Wow! They don't make them like this anymore. Douglas Sirk meets Looking for Mr Goodbar meets Mandingo in this bizarre, politically incorrect melodrama about an unstable, masochistic teacher and her frustration with the world around her, culminating in a violent affair with the hot black school janitor. A lost cult classic!

Watch for the radiator scene. And the injustice. Cinema is a good medium for injustice, i think.

Top badass moment? Evelyn decides to use Donald Pleasance as a psychiatrist. Given his record with Michael Myers that’s a pretty brave decision. Anne Heywood is actually far too beautiful to pull off the virginal spinster role, especially considering how many men seem to find her attractive here. Rafe is an underappreciated movie baddie, everyone overacts more than William Shatner and I’m glad the Geranium (well technically it’s a Pelargonium) survives. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

This is a rough watch. While there is a touch of exploitation, this is mainly a horribly sad story about a depressed teacher. The injustice and racism is thick. Anne Heywood gives quite the performance.
