It's slightly unpolished but 'Gaslight' is a fine thriller. Walbrook's turn as the villainous husband is nothing short of terrific.

Anton Walbrook is amazing in this. He is the embodiment of a gaslighting abuser.

This really isn't a bad movie, but the remake improves on it in almost every way. Is it better to slowly build tension, or cut to the chase? I felt like this was a little too rushed, getting straight to the beats of the plot without building that sense of dread and helplessness. As for the casting, Boyer vs.Walbrook: draw. Wynyard vs. Bergman: Bergman. Pettingell vs. Cotten: Pettingell better character, Cotten better performance. Again, not a bad movie but the remake does it so much better.

Interesting and sucks you right into it even if one might fear it would be too dated to be catchy. Not many abuse-themed thrillers leave me too concerned, but this one had me horrified at the cruelty of the husband character and the helplessness of the wife.

I feel bad for this film from 1940. It is a fine film, but really gets overshadowed by the much better remake from 1944. I am sure those who worked on the film, despite certainly being dead by now, appreciates that.

Not quite the excellent noir-ish thriller I thought I remembered. Maybe I saw the other version as a child. It's ok though.

"Now you're helpless and I'm mad." Despite the brilliant ending, I didn't like this film. I think that it would have been so much better with the absence of a score, the silence was really needed to add to the dread and would have served Wyngard and Walbrook's acting well. The ex policeman served as more of an interruption to the suspense than anything important. It's unfortunate, I was sure I'd like it.

A neat psychological thriller that gets the balance right between dark and light. On one hand, you have a deliciously cruel Anton Walbrook mentally torturing his poor wife... and on the other hand you have some light relief offered up by the saucy maid and Petingell's Sherlockian character, who treats the whole thing as if it's a big game. I haven't seen the 1944 version yet, but thought this was good fun.

(I can't compare this to the 1944 version, because I haven't seen that one yet.) A brooding thriller with an excellent cast. The photography mostly works, although at times, it does feel like it's a stage play trying to remember it's now a movie.

This could definitely have been better (eager to see the remake), but it's no slouch. The plot is a classic tale of deception by methods now named after the film. While Anton Walbrook's character's actions are well into Snidely Whiplash territory, his performance brings just the right amount of charm to feel truly creepy and threatening; he does with the role what Vincent Price might have, with none of the reputation.

The main setup works and develops nicely until the final fourth where it loses its finesse. Overall a lesser film compared to its American remake.

Dark and well staged film. Uses psychology like few other films of the time. A credit that should go to the source material of Patrick Hamilton play. The writing is shear brilliance, which is why it's so enduring on both sides of the continent. All the actors have to do is follow the easy instructions as Diana Wynyard with her gentle approach lives the character with Anton Walbrook performance gradually growing into the part of the manipulative husband. Wonderful film!
