It's typical Poliakoff, in that it uses family history and deep dark family secrets as much of its central focus, and very effectivly too. Also typical of Poliakoff is the sumptuous way in which "Glorious 39" is shot. It is a shame however that even the excellent Romola Garai cannot save this from being one of Poliakoff's clumsiest scripts, and no one can save Bill Nighy from the fact he is a terrible actor!

A clandestine group of government officials convinced the only way to save England is to make concessions with Germany. A mild mannered aristocrat is secretly the head of the dark covert group intent on preventing Winston Churchill's agenda. They employ any means to maintain their secrecy, including murder. When his adopted daughter is caught trying to expose them, they take extreme efforts to discredit, isolate and keep her silent.

Romola Garai is a nice actress, her old-fashioned looks suit these period pieces and her fragile vulnerability allows her to portray a desperate heroine very effectively. This film has an interesting dramatic setup and a thrilling crescendo through the middle section; unfortunately it's far too long and the resolution is a drawn-out, incoherent mess. What a truly terrible final third Poliakoff's pen produced, a huge let down given the strong cast and exquisite cinematography and locations.

For me, the characters didn't ring true and the story dragged.
