The acting and directing is solid, and I thought the story was provocative and interesting (if heavy-handed) for the first two-thirds. The final act is overwrought and unbelievable - it deviates from a natural and organic story arc so that it can pose a final moral quandary that feels much more forced and manipulative than the compelling and murky ethics of the first two acts of the film.

Ben Affleck does amazing job directing and all of the actors are great. Films only weakness are the numerous endings. We could have survived if Mr. Affleck had dropped one of them off. I really can't understand how it got only one Oscar nomination cause it's one of the best films this year.

Solid entry from Ben Affleck! Yes! Ben "Gigli" Affleck! Ben "Armageddon" Affleck! Ben.. Anyways this is actually a pretty cool neo-noir with a very interesting subject, that is handled sensitively and sensibly. I've never been thoroughly convinced about Casey as a tough detective, but Harris with a mullet is awesome and he's partnered by Ashton! It has flaws, but the ending is fantastic, and this is from Ben "Daredevil" Affleck!

Well directed and showcases Affleck's skill behind the camera, which has only grown since. I have some problems with the story (and kind of the pacing as well) because it seemed too far fetched for the serious tone and themes of the movie. But at the same time, the story provided a really interesting ethical dilemma that probably couldn't be developed any more organically.

Big surprise from both Afflecks. Aside from being well acted (Casey Affleck is really good in this) and directed, the story was extremely engrossing. It's a great detective story that keeps you interested, and the twists are surprising enough to be interesting, but grounded enough with background that they're not out of nowhere. The movie ends with a moral dilemma that might be unsatisfactory to a lot of people (no "right" answer), but it was handled well.

Ben Affleck shows a subtlety and intelligence behind the camera that he has rarely shown in front of it. "Gone Baby Gone" is a well made and engrossing thriller. Generally well written with a quality cast who all deliver (at the very least) solid performances & a classy musical score from Gregson-Williams. This film twists and turns and probably has too many false endings, but not to its detriment. Never too predictable, it ends with a testing moral dilemma, that Affleck lets you ponder on.

Surprisingly good for the terrible subject. A look into the dark side of society. The story peels back layer by layer. After you have it figured out, the surprises keep coming. Casey Affleck is great in this role. This is a crime drama with lots of twists. A missing child, and the case seems hopeless, but the local boy digs until he finds the truth. Quite unrealistic ending and confusing relationship between him and his girlfriend at the end. Great movie that leaves you pondering many subjects.

The rumors of talent on both Affleck's parts is distorted but nobody is doing there best here, especially the writers [outside of the convincing portrayal of Boston]. It's at least marginally enjoyable - if formulaic - until the final 30 minutes.

Starts out great, gets mediocre and contrived towards the end and the story suffers for it, but the final scene makes it somewhat forgivable. Ed Harris is great. Morgan Freeman is Morgan Freeman. Casey Affleck is my boy. Sparks an interest in seeing what Ben Affleck can actually be capable of as a writer/director.

With a Dennis Lehane novel as its origin and a very respectable collection of actors within, this could have been really special. But it melodramatically drags its feet instead, and acts as if the audience has never seen movies before. We all know when he says that the case is over 40 minutes in that it isn't, and that when that main character remains suspicious, there's something more going on. And that makes it a thumb-twiddling wait for the film to get on with it.

Excellent film. Tough to watch from start to finish due the incredibly complex moral ambiguity throughout. Casey Affleck is superb and the supporting cast of Michelle Monaghan, Ed Harris, Morgan Freeman and John Ashton really ensure that no one takes the movie down at all. I know Ben Affleck gets a lot of hate but I think he's an accomplished actor, who's admittedly been in some bad films, but if this continue like this he'll have a directorial career ahead of him.

I appreciate the moral ambiguity in this film, I really do. But the lack of realism in the story kills it for me. It's funny how the film tries 'to stay in da hood'. Other than that Affleck has no style whatsoever. Sure there's camera shaking to amplify the suspense, but that's like the plain standard for contemporary Hollywood crime dramas.

If they would've ended this movie right before the police show up at the end and arrest Freeman then I would've thought this was one of the best movies ever but the ending drags and ruins it for me. On the whole, this is a strong debut for Ben Affleck's directing career. The pacing is great, the way it shows a real, uncomfortable side of Boston feels very genuine, and Casey gives a terrific performance. The story feels a bit too full of the bait and switch tactic, to the point where it becomes almost hard to accept once the final truth is revealed. Still, no doubting the intensity of the drama nor the challenging nature of the climax and falling action.

Casey Affleck and Michelle Monaghan are perfect and the story is gloomy. In all one can only do what they feel is right even if it is wrong to everyone else. This is pretty much as perfect as a film can get. The academy should really start to take a good hard look at these types of films.

This was a really good film. It looked 'Hollywood', in terms of cinematography and such, but it was much more raw in story and content. It had a great cast - Casey Affleck's a bit of an odd actor, but I quite like him. The characters felt very true to life and I could easily identify them and their decisions. And who knew Ben Affleck would be a good director? It presented several moral dilemmas, which I always like. And yeah, just a really solid film overall.

Ben Affleck proves that he is a filmmaker to be reckoned with. "Gone Baby Gone" is an absorbing and well-made crime thriller with confident pacing and strong performances. Sure, the script is clichéd and corny in spots, but this is a refreshingly straightforward and intelligent neonoir that captivates the viewer with its satisfactory mix of grittiness, sentimentalism and moral dilemmas. Like Clint Eastwood, Affleck has revealed himself as a talent behind the camera rather than in front of it.

Gone Baby Gone is the directorial début of Ben Affleck, and it is a good one. It manages to be thrilling, despite there not being a lot of action, and it gives you characters that are oddly charming. It fails to give the characters proper back-story or development, but they manages to still become emotionally attached to the viewer. The acting is great, and the difficult subject matter, as well as the moral choice at the end of the film, only serves to make it an incredibly moving experience.

The second half strays from the first half's visceral realism just enough to feel like a different movie, but I still thought both halves worked. I loved the film's climax, mostly because both sides had valid points. Casey Affleck does a great job acting as an appropriately-conflicted protagonist, and Amy Ryan and Titus Welliver give performances very unlike them, but very well-executed. A very sad, but a very interesting movie that leaves the viewer with a hell of a lot to think about.

Yeah, fairly good. Although the dialogue can seem a little too clever and even show-offey for the realistic angle the film is going for, it's an economically paced and full story that never takes any easy turns, even if it feels telegraphed at times. I got a bit bored towards the end, though my interest was picked up by the twist, which offers up some interesting questions of morality -- but overall, it lacks a cinematic flair and character.

A really nice surprise. The story is very well executed and interesting, with a few twists and turns but nothing too unbelievable. The acting is very good as well although I felt the direction was pretty standard. Not bad by any means, but there's little that stands out as special and Affleck overuses certain cliches, most obviously the musical cues to set the mood. The rest is compelling enough to rise above that and the film leaves you thinking about the choices that are made.

Very good opening act, falls away in the second act, and the third act was an absurd and deplorable bit of contrivance filled with speechifying and cliché, all in the name of framing (in a ridiculous way) a moral dilemma, thereby ruining the movie as it dawns on the audience that all that had gone before was merely window dressing, prelude to the worst kind of Hollywood hokum (in which Dennis Lehane seems to specialise).
