Golgotha

Robert Le Vigan's otherworldly and noble portrayal of Christ is convincing. A true work of art with inventive direction (though the soundtrack is inappropriate in parts). As the title implies, it focuses on events relating to Jesus' death and resurrection, which are related accurately if simply. The Sinister Video(!) release available in the U.S. is English dubbed only with shockingly bad picture and audio quality. If any film is worthy of restoration it is this one.

Julien Duvivier does Jesus Christ! The best thing about Golgotha is it's visuals. Duvivier knew how to capture the mood showing he comes from silent cinema telling it's story with images parallel with the words. The film is faithful to it's central character and include much of the political game surrounding the myth. Robert Le Vigan as Jesus is a caricature.Harry Baur as Hérode and the great Jean Gabin as Ponce Pilate. Baur's part is small, but very effective! Gabin, sadly very plain.
