Pat Shortt is exceptional in this slow paced tragi-comedy about the life one man has made for himself in rural Ireland. One of my favourite Abrahamson films.

Touching story about a simple petrol station worker set in rural Ireland. Shortt is, much to my surprise, perfectly cast in the lead role. The film really captures the problems faced by Josie, who is unknowingly trapped in rural Ireland without the necessary skills to branch out. It's not as depressing as one might think as the plot is lightened by numerous humorous moments. Quite simply, this is the best Irish movie that I've seen.

A good and well told story about a lonely and simple worker at an old petrol station somewhere in rural Ireland and one tragic summer. It's low pace depicts accurately the kind of life Josie is living, but also makes it feel a bit longish - I think I would prefer it as a short.

Top badass moment? Josie’s impression of the Terminator. He appears to just stand in the same position by the lake for hours as the night turns into day. This is an occasionally amusing but depressing movie about a man barely able to live independently, who’s socially bullied by everyone. When he then makes a stupid decision they all turn on him. Must be horrible living in a town full of Sun readers. And as for the guy with the bag of puppies… FUA. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

Oh poor old Josie, you were too good for this world anyway.

Pat Shortt is revelatory in this low-key, low-budget, powerful tragi-comedy. It's a movie that deserves much more attention; if you're into character studies, you really should give this a shot, as I've never really seen anything quite like it. It's unusual, but by no means quirky; and it's slow-paced, but the inevitable climax still comes as a shock.

Tricky to rate, but worth watching.
