Bertram Pincus (Ricky Gervais), is a man whose people skills leave much to be desired. When Pincus dies unexpectedly, but is miraculously revived after seven minutes, he wakes up to discover that he now has the annoying ability to see ghosts. Even worse, they all want something from him, particularly Frank Herlihy (Greg Kinnear) who pesters him into breaking up the impending marriage of his widow Gwen (Téa Leoni). That puts Pincus squarely in the middle of a triangle with spirited results.

Of course it feels formulaic, but Gervais elevates this film above other recent romantic comedies (although most of the time it felt like watching "Extras"). It's a fine example of a passable film, now that doesn't mean it's bad, it's just not satisfying enough, watch it on a rainy afternoon ;)...

Eh. Good acting and chemistry between characters, although forced and rushed at times. Good comedy moments, although a lot were predictable and extremely awkward, which really isn't my kind of comedy. And as for the storyline, it's simply a cliched romcom with a twist, and not even the great Ricky Gervais, who was actually disappointing at times in terms of acting, can really lift it from that. But, yeah, all in all, I suppose it's handled much better compared to other films of this genre.

A clichéd comedy elevated by Ricky Gervais, who can certainly make even the most wornout crap watchable. The man is pure genius, and though this isn't The Office or Extras, Ghost Town still manages to generate a few good laughs. Greg Kinnear is a waste of space, though.

Highly disappointing showcase for Gervais. Fans of the BBC Office and Extras will not care for this since it traffics in much of the same predictable mainstream mediocrity Gervais and Merchant mock. While not as egregiously offensive as the more contemptible romantic comedies, this one merely lies there innocuously. Worse? It's not funny. When Gervais does his awkward schtick it falls flat and makes you wonder if he needs to move onto a new trick. Listen to the Pilkingon podcasts instead.

It was funny enough with good performances from the leads but I felt the script was lacking and I didn't really buy the romace, it was too forced. I like Gervais in anything so I can't complain too much, he was good in this. A little too formulaic, forced and rushed to be anything better than 'average-good'

Gervais is a funny guy, but has ZERO romatic lead appeal. Considering he's not all that good looking, you'd think they'd play up the 'nice guy' routine... but they don't. With absolutely no chemistry with Leoni this movie outright fails.

Enjoyable, if formulaic and flawed. Gervais gives his best big screen performance with genuine moments of comedy, with Leoni and Kinnear adding some class. The characters (in particular Gervais') do some odd contradictory things in order to forward the plot, and overall it feels a little shallow and underdeveloped. None-the-less "Ghost Town" will entertain during its runtime and get a few laughs along the way.

Not bad but is very uneven. It has short hilarious bits when Gervais is allowed to flex his considerable humorous might, but when he tries to be heartfelt or when Leoni is left for herself on the screen the movie slows way down. The film has multiple messages to be sure, but it drives them home a bit too gently in the end. Speaking of, something almost happens near the end that would have really raised my score of the film, but it cops out in Hollywood style, leaving my hopes unrealized.

Gervais used to refuse to appear in films or TV shows that he didn't make himself. He changed his mind and warmed up to the idea, just like his character in this surprisingly very cute, very touching, very funny film. While I was occasionally taken out of the film for its understandable lack of physical sense (ghost people can't touch living people and are able to walk through doors and cars, but they can ride in cars, somehow) the humor and heart of the film would immediately bring me back in.

Ghost Town is funny, but it's also clichéd and occasionally boring. If you enjoy rom-coms, this is one of the better ones, but if you're not a fan, it won't change your mind. Ricky Gervais is good in the lead role, playing the straight man doing funny things, but is less than believable as a romantic lead. Still, I laughed a fair bit and I can't deny that Ghost Town was, for the most part, enjoyable. I can't give it a heartfelt recommendation, but it's a pretty good rom-com that I had fun with.

Very charming comedy (with surprisingly dramatic undertones) follows a path already well-trodden by A CHRISTMAS CAROL (and even GROUNDHOG DAY to an extent) but Gervais' unique, vitriolic comic persona (albeit toned down), and a stellar supporting cast, makes it a path worth treading again. Quite unexpectedly moving by the final reels.

The first couple of acts are sharper than you would expect (the "fuck off you annoying ghosts" angle seems to be fairly natural to the script, and not just shoe-horned in so the fat guy wouldn't seem out of place in the lead), and Gervais and Leoni are decent (Leoni is really likeable and natural for a while, until her character becomes the standard romcom damsel in distress). I knew it would suck at the end, and was expecting to forgive its sins, but it really does get pretty fucking cheesy.

I should preface this by saying I'm not a Gervais fan, based on his HBO stand-up special, a few episodes of Extras. I really didn't find his "what is THAT supposed to mean"/social satire type of humor funny at all in this movie. It just comes off as awkward. The whole seeing ghosts thing doesn't even get attention till the last act of the movie; the long, boring middle (which I had to skip through) is just him talking to Tea Leoni. Also, Hollywood: STOP WITH THE BUS/CAR/TRUCK ACCIDENT CLICHE!

'Ghost Town' really failed to impress me. The plot is so familiar and typical in every sense (think Scrooge meets Ghost), that even Ricky Gervais, talented as he is, didn't elevate it. Ghost Town is proof that Ricky Gervais should stick to British sitcoms. I love Ricky Gervais in The Office & Extras. And in small supporting roles in films he's tollerable. But in the leading of American comedies like this, personally I just don't think his humour translates well on screen. And sadly I get the impression that he takes these roles for financial and reputational gain. As apposed to actually focussing on his own material and his natural comedic talents. Bland, unfunny, forgettable.

It's not a bad movie, exactly, but it's not stand out great either. I enjoy the premise, and Ricky Gervais brings a unique perspective to this type of story, but ultimately there's just not a whole lot to this that makes it stand out. It's something I wouldn't mind watching again, but it's just a bit below par as comedies go. For Gervais, it's similar in quality to The Invention of Lying.

Much funnier than I expected. This is not a very original story. Swayze's been a ghost. Reese Witherspoon's been a ghost. Not long before this, Eva Longoria made an awful movie about being a ghost. But Gervais's comedy chops really elevate this movie beyond the "I see dead people schtick" and it really becomes a sweet and deceptively funny film.

As expected, the only reason to watch this movie is Ricky Gervais. It almost seems like they just made a standard romantic comedy in which a David Brent/Andy Millman kind of character would fit and that they just told him: well Ricky, this is the script, put as many of your personal humor in it as you can, because that'll be the only worthy part of this film.

It's a formula film, sure, but it's also a very good one. While there's nothing new here, it's rare that we get to see it with such high quality execution. All three leads have great chemistry, and bring a perfect balance of comedy and human gravitas to their roles -- as much as the movie made me laugh, what separates it from the pack is the way it made me cry. It sticks to its characters and doesn't make them change to suit the screenplay, and that honesty is its best quality. Great soundtrack.

Top badass moment? It’s probably hilarious… if you’re a dentist. It’s probably also hilarious if you were in it, given how often the 4th wall gets inadvertently trashed. As a movie it's a nice idea, but as substantial as a Dandelion clock. But RG is in it and it does sometimes hit the target. I agree about hail too. Also, in the US does a dentist always see you if you just walk into a surgery? In the UK you need to plan tooth ache weeks in advance. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

There's a beautiful subplot of dealing with regret - be that in life or in death. Ricky Gervais plays his staple cynical asshole that eventually learns how to love. Would have been more impactful had they toned down the childish absurdity between Gervais and the love interest. This movie is driven solely by the humour and comedy of Ricky Gervais and it really shines through. There's really nothing much to this, it's an extremely run-of-the-mill feel-good hollywood comedy with nothing much to offer. However Gervais does provide some really good comedy spots which had me laughing a couple of times, but that may just be because I'm a big Ricky Gervais fan. Ghost Town (2008) is pretty much like every other comedy/drama where the main character can suddenly interact with ghosts: the main character is a lot less freaked out about it than he should be, every ghost has some unfinished business, and there are plenty of jokes involving minor characters thinking he is crazy because (they think) he is talking to thin air.
