good war film. I came out satisfied.

It strongly pulls off the gritty, all-encompassing atmosphere that it was going for, and from a performance standpoint, I don't think Brad Pitt has ever been better, to say nothing of the oft-criticized LaBeouf who, say what you will about him, can bring it in the right role. Calling these characters "heroes" is a misnomer (note: I feel the film addresses this), but that's not a criticism. Even if the "realism" doesn't hit perfectly for you, you can definitely enjoy "Fury" as-is.

My opening line could be the same as Rufflesack's but with entirely different interpretations. Brad Pitt looks more like Robert Redford with every movie. I'm beginning to tire of the David Ayer It All Took Place During One Day theme of his films. I was just exhausted with this. Shia LaBeouf is to acting what Kanye West is to rap. Incredibly solid war movie. Great cast and central characters. I really liked some of the unorthodox visuals, such as the color coded muzzle flashes. I honestly found it to be a very engaging human drama, offering food for thought about morality in fundamentally immoral situations. Just as brutal as it needs to be without going too far. One of the best cinema experiences of 2014 for me - not that that's saying particularly a lot thus far.

it seems like whoever wrote this had a nice little saturday evening with some hard liquor and "saving private ryan", trying to come up with a way to one-up every aspect of said movie afterwards. the result is that there's no emotion in here that doesn't feel forced on you somehow. the constant shifts in tone and characters don't help either. there's some moments when you think it's going somewhere, but where it's all ultimately headed is just a less than mediocre ending.

Lerman's character transformation comes off as unnatural, Pitt basically repeats Aldo in dead seriousness and for a film that seems to mourn how war turns people into animals, it's the badassery rather than the awfulness that's emphasized (the final shoot-'em-up, preceded by dramatic Bible quotations was one to puke for). Now go watch "Lebanon".

I'm pretty sure I've seen this one more than a few times: fish out of water new recruit assigned to battle hardened and bloodied veteran tank crew grows to become part of the team. The action is good, sequences of tank rounds skipping off the ground and bouncing off enemy armour is pretty awe inspiring and as frightening as tracer rounds cutting through bodies. It's brutal. I'll agree with what most have said here, the first two thirds was good, the last third was just silly Hollywood meh.

It's a brutal film that doesn't sugarcoat war,shows it in all it's horror(from dead mangled remains of the combatants to the toll on civilians). The one major gripe I have with the film is the ending, too Hollywood for a film that made clear that in war,death can come at anytime, the ending battle kinda ruins that thread that was there throughout. That said: definitively recommend it

That said, it's also a film that reminds of that "it's not possible to make an anti-war film" quote because try as it might to make war gory and depressing and futile it can't help but delight in overwhelming violence and good guys vs bad guys dynamics. It's a conflicted film that doesn't really do enough with that conflict to stand out.

One last gripe I have with this film is the tiring biblical references, which had to be injected into almost every scene (give me a break). Decent film for tank or WWII buffs to check out.

Well made and fittingly tense throughout. Like many war films, it does a great job at examining how duty and morality clash in times of war. It does have some flaws, including an over-imposing score. It also begins to explore some themes, but doesn't get past the surface. For instance, the interplay between faith and war is touched upon, but it seems like there was more there to examine.

Fury doesn't spare its audience and takes no prisoners. That much is clear. I like how Ayer doesn't choose a particular side and shows war for what it is: hell on earth. Extreme realism is what this film is about, to capture what very well may have happened. The acting is strong, the cast delivers and more. The sound design is top notch and wouldn't be surprised if it would receive the Oscar this year. All in all a very good war film, go and see it. You will be 'blown' away.

While displaying elements of a war film, this isn't really one and that's okay. Fury feels more like a over-polished action adventure, than gritty and dark depiction of war. The cast is more so the highlight of this, and you do genuinely feel a sense of camaraderie between them. They aren't the greatest written characters you'll see, but when they're together, it's a nice touch to a film that is a bit different than the latest world war movies we've gotten as of late.

The best way to describe Fury is by comparing it to Wolfgang Peterson's Das Boot just with a tank instead of a submarine. However if it wasn't for that last battle sequence. It is seriously, one of the silliest, most unrealistic scenes in any war movie. For me it really spoilt what could have been a near perfect good movie.

David Ayer's drama about a tank crew in the last days of WWII does one thing better than any war film I can think of: it shows how the human body is mutilated, even desecrated, by combat, reducing mankind to scraps of meat and bone. Otherwise, it's a technically accomplished and solidly-acted outing without a certain fundamental point. Ayer's script doesn't provide quite enough psychological depth or unique insight, but his direction, particularly in the climactic battle, is most forceful.

Good in parts. Nice to see a real Sherman and Tiger used and attempts at accuracy with sets and uniforms. Too gruesome for my tastes but some very good acting. The last portion was quite unbelievable. The sound of the boots of the marching Waffen SS didn't fit with the mud underfoot. Why would they bother to assault the front of a disabled Sherman where most of the machines guns are located? Why not just go around it and move on. It would have benefited from some decent military advisers.

The monotone, devilish-sounding German chants on Steven Price's brilliant score cue you in to what kind of experience this is going to be - namely one where hell is constantly on the verge of erupting. Shot on sumptuous 35mm, it even looks like grand opera. One of the best of 2014, underrated because it's at heart and in structure an adventure film.

I thought this was pretty solid. I liked the sort of 'slice of life' style the film had, rather than the more traditional story structure in a war film like this. It doesn't cover much new territory in the genre, but it does put a bit more emphasis on character, which I appreciated. The cast make a pretty good ensemble. It's shot well, the cinematography is nice, and I enjoyed the action sequences as well as the slower, quieter scenes.

I feel like there's a lot of missed potential here. Out of the gates the film is fantastic, with an opening tracking shot of foggy and desolate terrain drenched in stark, haunting blue, disturbed at once by a slowly lumbering horseman. When the tank battles ensue, the familiar, ever-boring Score for Action Scene kicks up the feel with its high-octane percussion, and the experience morphs from brutal and uncomfortable introspection into practical, standard entertainment. It should be better.

Solid movie. The little moments and commraderie of the troop is really solid. The young kid/main character isn't well developed enough to care about. The really emotional moments are over the top and don't really work. The last 15 minutes take the movie down a full 5-10 points probably.

5 flat American characters packed in a tank, so you already know that every dialogue will be charged with unnecessary theatrics. Apart from that: musics are on point, photography is wonderful and acting is acceptable. Passes the time well

Well cast, technically well crafted war film hampered by an overly familiar tone and approach, albeit more reminiscent of 40s and 50s efforts than anything in the post-RYAN era. Feels like a “rough edit” with some scenes dragging on beyond all reason, and exposing the contrived and predictable plotting (and set-ups visible from miles away) to turn it into a coming-of-age story for Lerman. Reliably solid work from Pitt, and a nice sense of the growing team camaraderie, help maintain interest.

Polished, gruesome and interesting war film. Quite exciting to see the group of protagonists move out into unknown territory. - Shia LaBeouf is great, the tank battles are nice and (!) the german dialogue is on point. That is enough to forgive the confusing ending.

As far as war movies go, it's the most entertaining one to come out recently, though apart from its tank perspective, it doesn't add much new to the genre. Would've been a lot better without the young Norman, whose character arc is embarrassingly flimsy, yet unfortunately he is always there to lead this film into some uninteresting moments. But like I said, it's particularly bombastic (especially in the second half) and features some very well made action scenes.

This film covers it's bases by putting in the required action scenes and setpieces, which are decent enough, but it feels hollow. None of the characters are very likeable, or particularly well acted either. Brad Pitt's character stands out as the clichéd superman type (with one brief exception), always knowing what to do and totally fearless in the face of a hailstorm of bullets. If you're just looking for some WW2 action, it's an acceptable film, but I want something more.

For something that I feel is supposed to feel like an intimate story in a larger setting, there is too much time spent on the action and too little on character development, group development. Normans change to the war and the group subsequently feels rushed and unbelievable - its like one moment he's this naive, reluctant kid and one engagement later a killing machine out for nazi blood. It's certainly a well made film, but one that misses it's mark mostly because of the aforementioned.

Overall I really liked this movie. Not too dry or documentary-like; you can feel the cinematic vibes there, so I'd say it's fit for a wide variety of audiences. A tad too pro-American at times, but still...what would you expect. Could've been worse so I'm happy. Watched it recently for the second time. Excellent acting by Pitt and LaBeouf (and Bernthal). [Minor Spoiler Alert:] The last scene with the SS solder did not make any sense.

I really liked this movie. Brad Pitt was great, and Logan Lerman was pretty good. I really didn't find to much to complain about this movie. I really liked it mostly because, It portrays a great description of World War 2. I was actually surprised that Shia LeBeouf puled it off. Logan Lerman is becoming a great actor. This is probably my favorite Logan Lerman movie so far. Although, i have not seen The Perks of Being a Wallflower yet,so.

Tanks for the memories David Ayer. This film was really good, and I'm not a fan of war movies. It's not that I'm for or against it, I just don't like the genre. This movie did a great job of showing how brutal war is, you actually see a side of someones face that got scraped off inside then tank. The deaths in the movie are BRUTAL. This movie also had Shia LaBeouf be semi-likable which is a tough accomplishment...

A competent war movie, but in a post '98 world, you've got to have something extremely special to make a splash among other WWII movies. I was pretty satisfied with the cast and the action was awesome. I'm a little tired of war movies humanizing the participants, show me a hard man with no mercy left, little empathy for his enemy. This has a few of those. I never get sick of seeing big budget movies taking place in the 40's, and this one is downright solid, maybe just a touch above.

Liked it a lot. Hadn't seen any tank fighting before and the best part was the dehumanization of humanity or barbaraziation of character, in war time. The acting was measured, emotions were commensurate with the action. Yes, there were few cliches, but after seeing so many war movies, I can forgive few cliches. While this certaintly is not one of the best war movies, it does a fair bit on character building of the protagonists and the inhuman toll on them that a war takes.

I was really impressed with this one. I wasn't expecting a whole lot, I got treated to a lot of heavy emotions and a bleak look at total warfare. Seeing what life would be like inside a tank, cramped spaces and all is very interesting. I kept being reminded of 'Das Boot' while watching this. its not quite as claustrophobic feeling as that movie is, however, it still manages to clue you in to the lifestyle they had. Its a very engaging movie, from beginning to end I was drawn in.

A sorta poor man's Saving Private Ryan. Even the young inexperienced soldier trope and the band of tough guy heroes who sacrifice themselves at the end. But Pitt is no Tom Hanks, and Ayer is no Spielberg, making this just another slice of "War-is-hell" cheese.

Fury was one of the films of 2014 I was initially most skeptical to see. After the superb 'Inglorious Basterds', I just wasn't convinced that Brad Pitt had another great war film in him. Here he adds the start quality that this film needed to be noticed. There's no doubting that David Ayer's all round direction is impressive. And the battle sequences are well edited and much more exiting than I expected. The climax is certainly intense, but as a whole Fury amounts to style over substance.

For the most part a well acted, gritty yet understated war movie that provides a sometimes shocking glimpse of life for WW2 American tank crews. Sadly the film is undermined and nearly ruined by its finale - an absurdly long and over-the-top action sequence. Technically accurate for the most part, Ayer really should have Googled Panzerfaust, a disposible anti-tank weapon carried by nearly every German soldier in 1945, as its conspicuous absence from the closing act renders it downight silly...

Put this in black and white and shear out all the "fucks," and it's indistinguishable from all those old grind-em-out WWII flicks your dad used to sit around and watch on Saturday afternoons. So, your dad will probably like this more than you, is what I'm saying. It is what they call an Old-Fashioned War Movie. I am not too into Old-Fashioned War Movies. If you are, have at it.
