Gilles' Wife

A spectacular-looking film, due to the way Fonteyne and his cinematographer combine mise-en-scene and lighting to make every shot look like a Renaissance painting. The story is a bit simple, but enjoying this film is all about appreciating the way the camera lingers on Devos's face until a sentiment is stirred up in the viewer, and observing the so subtle body language and looks which convey the characters' exchanges in the absence of dialogue. A mature, intricate and rewarding composition.
