All the points are for the jawdropping art direction which really is akin to the Vermeer style. It's hard to forgive the total lack of drama and simple characterizations. Vermeer, portraited by a grouchy Firth, is a flat character here that basically only conveys that he's weak and wants to fuck Griet. Even if this were true, which ofc is possible, i think he deserves to have at least some glimmers of his inspiration or genius creative force bequeathed on the viewer

It's a 17th century white-people-costume-drama through and through but it's pretty to look at and it ends nicely.

Vemeer was a great artist of his time, but we get little of interest or insight into his life with this awkward dreamy-staring slush.

Much better than the book, which I hated. It looks amazing as a film, but the subject matter just wasn't anything I was going to be interested in. It's one of those movies I would suggest my mom to see because I know she would love it. I do appreciate when they make someone who is incredibly pale and make them sexy. Gives hope to all pigment-less people everywhere.

I'm just sick of Scarlett Johanson's single expression (pouty) and gawky body language. If viewers would look at her face instead of her chest, they would realize that there's not much going on behind her rather unpleasant teen age facade.

Artistic (no pun intended), awesome acting, and well rounded in just about everything else. This movie really makes you appreciate art on a whole new level.

As a fairly faithful adaptation of the book, this movie gives a fictional back story to one of Johannes Vermeer's most famous paintings. Both the book and the movie are meant to be more "art in literature" and "art on film" than anything else. When taken for its artistic merit, this does succeed in its target for creating "mood".

Stunningly gorgeous cinematography elevate this otherwise standard period pseudo-biopic. Great use of reds, greens and of light make the film look as it had been painted by Vermeer.

One of those "your mother would love it" kind of films, it's all too surface level to be engaging (for it being a film about an artist there's basically no discussion about art). Firth and Johansson just stare at each other slack-jawed, it's actually Essie Davis who's the hysterical MVP here.

When her father goes blind, Griet (Scarlett Johansson) must go to work as a maid for painter Johannes Vermeer (Colin Firth). While cleaning the house, Griet strikes up an unlikely friendship with Vermeer, which both agree to keep secret for fear of provoking the painter's jealous wife, Catharina (Essie Davis). When wealthy patron Van Ruijven (Tom Wilkinson) begins to lust after Griet, and commissions a painting of her, Vermeer and Griet are obliged to spend long hours alone together.

Well made flick ultimately derived from a painting, the setting and locations are very good giving you a feel for the time. The acting is all quite well done, especially Firth as the love torn character. My biggest issue is it could have used a little more pace at times.

With it's premise I expected some knockout Greenaway/Lynch painterly visuals, It didn't deliver them. Though the sets were good scenes alternated between orange and teal filters. The story itself was a little predictable but Firth, ScarJo and Wilkinson made it enjoyable enough.

As sumptuous and rich as the lips os Scarlett Johansson, this picture provides an inside look at the creative process, and how the melodrama of everyday life, can transport artist and his art to a place beyond the personal.

Lovely movie, from a lovely book. Scarlett is gorgeous (lick those lips!) and nicely cranky, and I'm a sucker for the subject matter -- inspiration and the creative process. Especially when it's about Vermeer! A fascinating glimpse into historical Delft, too.

Great performances from Firth and Johansson. I actually like Johansson a lot better in these roles than in her more popular films. Still, the movie is rather boring throughout, and once you get over how cool the setting is, you just sort of wait until the film ends.

Seems like the film-makers used up most of their creative energies getting the visual elements right, but forgot about including a compelling story in the process. Firth's portrayal of Vermeer as a simpering milquetoast was particularly annoying. Grow some balls, man!

Scarlett Johansson seems to have no idea how to play this part, but I can't blame her -- half of the movie consists of her being startled by someone walking in on her. The film betrays its own sources by being arduous and passionless, and it's the kind of empty, insipid period-romance that gives those films a bad name. The art direction and cinematography are solid, I guess. I can find little value in this movie.
