The acting and directing is solid, and I thought the story was provocative and interesting (if heavy-handed) for the first two-thirds. The final act is overwrought and unbelievable - it deviates from a natural and organic story arc so that it can pose a final moral quandary that feels much more forced and manipulative than the compelling and murky ethics of the first two acts of the film.

Big surprise from both Afflecks. Aside from being well acted (Casey Affleck is really good in this) and directed, the story was extremely engrossing. It's a great detective story that keeps you interested, and the twists are surprising enough to be interesting, but grounded enough with background that they're not out of nowhere. The movie ends with a moral dilemma that might be unsatisfactory to a lot of people (no "right" answer), but it was handled well.

Ben Affleck does amazing job directing and all of the actors are great. Films only weakness are the numerous endings. We could have survived if Mr. Affleck had dropped one of them off. I really can't understand how it got only one Oscar nomination cause it's one of the best films this year.

Solid debut by Ben Affleck who joins the list of "mediocre actors who breakthrough into good/great directors". P.S. His brother Casey is way more talented for acting than him. Oscar nod is fair.

Ben Affleck shows a subtlety and intelligence behind the camera that he has rarely shown in front of it. "Gone Baby Gone" is a well made and engrossing thriller. Generally well written with a quality cast who all deliver (at the very least) solid performances & a classy musical score from Gregson-Williams. This film twists and turns and probably has too many false endings, but not to its detriment. Never too predictable, it ends with a testing moral dilemma, that Affleck lets you ponder on.

Solid entry from Ben Affleck! Yes! Ben "Gigli" Affleck! Ben "Armageddon" Affleck! Ben.. Anyways this is actually a pretty cool neo-noir with a very interesting subject, that is handled sensitively and sensibly. I've never been thoroughly convinced about Casey as a tough detective, but Harris with a mullet is awesome and he's partnered by Ashton! It has flaws, but the ending is fantastic, and this is from Ben "Daredevil" Affleck!

Surprisingly good for the terrible subject. A look into the dark side of society. The story peels back layer by layer. After you have it figured out, the surprises keep coming. Casey Affleck is great in this role. This is a crime drama with lots of twists. A missing child, and the case seems hopeless, but the local boy digs until he finds the truth. Quite unrealistic ending and confusing relationship between him and his girlfriend at the end. Great movie that leaves you pondering many subjects.

Well directed and showcases Affleck's skill behind the camera, which has only grown since. I have some problems with the story (and kind of the pacing as well) because it seemed too far fetched for the serious tone and themes of the movie. But at the same time, the story provided a really interesting ethical dilemma that probably couldn't be developed any more organically.

If they would've ended this movie right before the police show up at the end and arrest Freeman then I would've thought this was one of the best movies ever but the ending drags and ruins it for me. The cast is pretty superb, but I think its more thanks to a really nice written script. Ben Affleck was quite good as a director.

Starts out great, gets mediocre and contrived towards the end and the story suffers for it, but the final scene makes it somewhat forgivable. Ed Harris is great. Morgan Freeman is Morgan Freeman. Casey Affleck is my boy. Sparks an interest in seeing what Ben Affleck can actually be capable of as a writer/director.

With a Dennis Lehane novel as its origin and a very respectable collection of actors within, this could have been really special. But it melodramatically drags its feet instead, and acts as if the audience has never seen movies before. We all know when he says that the case is over 40 minutes in that it isn't, and that when that main character remains suspicious, there's something more going on. And that makes it a thumb-twiddling wait for the film to get on with it.

I appreciate the moral ambiguity in this film, I really do. But the lack of realism in the story kills it for me. It's funny how the film tries 'to stay in da hood'. Other than that Affleck has no style whatsoever. Sure there's camera shaking to amplify the suspense, but that's like the plain standard for contemporary Hollywood crime dramas.

Casey Affleck and Michelle Monaghan are perfect and the story is gloomy. In all one can only do what they feel is right even if it is wrong to everyone else. This is pretty much as perfect as a film can get. The academy should really start to take a good hard look at these types of films.

Excellent film. Tough to watch from start to finish due the incredibly complex moral ambiguity throughout. Casey Affleck is superb and the supporting cast of Michelle Monaghan, Ed Harris, Morgan Freeman and John Ashton really ensure that no one takes the movie down at all. I know Ben Affleck gets a lot of hate but I think he's an accomplished actor, who's admittedly been in some bad films, but if this continue like this he'll have a directorial career ahead of him.

On the whole, this is a strong debut for Ben Affleck's directing career. The pacing is great, the way it shows a real, uncomfortable side of Boston feels very genuine, and Casey gives a terrific performance. The story feels a bit too full of the bait and switch tactic, to the point where it becomes almost hard to accept once the final truth is revealed. Still, no doubting the intensity of the drama nor the challenging nature of the climax and falling action.

An interesting moral dilemma is posed at the climax of the film and it should leave audiences split. What's done is done, but was it right? Gone Baby Gone is the biggest surprise so far this year. For one, it's directed by Ben Affleck who if you ask most people--myself excluded, I think he's great--is a hack. This is his first true work behind the scenes since 1997 and this is every bit as good as Good Will Hunting. Excellent casting of his brother and a superb moral story makes this among

If I made my top 10 of the year right now, this would be number 1. Ben Affleck pulls no punches with a directorial debut that's gutsy as well as accomplished; there are no easy answers in this movie, and that's why I loved it. It's contentious, thrilling, and heartbreaking all at once, and the fact that Casey Affleck is so believable makes it all the more rewarding. The twists here aren't of the "Gotcha!" variety -- they were there, just waiting to be uncovered, like in the best mysteries.

A remarkable film in every sense of the word. Ben Affleck directs a stunning piece of work, mixing in spot-on performances from his talented cast along with a twist-and-turn child-abduction plot that keeps you guessing, moving, and feeling. By the end, Affleck challenges the audience with a moral stance, and his film represents the purpose of important movies--to put us under the spotlight and have us make that stand ourselves. Especially the first half is tremendous. Very intense and I really enjoyed how we get to know the characters by how they react as the mystery unfolds. The neo noir style of the first two acts works very well. Unfortunately it switches style to some degree, making the plot speed up a bit too much for my taste. But nevertheless a great movie with an intriguing story and probably the best I've seen from young Affleck.

A really nice surprise. The story is very well executed and interesting, with a few twists and turns but nothing too unbelievable. The acting is very good as well although I felt the direction was pretty standard. Not bad by any means, but there's little that stands out as special and Affleck overuses certain cliches, most obviously the musical cues to set the mood. The rest is compelling enough to rise above that and the film leaves you thinking about the choices that are made.

I love mystery/thriller books and films that have a deep sense of the moral complexity of life. Gone, Baby, Gone excels in this regard. The "good" guys do the wrong things for the right reasons, and some of the "bad" guys do the right things for the wrong reasons. Actually, it's murkier than that. At the end of the film, just ask yourself: just who were "good guys" and "bad guys" in the film? As in life itself, it's just not that obvious.
