It's difficult neither to portray an angsty teenage girl as an empathetic everywoman nor as a selfish asshole; what's difficult is portraying her as both at once, which Ghost World manages with aplomb, helped immensely by Zwigoff's wry, askew portrayal of late 20th century suburbia as a hyperreal consumerist wasteland, a killer soundtrack, and Steve Buscemi doing some heavy lifting as pathetic middle-aged sad-sack Seymour, a character so unforgivably himself he's thoroughly endearing.

Birch's Enid may be a proto-hipster, but her revulsion for much of society is genuine. Essentially a misanthropist's coming-of-age story, this character study beautifully balances all the things that come with being one of those people that realizes that a hell of a lot of the things & people around you just aren't for you. It both illustrates why these characters feel the way they do & why feeling that way can leave a person "stuck" in a state society deems "immature" lest they take action

Teenage isolation and loneliness captured beautifully. Enid, while sometimes annoying in her pursuit for something greater, is adrift in a world of someone else's design. She continues to push, and strive, for something more, without really knowing how to do such a thing. Hell, I'll say it, folks, this is a PERFECT FILM. A certified 100! Who are you to argue?

Being different...in a world full of hypocrites and mediocrities..chasing dreams...chasing your place in todays society...chasing a reason for living. everything around you is moving, what about you? There is no happy end in Ghost World...there will be no happy end in live. That's what Enid and Seymour feel, terrifying to realize so many similarities to my own life.

I suppose GW is intended to appeal to the denizens of that proverbial slice of white bread suburbia, where angsty pre-teens suffer from severe cases of self-inflicted outcast syndrome--a frightening affliction that fills the hearts of impressionable youths with the urge to over-enhance their eyes with copious amounts of melancholy colorant and take grainy pictures of their pouty mugs with phone cameras precariously positioned approximately two feet above their heads. Buscemi is awesome, though!

Damn near perfect film, and I'm not just saying that because it resonated in such a personal way for me... or maybe I am, what do you care? I love the look of the film; the colors are crisp and bold, intentionally reminiscent of a comic book. Though the character of Seymour wasn't developed in the original comic, I thought his character was great---even if it's TOTAL wish fulfillment from the screenwriters---and I love Steve Buscemi. Recommended viewing for misfits, outcasts, and loners.

This is one of those movies that I saw at such a perfect place and time in my life that it hit very close to home and it's difficult for me to try to judge it through any sort of objective lens. It's a funny, cynical comedy, but also a surprisingly painful look at alienation and uncertainty of life after high school. (5/5)

Ghost World is a really great film. It contains a fantastic cast, a good amount of humor, strong drama, relatable characters and situations, and it plays against, not with, conventional coming-of-age stories. It's the type of film for people who are looking for something different, just like its lead characters. This is a brilliant slice of life, and I highly recommend checking it out. It'll be good for more than a single viewing.

Reminiscent of Heathers, in a way, but this is a film more concerned with deconstructing that sardonic, detached attitude than satirizing it. I was unconvinced by Johansson, but Birch and Buscemi are excellent and do justice to the film's great script.

Stays true to the spirit of the comic while adding much more. Birch is great as Enid - we know she's manipulative and a huge asshole but we can't help feeling for her and understanding her alienation.

Pretty mopey emo film with characters trying to find "meaning" in their life. It subtly mocks counterculture and various scenes but it falls into the trap of feeling a bit self important and smug about it. Buscemi is great in just about any role and he doesn't disappoint in this.

A good portrayal of that "we've just finished school so... umm, what now?" phase. I related to these characters which made it all the more enjoyable to watch. Thora Birch's character can be difficult to like at times but her mixture of 'bad girl' confidence and wit and complete and utter insecurity on the other hand is interesting and pretty realistic.

Ghost World was...disappointing. This could be because I saw it on this side of Juno and all the other quirky indie comedies about alienation, but I found no humor or insight in Ghost World. Zwigoff's distinctive direction is praiseworthy, but his script, although smart, is terribly unfunny. Birch and Buscemi were perfect for their roles, whereas Johansson seems out of place.

The plot is loose and meandering but it's no matter as the performances are strong (Buscemi as sad sack Seymour really shines), the indie quirkiness on point (see convenience store guy, art teacher), and the thematic threads thoroughly thought-provoking, as nostalgia, niche-dom, and the search for identity do battle with the uncertain future, capitalist suburbia, and loneliness in the post-high school void ("Just think, we'll never see Dennis again... It's actually totally depressing").

Better in the first half with terrifically scathing, cynical dialogue that would make Daria blush. But the relationship that develops and the ending doesn't work so well with me; I just liked the aimlessness of the young characters that's felt when the summer holidays kick in and you have no idea of what to do next, or whether you even want to do anything next.

The two leads remind me of people I knew in high school, but in the worst, worst possible way. I feel a bit self conscious hating on a movie that is all about how pointless it is to hate on everything. Or is the movie even about that? I hated it so much I can't even tell. Maybe that's how my brain filtered it in order to make it even watchable. Tell me, are we supposed to be on team hate or team hate the haters? It's a long time to be not relating to the main characters, regardless.

Ghost World is as quirky as it is mopey, with acerbic wit oozing out of the script and characters alike. The plot is shown from Birch's character's perspective, and while her and Johansson play mean-spirited post-highschoolers, she's worryingly relatable. Buscemi is great as the pitiable cautionary tale, and gives rise to a lot of humour. While there is no strong direction in this film, and its ending is wonderfully ambiguous, it's a fun, dark, interesting journey.

To label this film a comedy is a travesty. It is a superbly acted, written and directed drama about growing up, and the difficult choices we all have to make, particularly if we are on the "fringes" of society. Yes, it is fantastically funny in the first half - people say it slows down in the second half - thats the WHOLE point. As life closes in after the cosseted world of school and college, the fun, freedom and simplicity DOES end. Birch and Buscemi are simply fantastic. Sad, Funny, Relevant.

Top badass moment? A Buzzcocks song that’s not ‘that’ Buzzcocks song. I used to have green hair like Enid - even in my passport photo. I still would - if there was any left. I guess those stories about bleaching hair really are true. I love this film, as I’m pretty sure I’m still some sort of societal malcontent, who spends too much time listening to music no one likes, doing stuff I'm too old to do and believes that pretty much everything sucks. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

The heroine, out of a comic book by Clowes, is someone a critic could love. Fresh out of high school -- or rather, jaded out of high school -- she can produce an equal sneer for the wheelchair-bound valedictorian ("High school is like the training wheels for the bicycle of real life") and for the hip-hopping black cheerleaders who follow. A tireless crapehanger, a walking crap detector, alienated, aloof, alert, aware, unaccepting, reacting, resisting, judging: Little Miss Raincloud.

A quirky coming of age film about an intelligent nerdy girl who finds it hard to identify with her peers as she graduates from high school. She meets an older man who embodies few of the qualities she has learned to despise. Their mutual love of obscure music forms a connection even though their age remains a barrier to them. She is unable to hide her disdain for others and loses one job after another. Her opportunities and options dwindle until she has little to lose by disappearing.

Enjoyable comedy-drama about a cynical high school graduate and her relationships with her best friend and an older man, a jazz-loving loner. Some scenes that feel excessively quirky, and Scarlett Johansson seems just a bit miscast, but Thora Birch as the lead, and Steve Buscemi as the older man, are both strong. The well-done script scored an Oscar nomination; the direction is sympathetic and straightforward, the ambiguous ending aside. The Bollywood musical number over the credits is great.

No need for me to compare this at all to Clowes' beautiful comics: against odds and especially in spite of "Bad Santa" [2003] being entirely cringe-y and vacuous, this one is quite fine standing on its own. Although occasionally sluggish, a bit too self-satisfied and not as resonant as the comic, "Ghost World" is nevertheless an odd, piercing coming-of-age story. Despite its sometimes reality-proof quirkiness, the film is actually telling of teenage post-high-school anxiety, identity crisis in an ugly world and the troubles of being unique. And if it feels like it resides in its own arrogant bubble, well, it is ABOUT residing in one's own arrogant bubble so it gets away with it. Half of the times.

Gahhhhhh! So slow and almost painful at times to watch. Zwigoff's direction while praise worthy is not enough to distract me from my complete and utter disdain for Enid. The film almost would have worked better if she was goth, because at least her actions would have made sense. As it is you're just sitting there hoping that she would stop feeling sorry for herself and actually do something to change her situation. That said it was definitely well acted (not saying much given the characters).

Amusing and entertaining for the most part, though I found the focus on Enid and Seymour's relationship pretty insipid, and it consumes increasing amounts of the film's attention to the point that the third act is kinda just boring.
