Not boring but doesn't really add up to anything.

Understated but enjoyable, as much as a time capsule as anything else. Great to get a look at attractive young Christopher Guest. Melanie Mayron plays the same character from thirtysomething I'm so familiar with - I suspect it's just herself.

Loneliness in the big city. Or independence in the big city. Does it have to be one or the other? The drifting - back and forth, together and apart - is the essence of this film. Melanie Mayron is a total charm.

Excellent quintessentially NYC indie drama by Claudia Weill who really should have made more feature films, with a Woody-Allenish Melanie Mayron in the lead and a bubbly supporting cast. Everyone should watch this.

Reminds me somewhat of Woody Allen's sober work. At times very sensitive, at others, unremarkable. I think I've become fond of Bob Balaban.

Is this still a hidden gem? It definitely shouldn't be. Hilarious start to finish. Very smart. Very influential. If it were made today it'd be a smash imo.

I had to double check and make sure I wasn't watching the 1978 version of Frances Ha. There's a moment where Susan gets a haircut, and the next scene is her with a giant fro. It is played for laughs, but I was thinking, "damn, that looks cool as hell".

not to downplay the importance of it, but as a frances ha fan, I'm glad this film exists since it feels like that one drew a ton from this one. but obvs the film's historical significance is beyond that for it was made when studios were running away from personal, small films that have a *handmade* feeling. a great character film.

I had a good time with this, but it never quite hit that next level for me. To be quite honest, at first I thought it was going to be an LGBTQ piece, but then once I realized what it actually is I was still on board. Melanie Mayron gives a great lead performance & the supporters around her, especially Anita Skinner & Eli Wallach, are also a delight. As far as slow-moving slice of life films go, I liked this a lot more than some I've seen, but it also doesn't rank among my favorites. Good watch.

Ultimately I like what it was going for, but the screenplay could have definitely used one more pass. Despite being a mostly decent character study it's still manages to be a little too meandering and unfocused for my taste. Where the film absolutely succeeds is Melanie Mayron who is fantastic as the offbeat lead. The supporting cast is also great, especially Anita Skinner and Bob Balaban. Not perfect by any means, but I can see why this is a landmark in quirky indie filmmaking.

While Eli Wallach is always a joy to watch, his character as well as all the others in the movie are unlikable selfish brats. Does that make them realistic, maybe but it doesn't make them all that fun to watch.

Kubrick said about it, "That film, I thought, was one of the very rare American films that I would compare with the serious, intelligent, sensitive writing and filmmaking that you find in the best directors in Europe."

Pretty good indie film. Some parts of it were more engaging than others, but I always enjoyed the lead performance.
