Lulzy acting, anti-war themes, and plot produce a good time for all stoned souls.

drab no-budget monster movie with heavyhanded social commentary. effects are all pathetic, characters almost as bad. the best part is the first 15 minutes. the red clouds and building suspense are a lot more interesting than the actual monster, which takes up the remaining hour of the film.

A greasy combo meal of cliches and moralizing.

Little too heavy on the histrionic group dynamics for my tastes - not to mention more than a little blunt in its anti-war themes - but the sci-fi horror elements are delightfully pulpy fun.

Best of the Shochiku horrors that I've seen but that's not to say I liked it too much. Some nice visuals and FX but they could have done more with the premise. They really had a colorful group of passengers on that plane - what are the odds..

A decent concept and the actual horror part is pretty well executed, it's just a shame that so much time is spent on the group dynamics drama that might be interesting on the page but comes off terribly with the bad actors and cheap production values of the film. The heavyhanded war commentary is incredibly ineffective and borderline offensive, so that's doesn't help either.

Only someone who hasn't seen Matango could be impressed by this one. There's a fine line between portraying human cruelty and making caricatures of evil.

Bons: Scénario intéressant, enthousiasme visible au niveau de la réalisation. Mauvais: Rythme déficient, récit statique, le concept s'use au bout d'un moment.

Good enough. But honestly gets a little too weird sci-fi for me. Some cool effects here and there.

A lot of the best Cold War sci-fi is informed by the politics of their time. This one is very keenly aware of that but makes its points with sledgehammer bluntness. The characters ruminate out loud about the futility of war and the film even flashes photos of Vietnam and Hiroshima on the screen in case we didn't get it already. All awkwardness aside, though, this is a quite enjoyable slice of wild, paranoid, creepy nastiness with a hilariously one-dimensional crew of colourful characters.

It's not as great as House, but it does scratch a similar itch for a good portion of its runtime. It does have way too many moments that seem like the movie is ending, but the final ending makes all of those worth it with the absolute soul-crushing bleakness of it. WAR IS BAD, GUYS.
