Gripping adaptation that expansively incorporates the sea and sky while simultaneously generating a feeling of claustrophobia as the walls close in. Really very good, and the Shostakovich score has some very effective parts. As Peter O'Toole said, the story is a tragedy about three sons of murdered fathers, Hamlet, Laertes and Fortinbras, and their varied ways of responding to their grief and ire...but in this version, Fortinbras, the one governed more by reason, is really sidelined.

The best hamlet adaptation!

I'm not sure it's THE Hamlet, there are times when it overdoes the operatics and some of the cuts to the script (Hamlet's death scene in particular) make it feel a bit rushed, but it comes as close to it as any film version I've seen. The gates shut like jaws or jail doors, and then everyone starts going crazy... The music, the visuals, waves crashing against the beach...

While more than a bit rushed, it makes up for it with it's astonishing visuals.
