(Viewed in 2013): Regarded as a transitional effort, it's easy to recognise the seeds being planted here for Andersson's later films. There is a move away from realism towards abstraction, particularly in the use of space and lighting. There are no close ups and space is often used to highlight the distance between people and things. Caught somewhat awkwardly between his old and new style, Giliap fails to wholly convince yet acts as a fascinating bridge charting the director's development.
