James Bond Project 2017: We all know the iconic "Shaken, not stirred", well if asked how I would like my Bond film prepared I'll be hard pressed not to say "Goldfinger". This movie is THE quintessential James Bond movie, and I've only seen four Bond movies. Over the course of this project I'm curious about whether the movies simply rise and fall in quality, go over-the-top in cheese, or I simply just grow tired with the Bond gimmick? Stay tuned to see, but spoilers the answer is probably yes.

Fantastic James Bond film with Sean Connery at his finest. I'll be honest and say that I think Casino Royale is the best James Bond film but I'll be damned if anyone but Connery is the best James Bond. This film perfectly blends entertaining acting with a great plot and all the elements that will become signatures in James Bond films since this movie. This is the movie to see if you want to see a fantastic womanizing spy be just that.

Goldfinger is in many ways the quintessential 007 movie. It contains so many of the iconic Bond elements: Oddjob, Pussy Galore, "No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!", the Aston-Martin, et cetera. It's a shitload of fun, although it does slow down somewhat between Bond getting captured and the climax, which is a good 30-40 minute chunk of the film.

Goldfinger is easily one of the best Bond films out there. A really good plot with some memorable characters, and of course, the usual Bond with his quick witted comments. Goldfinger is everything a Bond film has always been, except here, it is at its best.

A near masterpiece. Has several iconic scenes, great action, hilarious one liners, and great villains in OddJob and Goldfinger (with both having hilarious deaths). First instance of shaken, not stirred as well. Also has an amazing piece of dialogue: Bond: Do you expect me to talk? Goldfinger: No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!

Now I feel like I'd never really seen a proper James Bond film before. This is a genuinely good film. It's a bit dated and not without its goofy moments, but it has the entertainment value and the right mix of seriousness and larger-than-lifeness that makes the Bond franchise worthwhile. If all the Bond films were of this quality, I'd also like the series as much as some people seem to do.

Classic Bond's all-time high? Between "Shocking. Positively shocking," Bassey's theme song, the girl painted gold, Auric Goldfinger and Oddjob as one of the greatest villain/henchman combos ever, the Aston Martin DB5, "No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!", Pussy Galore, the final battle at Fort Knox, and classic Connery at his finest, this one is dense with iconic moments, characters and imagery. The perfect pulp spy thriller and one of my favorite films. (Ytadel's series ranking: #2 of 24)

All the iconic Bond tropes really start to show themselves here. More puns, more silly names and silly plots, bigger setpieces, etc. It mostly works, Odd Job is a wonderful highlight, but sometimes it feels really shoehorned in. Goldfinger is a good villain, though his plan is too ridiculous for my tastes and as the film turns its focus towards it in the second half it suffers. The first half of the movie is great, at least.

Fun and campy stuff, but it takes itself seriously just enough to make it work, while at the same time allowing itself to have fun with the material. I liked Connery a lot more here than the previous two installments, as he actually played James Bond closer to a real person. It's also pretty incredible how everything in this film worked so well it became cliche.

If you've never seen it, it will feel familiar. As quite possibly the best of the Bond films, this one defines all that come afterward, lending archetypes (and what have now become cliches) to Bond and the entire spy genre. Connery is at his best. There is such ease to his slickness, and Frobe's Auric Goldfinger is a wonderful foil: a man with the smarts of Bond, but not the confidence. "Operation Grand Slam" is way ahead of its time in terms of size and scope. Still, the action is a bit clunky.

The seminal Bond film, establishing many of the cliches and most referenced moments. From the suspenseful laser scene parodied time after time in other media, the enigmatic Pussy Galore, the Bond Girl after whom all others take their cues, the hypercompetent henchman Oddjob and his boss, the dastardly Auric Goldfinger, setting the standard for Bond villains and their henchmen. Truly remarkable, even today.

The movie where the series start to find its formula. An over-the-top-villain with a silly death trap, dry humour, fabulous themesong and a plot that may have more holes than a Swiss cheese, but at least moves fast in the first two thirds. On the other hand, third act is too long and having Bond "forcefully convince" Galore to switch to his team - in more ways than one - was cringe-worthy.

Have you ever heard Sean Connery say "pussy?" It's awesome, and alone makes this worth watching. It's a pretty good movie otherwise and has one of the more memorable baddies (Oddjob). I had a good time, regardless of sexism and ridiculousness.

Easily one of the best Bond films, Goldfinger finally nailed it for the action to drama ratio. In Goldfinger, Sean Connery had truly fit into the role of James Bond, and his performance is top notch. With Connery's great job, a cool story, and the right amount of charm and bravado, Goldfinger is as good as it gets for the secret agent series. Awesome!

Even beyond the casual racism and misogyny, the Bond films have aged poorly, and this more than most. It does ends up being the most archetypal bond film though: Eccentric Villainous Mastermind with Overly Complicated Scheme, check. Over-the-top Gadgets, check. Love Interest with Punny Name, check. Hilariously inept henchmen, check. Hell, this was even the movie that started his love affair with Aston Martins and shaken Martinis. If you love old Bond films, than you'll especially love this.

This is pretty great. Thrilling plot that's rather well written, which is something you won't find in most Bond films. Also, it has the worlds strongest mute man whose weapon of choice is his hat. What more could you possibly want? The very end is a bit of a letdown in that it doesn't make that much sense, but it doesn't ruin it too much. Has a pretty incredible theme song.

Although I prefer the formula change, action sequences & romantic lead of OHMSS, it's easy to see why this is so well-liked. Despite more than a couple of contrivances to make the story go in a certain direction (esp Goldfinger carting Bond around instead of torturing him to find out exactly what he's allegedly told his superiors), this is the first time the formula was perfected: solid villain, lots of hot chicks w/ 1 preposterous name & Q's gimmicks told w/ some unexpected tweaks.

The beginning and the undoing of the Bond series is still a rollicking, thrilling and amusing boys own fantasy adventure, setting the template for the rest of the series and ushering in a new style of machismo action film (the final time Bond would be ahead of the curve as a trend-setter). Connery's effortlessly relaxed performance is arguably his best go-round, and Frobe and sinister Sakata are the best of the megalomaniacs who would come to dominate the series.

My favorite of the Bond films. Yes, the sexual politics are long since out of date (as are the racial politics, national politics, so on), but this established the formula (along with From Russia With Love) for the Bond films to come and is arguably the movie that so many spy films (and other genre films) have had to dialogue with. This is Connery as his most assured as Bond. It has enough over-the-top plot points to give a camp sensibility but never to tire the viewer out.

Surprisingly weak. Many's favorite bond film struggles to be in my top 10. Bond is too incompetent in this one and his only accomplishment is to nail the women. He has no relevant part in the actual plot. Oddjob is also a problem. He is ridiculous and second worst bond villain after Jaws. The gold paint and the amounts of "Pussy" are highlights.

There's a lot to like about this movie from Oddjob and Pussy Galore to the theme song and Sean Connery is as good as ever, however I personally feel it loses a lot of momentum when James Bond is captured by the villain for about a third of the movie. Some really solid scenes between Bond and Goldfinger towards the beginning, but ultimately I disagree that this is the best of the Connery James Bond movies.

Hands down the definitive Bond film. Goldfinger introduces fans to the tropes, tone, and careful balance of humor and action that the better Bond films have aspired to match since. While its not as good as its immediate predecessor in terms of writing, the style and charm set the template for franchises future, effectively creating a new sub-genre. Not 60's noir or 70's camp, the third installment feels fresh, special, and more exciting than ever.

Goldfinger is a really silly movie with some really awful moments (James Bond "turning" Pussy Galore through some rather uncomfortable hay-rolling scenes? Yeaaah...) but it is almost definitely the ultimate in "Classic Bond" material - excellent stuntwork, a well-paced plot with a real sense of investigation and development, some fantastic dialogue, and Sean Connery at his best - charming, brutish, and smug as fuck. A fun time with James Bond. This is the Bond film that launched a thousand imitators. Connery is suave, intelligent, and confident and it's fun to watch him sneak his way out of every situation, almost to the point where you question just how high the stakes really are. Goldfinger is the archetype of Bond films & the first to open with an admittedly great song. The action scenes are a marked improvement. There are quippy one-liner puns galore alongside some iconic scenes & gadgets. However there are a few issues that make it a tad less enjoyable than its predecessors. Namely Bond seems to be getting less competent (though Felix's quip lampoons this near the end). Also the film edges into too campy territory while Bond's sexual assault is what saves the day.

Probably the movie that confirmed the Bond series as being here to stay. Certainly has its interesting villains. But beside the setpieces that everyone remembers this one is deeply dramatically unsound, with Connery spending most of the picture in custody, winning strictly on his ability to seduce a Lesbian Frost Queen, and a climax that relies on a completely ridiculous distortion of time. A weak entry in the series; the best part is the remarkable theme song belted by the great Shirley Bassey.

Sadly, I can't say the same about the other side, as Oddjob's about as ill-conceived a character as they come. While not always to my taste, I can see how this has become the favorite of many fans as there's more of everything: cars, women, wit, etc. Unfortunately though, this includes an excess of exposition, leaving it a good way away from the lean, mean Bond of my dreams.
