seriously hindered by an underwhelming resolution, but sleaze, crooks and small-town melancholy have that special place in my...thing in...the...chest area. a simple script with the occasional unexpected turn, good performances, overall a pretty solid directorial debut for slattery.

Interesting performances vitiated by a weak plot, unfocused direction, and self-conscious, overdone working class sleaze. An obvious exercise in slumming--and that's never attractive. Standout performances: a bewildered, gorgeous Christina Hendricks and a sad alcoholic Richard Jenkins (a much underrated actor). Hoffman and Turturro are good too.

I thought it was pretty good. A gritty, rough little film that has some stale moments but also some very intense ones.

This is a dark, interesting film. The script has some original and interesting moments. This film has a good cast who all do good work here. Overall I would recommend this film.

There's a good, solid performance from the late Philip Seymour Hoffman and im not sure what else I can say of it really. There are one or two amusing moments and I couldn't not respect the sense of perserverance that the characters (mainly the main character, Mickey Scarpato) have to begrudgingly deal with. There is some narration provided at the start and towards the end. It could be seen as a little preachy perhaps but I reckon its worth seeing for Hoffmans performance alone, if nothing else.

Excellent small-scale tragi-comedy, that occasionally (especially at the end) took a different direction than I expected. Except the story did no favours to the women, whose roles seemed under-realised.

Loads of wasted potential, not only in the cast, but in the script too. Slattery tries hard but falls flat on his face.

Excellent performances in a quirky small-town movie.

Moody, gritty slice-of-(low)life. Uniformly good acting, and Philip Seymour Hoffman is fantastic.

Decent performances, but a painfully dull drama. God's Pocket seems to be populated exclusively by racists or the clinically depressed. Given the premise, and the way certain scenes play out, the film would have been much better had it leaned more into the intrinsic comedy of the situation.

Interesting crime comedy by Slattery, structured of neighborhood tales that resemble early Scorsese and some of the Coen Brothers films. If the mise-en-scène sometimes feels too reductive -- shots begin with people entering bars, houses and stores, end with people leaving these places --, the performances bring good scenes with sparks of joy and brutality. God's Pocket is about how to live in a city where everyone knows everyone. If you are from outside -- like Ric and Phil --, watch your step.

The performances from Hoffman, Turturro and Jenkins though very good, are not reason enough to justify wading through this aimless and unoriginal film.
