Insurance investigator Maindrian Pace and his team lead double-lives as unstoppable car thieves. When a South American drug lord pays Pace to steal 48 cars for him, all but one, a 1973 Ford Mustang, are in the bag. As Pace prepares to rip-off the fastback, codenamed "Eleanor", in Long Beach, he is unaware that his boss has tipped off the police after a business dispute. Detectives are waiting and pursue Pace through five cities as he desperately tries to get away. (imdb)

I've never seen an exposition conversation (v/o) continue into the totally unconnected following scene. Even in the scene it should be in we rarely see the actors speaking, leaving that sequence very disorientating. Then, because a Latin man said so, 'they' start stealing 48 cars & find/burn some heroin along the way. Somehow, 'they' steal all of them except one which takes a 34 minute car chase scene, a third of the film to complete. This somehow made 40 million dollars according to Wikipedia.

The car chase is pretty cool, but holy shit it just never ends.

Cars cars cars. The whole film is an excuse for a 40 minute car chase which is admittedly superb and makes up for the rest of the flimsy goings on.

The smashy smashy and the classy metal is enough for me.

You can effectively skip the first half of the movie, just start watching when Halicki starts walking through the garage and enjoy the mindblowing car chase.

The Car chase second half is so awesome it is well worth the atrocious first part.

Mildly entertaining but to say that I thought about it 60 seconds after it was over would be pushing it.

Admittedly I'm harder on car movies because I'm not much of a fan of cars in general.

The chase scene is the centerpiece with all the plot as filler. Still...what a chase scene.

The Eleanor chase takes up the entire final third of the movie, so while starting as fun and frantic it develops into nothing more than repetitive shots of skids and crashes, and as a result becomes a little dull. Over-indulgance on the part of Halicki then, who's love of cars/stunts blind him to the other essential ingredients of a good flick (decent plot, acting, soundtrack, etc.). Watchable, but the 2000 remake is much better.

Awful acting, strange editing, and a reasonable story with little dramatic tension. Then, CARCHASES!

I think the car chase sequel is too damn long. The French Connection one is way much better. And the ending is absurdly stupid, like in one of those cheap action movies.

One of the most incoherent and poorly paced movies I've ever seen. Half the time I didn't know who was who and what was going on despite having a simple, bare-bones plot. It wastes so much time on useless scenes and so little time setting up situations and developing characters. And the extended 30+ min chase scene was completely devoid of excitement. Total amateur hour.

Some of the poorest dialog and acting I've ever seen but the film was obviously created solely for car people. A 40-minute chase scene is incredibly ambitious but Halicki really pulls it off

The big chase is wonderful (and goes on for like 40 minutes) but the entire first half of the film is awful. It's no surprise that star H.B. Halicki also directed the film because no other director in their right mind would cast him in a lead role. He's a bad actor and he's not much of a filmmaker either but he is one hell of a driver. I recommend just viewing the chase in isolation on YouTube, the rest is not worth watching.

It's a disjointed mess when it comes to the plot. No great acting here, no intensely beautiful artistic shots to mention... but the cars. The cars, man! That chase was so intense and I loved seeing all the different cars here. Hurt my heart to see so many get destroyed but that's to be expected in a movie that's really based on one, huge car chase of one Mustang vs. all the police. Loved it. No CGI here. Just the real stuff.

I'll be honest, I don't understand the particulars of the heist or the plot or many of the character relationships. But all that goes out the window in the film's bravura 45-minute car chase. It's an amazing technical feat that never overdoes it while doubling as a tour of the motoring subcultures of LA. And, importantly, it doesn't shy away from depicting the carnage wrought by reckless driving. Should be required viewing in driver's ed.
