No amount of reading about the injustice of the U.S. justice system can prepare you for the absolute despondent struggle of our nation's public defenders. This is a great portrait of the devastating moral failure of our time.

Documentarians take note - this is how it's done. Not once do we ever hear the director's voice. Not once are we led by their opinions or perspectives. Dawn Porter let's the image of these public defenders unfurl in their own right, while managing to capture the pain and emotion they battle by simply letting them tell their story. No obnoxious injections. No subjugated editing. Just purely shot film that allows the viewers to form their own opinions.
