Gentleman Jim

Most boxing films wallow in corruption, or use the sport as a metaphor for the protagonist's warring soul, but Walsh's film is a romantic take on boxing, with a bittersweet undercurrent. Flynn, in one of his best performances, is Jim Corbett, an Irish-American who "rises above" his class to hobnob with high society and win fame and fortune in the ring. He defeats the brawling, blustery John L. Sullivan in a fight that not only legitimized the sport, but symbolized Irish assimilation.

A film about celebrity pretending to be a film about boxing. I'm not convinced I've rated it correctly, so this is subject to change.

Flynn and Hale are excellent as Corbett and O'Sullivan. A rarity: a really enjoyable Hollywood biopic.

At some point it feels like someone at Warners just said, "Let's make every movie a Jimmy Cagney movie" and then they never cast Cagney in 'em.
