I could quibble about the historical inaccuracies, the predictable revenge-driven plot, and the sometimes-wonky CGI, but those issues are minor next to how big, brawny, and just plain badass this movie is. It's a capital-E Epic with the kind of primal power missing from most modern cinema. The stellar acting, directing, and cinematography give the ancient Roman world a vitality rarely seen on film. Masterpiece soundtrack to boot.

(after repeat viewings) I'm not ashamed to admit this used to be my favourite film back when I was 12; Watching it now, I have a beef with its rather pompous attitude. Mostly a spectacle for the eyes and ears. The acting, however, is formidable, notably Phoenix, you beard growing lunatic. Not the best film ever made but hard to dislike because it looks and feels so great.

Romans = Americans. Blew your mind then didn't I? Both distract people from scrutinising their government hijinks with pointless contact sports and lions eating people if they step off the field. Their uncannily similar accents also tipped me off.

Ridley is kicking back on his sofa, lazily flipping through channels with his remote control. He stumbles upon 'Airplane'. A little kid has been invited to the cockpit. The captain asks him 'Joey.. do you like movies about gladiators?'. Scott's eyes flicker ever so slightly: 'Hmmmmmm...'

I know it's clichéd, I know it's a little overrated but all I could think while watching Gladiator was that it's one damn fine film. The scenery and visuals are top notch, as you'd expect, but the film also has some excellent action and a cast of actors that work surprisingly well. Nobody is going to say that it's an accuate account of Rome, after all Hollywood is remown for it's factual errors, but when it provides much entertainment and unlocks the potential of a setting, it's easily forgiven.

Gorgeous with great battle scenes. Scott did a good job of creating the atmosphere at the time. There are some magnificent moments in the film, except I hate theway Scott decided to go with the ending, pretty over the top. I still like this film though, it's watchable and entertaining.

I really can't find any glaring faults here. It's a classic-feeling story, and it's fun, too. Everyone here was feeling it. 20 years from now, this'll be referred to as an important epic, and for good reason.

A visually stunning film with great direction by Scott and impressive action sequences. It's also backed up with a good cast; Phoenix and Harris stand out among other good performances. Even so, can you not predict pretty much everything that will happen after about 20 minutes? It's too much the standard Hollywood-fare. Certainly good, but still a bit overrated. A focused and engaging story which is well paced makes this one of the better Hollywood blockbusters.

heavily overrated, which doesn't mean it's a bad film. then again, with ridley at the helm (along with the reputation of this film) i was expecting more... the lack of any sort of gray area can be trying; maximus is a model citizen who is endlessly wronged, and commodus is a incestuous asshole who is wholly evil. three cheers for multifaceted characters!

I personally loved this movie. The score is really amazing, as is the cinematography, like the rest of Scotts better works. Good performances from Crowe and Phoenix, with some decent supporting cast. The story had me engaged as did the production and the directing. Again, another well-made movie by Ridley Scott.

Better than I remembered. The politics aren't remotely complex, but they're also not stuffy, because of the interesting characters and performances driving them (despite the fact that Maximus is pretty much the badass analog of a Mary Sue). Joaquin Phoenix in particular is excellent; his performance isn't camp so much as willing melodrama, which, given the material, feels prudent. And of course, the production values and battle scenes are beyond reproach.

Marked the glorious return of the historical epic! A captivating story of vengeance for his murdered family powers Russell Crowe's Oscar winning performance and the visual recreation of Rome is one of cinema's finest hours. Crowe is the Spaniard, a former General who was betrayed by the son of the dying Caesar and is captured attempting to save his family. The Gladiator games that he must compete in are devastating in their realism and the music and cinematography are the stuff of modern legend.

Not very believable performances from anyone... and I don't mean historically believable (because who cares, really?), I simply didn't buy the caricaturized villains and heroes. No one is as evil as Commodus, no one is as good and honorable as Maximus. That's the biggest flaw, but it is an enjoyable film overall. The battle sequences were (ironically?) pretty entertaining when you could see them through the shaky cam.

Most amazing movie i have seen in my avid movie-goer lifetime. Lots of action, sensible romance, and suspensful plot twists each appeal to each viewer. Absolutely no disappointment and will leave your mind in a state of perpetual amazement. Russel Crowe is a perfect fit for the role of Maximus, a fallen general in ancient Roman times winds up as a slave. He fights his way through the coliseum preaching teamwork to the fellow gladiators to over come the ancient ways to bring back the republic.

Watched this again for thie first time in 5 years. The ending is so ridiculous, I study Roman history. The historical inacuracies are annoying, it really should've been a Commodus biopic; he's an interesting real historical figure. Crowe's acting is fairly weak. Despite these criticisms, respect for epic scope, amazing combat sequences, great visuals, and introducing people to Rome. SPQR

Were Gladiator made 40 years before, it would be revered as a classic and it would probably be compared to the likes of Ben-Hur and Lawrence of Arabia. But this is modern Hollywood, people don't grow up, they grow down. And as a result, Gladiator has received mixed reviews from critics to audiences. Personally, I love it. I love the scope and the sophistication. Crowe carries the film on his shoulders, and THAT is Oscar-worthy, people. I can't think of anyone else better-suited as Maximus.

Heralded by many of the male persuasion as the greatest film ever made: unequaled in intensity, story, morality and action. Well, beneath the veneer of greed and revenge; lies a testosterone-driven epic worth only the price of hearing Russell Crowe yelp at the top of his lungs: "I will have my VENGEANCE, in this life or the next". Moreover, Scott's average directing adds no redemptive qualities by providing shamefulness where unneeded, nevertheless it offers laughs when need be.

Epic like dragging a mountain across the desert & it feels like I'm doing the dragging. I'll never understand what people saw in this. Action scenes are choppy and unclear - impossible to see exactly what's happening. The movie also clearly was written on the run since there's a whole build-up to a story-line that hints to a huge battle between armies and then anti-climatically the whole plan falls apart and we get a (necessarily cheaper given the already soaring budget) battle between 2 men.

And if I didn't know any better, I would say it also resembles a video game's construction and moralism (I WILL NOW FIGHT THE EVIL CEASAR! with a handicap!). It has some surprisngly uninspired cinematography in parts, but borders on avant-garde in others. So I'm not very impressed with the film's schizophrenia, but it's still good with some popcorn.
