I could quibble about the historical inaccuracies, the predictable revenge-driven plot, and the sometimes-wonky CGI, but those issues are minor next to how big, brawny, and just plain badass this movie is. It's a capital-E Epic with the kind of primal power missing from most modern cinema. The stellar acting, directing, and cinematography give the ancient Roman world a vitality rarely seen on film. Masterpiece soundtrack to boot.

(after repeat viewings) I'm not ashamed to admit this used to be my favourite film back when I was 12; Watching it now, I have a beef with its rather pompous attitude. Mostly a spectacle for the eyes and ears. The acting, however, is formidable, notably Phoenix, you beard growing lunatic. Not the best film ever made but hard to dislike because it looks and feels so great.

Ridley is kicking back on his sofa, lazily flipping through channels with his remote control. He stumbles upon 'Airplane'. A little kid has been invited to the cockpit. The captain asks him 'Joey.. do you like movies about gladiators?'. Scott's eyes flicker ever so slightly: 'Hmmmmmm...'

Romans = Americans. Blew your mind then didn't I? Both distract people from scrutinising their government hijinks with pointless contact sports and lions eating people if they step off the field. Their uncannily similar accents also tipped me off.

Better than I remembered. The politics aren't remotely complex, but they're also not stuffy, because of the interesting characters and performances driving them (despite the fact that Maximus is pretty much the badass analog of a Mary Sue). Joaquin Phoenix in particular is excellent; his performance isn't camp so much as willing melodrama, which, given the material, feels prudent. And of course, the production values and battle scenes are beyond reproach.

I personally loved this movie. The score is really amazing, as is the cinematography, like the rest of Scotts better works. Good performances from Crowe and Phoenix, with some decent supporting cast. The story had me engaged as did the production and the directing. Again, another well-made movie by Ridley Scott.

heavily overrated, which doesn't mean it's a bad film. then again, with ridley at the helm (along with the reputation of this film) i was expecting more... the lack of any sort of gray area can be trying; maximus is a model citizen who is endlessly wronged, and commodus is a incestuous asshole who is wholly evil. three cheers for multifaceted characters!

A visually stunning film with great direction by Scott and impressive action sequences. It's also backed up with a good cast; Phoenix and Harris stand out among other good performances. Even so, can you not predict pretty much everything that will happen after about 20 minutes? It's too much the standard Hollywood-fare. Certainly good, but still a bit overrated. A focused and engaging story which is well paced makes this one of the better Hollywood blockbusters.

I know it's clichéd, I know it's a little overrated but all I could think while watching Gladiator was that it's one damn fine film. The scenery and visuals are top notch, as you'd expect, but the film also has some excellent action and a cast of actors that work surprisingly well. Nobody is going to say that it's an accuate account of Rome, after all Hollywood is remown for it's factual errors, but when it provides much entertainment and unlocks the potential of a setting, it's easily forgiven.

Absolutely no disappointment and will leave your mind in a state of perpetual amazement. Russel Crowe is a perfect fit for the role of Maximus, a fallen general in ancient Roman times winds up as a slave. He fights his way through the coliseum preaching teamwork to the fellow gladiators to over come the ancient ways to bring back the republic.

Not very believable performances from anyone... and I don't mean historically believable (because who cares, really?), I simply didn't buy the caricaturized villains and heroes. No one is as evil as Commodus, no one is as good and honorable as Maximus. That's the biggest flaw, but it is an enjoyable film overall. The battle sequences were (ironically?) pretty entertaining when you could see them through the shaky cam.

Marked the glorious return of the historical epic! A captivating story of vengeance for his murdered family powers Russell Crowe's Oscar winning performance and the visual recreation of Rome is one of cinema's finest hours. Crowe is the Spaniard, a former General who was betrayed by the son of the dying Caesar and is captured attempting to save his family. The Gladiator games that he must compete in are devastating in their realism and the music and cinematography are the stuff of modern legend.

A professional soldier is forced to get a job in the entertainment industry; his nemesis is wracked by incestuous desire: still, not as fun as it sounds. Reviewers at the time seem to have been favourably disposed, feeling that it brought a moribund genre back to life. Watching it for the first time twenty-three years later, such praise seems like willful blindness to its manifest weaknesses. Scholars may have been consulted, but this is still an utterly Hollywoodian portrayal of ancient times.

Gladiator is an epic experience in every sense of the word. Ridley Scott both masterfully & remarkably turns his filmmaking talents to yet another genre and Gladiator worthily ranks alongside his finest work. Visually this is complete escapism and the stunning cinematography & Hans Zimmer's rousing score collaborate perfectly to create several staggeringly impressive set pieces. Whilst Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Djimon Honsou, Oliver Reed & Richard Harris make-up a remarkably stellar cast.

One of my most favorite films for all times. A highly respected general of the Roman Empire is stripped of his livelihood and family, when the son of the recently deceased Emperor decides that he is a threat to his leadership. A wonderful spectacle, from start to finish, with performances to match. In roles absolutely tailor made for Crowe, Phoenix, Neilson and Reed, Gladiator has both the emotional content and the thrills to draw the viewer into the story. If a measure of the success of a film is based on whether it has an absolutely iconic movie moment in it, then Maximus' speech to the Emperor Commodus is it, not only in Crowes delivery, but the fantastic way Pheonix receives it. Special effects are simply amazing.

The history and politics are ridiculous but who cares, it's a fable. Pure heroic spectacle from start to finish with brutal action, shouting drama, huge score and epic storytelling. At the end I couldn't quite tell what all of it was about exactly but darn if it wasn't impressive. Yes the plot is quite underwhelming but the real story is in the chest-pounding action, sweeping spectacle and overall operatic histrionics.

Scott's epic spectacle has a simple but wonderfully executed story, even in spite of the overly romanticized finale, and the action scenes, on the battlefield and in the arena, are nothing short of masterful. Crowe's on fine form as Maximus but Phoenix steals the film with the finest performance of this early career. The music is stirring and the costumes and sets gloriously detailed, making this vision of Ancient Rome feel uncommonly authentic.

I honestly don't know how I managed to avoid this movie for so long. What seperates it from other epics in the same genre such as "Troy" is that this is throughoutly engaging and very intense and whereas it seems major actors usually have a tendency to mail it in when it comes to these kinds of films, Russel Crowe delivers a stand-out performance here. It would be unfair to say the other actors don't deliver though as the movie is generally really well cast and overall a great movie from Scott.
