Ben Foster has really sidled his way into a position as a must-see performer. The acting at large is utterly captivating, striking a beautiful balance for its principal characters between self-contempt and wanting a better life. Cinematically the film is adequate but doesn't bust any doors down. A very solid neo-noir all told.

Not as engaging as I hoped it to be. Missed chance.

Considering the buzz around some of the actors involved its a bit weird that I had heard absolutely nothing about this film. After watching it I can sort of see why. Its a rather flimsy film, banking on its actors to elevate some stale and uninspired writing. They do good for the most part, but the film constantly feels a step late, and a buck short. A missed opportunity with some glimpses of greatness.

Was really excited to see what Ben Foster would do. I guess he did fine but overall it's just another a sub par indie flick.

At times it was exciting but also frustratingly incomplete. The filmography was frequently unsatisfying. The story progression was chaotic and marked by confusing. Despite its flaws, it was interesting and engaging, but a bit like watching a train wreck in slow motion. Elle Fanning was a treat, but a little too beautiful to be entirely convincing in the role. The ending was a somewhat empty reward.

Thanks to Ben Foster and Elle Fanning the film succeeds at not only telling us a story of Roy's wish for redemption but the unrelenting torture he is put through to get it. At times this film slows down a crawl but it allows for moments of development to be performed with such vulnerability on the line for the characters. A hard film to stomach at times Galveston does not shy away from laying it all on the line thanks to striking visuals and engrossing characters. Both heartbreaking and beautiful

Love small and independent films with interesting plots and good performances. This is an example of that.

Would make for an absolutely killer HBO miniseries, giving its compelling narrative all the time in the world for fleshy characterization that was sorely needed in this film's overly brief 90 minutes. Foster + Fanning are excellent, as are Laurent's cinematographical flourishes, but the narrative ellipses and rushed ending leave too much to be desired. Still, a worthwhile neo-noir bleeding with cynicism that leaves no grim stone unturned.

Very solid with glimpses of greatness. Foster is terrific.

Strains for, how you say, effect--Fanning's white trash beauty queen, reclining on the hood one exquisitely bronzed morning, awakens Foster with a whispery rendition of Big Star's "Thirteen", carrying on ghostlike over the soundtrack. Not quite as bad as Pizza taking "Jim Hammett" as his pseudonym, tho--good lawd. Weirdly, it's Laurent who can't seem to shake TRUE DETECTIVE. There's even an elaborate single-take escape near the end that manages to play even more flatly than everything before it.

Really wanted to like this better as I really liked they book, but it somehow seem a bit flat and rushed. Especially the ending.
