Begins with a marriage full of booze and the man killing his wife on their wedding night. Ends with him marrying another woman, now in a church full of Christian symbols of sacrifice and salvation. Truly remarkable take on Brazil's perennial hypocrisy, urban violence (bar brawl is pure mayhem) and brutality in every level of society -- from industrial, corporate elites trying to finally "build" our future to a vile sense of morality that defines relationships. Dreamy, raw, poetic, mundane.

This is said to be one of the most important Brazilian films of the era. There is a lot of cool angles and cutting to make the scenes. I especially loved the fighting ones! The bar brawl gave me a big smile! However the movie at times tries to be too creative. A bit too arty in it's narrative which often makes silent movies difficult to follow. But there is quality and I'm sure most hardcore movie fans will find things to like here and there.
