Future World

The filmmakers have neither the budget nor the skill to transform the terrible script into anything worth watching. The only saving grace - and I can't believe I'm writing this - is Milla Jovovich's manic performance as Drug Lord.

The cinematographer should be commended for making this watchable, because without the admirably creative photography, the empty script, hammy performances, and repetitive drone of dirtbikes would have driven me completely away. With it, however, the whole film has a sort of organic, earnest quality that allows this to be a pretty decent B-movie.

Future World commits the unforgivable sin of being a boring B-movie. These types of films don't need to do a lot right—as long as they're entertaining in some form or fashion, it's hard to be too disappointed. This one's a slog. It's a post-apocalyptic hero's journey where the setting is dull and uninspired, the hero is even blander, the supporting cast consists of stereotypes you've seen done better elsewhere, and the whole project lacks drive, creativity, purpose, plot, and fun

Even sub-par sci-fi movies, with all of their budgetary limitations and crappy special effects and wooden acting have standards. This movie is a spectacular example that even the worst movie you can see on the big screen and walk out claiming it's the worst of the year is several orders of magnitude better than some of the stuff that never made it there in the first place. How, on this planet, did such an awe inspiring failure get made with so many heavy hitters? Nothing makes sense anymore.

James Franco wanted to make a sci-fi movie and likes the idea of an android falling in love with a human. Then he went somewhere into the desert and made this movie. He apparently also went insane, judging by his performance. Snoop Dogg plays his apocalyptic self. Milla Jovovich has the time of her life and is getting paid for it. Be like Milla and accept its bullshit and have fun with it. I know I had.
