A nerve-wracking escalation of bad and desperate decisions from a terrible person who drags all those around him down into a grimy, neon-drenched vortex where hope and empathy come to die. But enough about [religion/politics], Good Time is quite the intense ride. One where you both want to get off, and can't keep yourself from leaving since you want to see how far down things can go. The ending arrives quite suddenly, but that just adds to the merciless 'that's life for ya' factor.

I loved this. The Safdies are really good directors. A lot of the exterior shots of the night city and the way the conversations are filmed reminded me quite of bit of Michael Mann and David Fincher. The intro was extremely well done too. Robert Pattinson is very good and Benny Safdie is actually really good. This movie was very intense at times and uncomfortable at others. Just about everything was done well here, even if Connie isn't a very likable guy. I highly recommend it.

A twisted electronic dream set in the neon streets of New York City. It's a story of dysfunction and desperation that is, in its own way, propelled by love. The music is beautiful, the cinematography all its own, and the performances are so good you can't tell the professionals from the non-actors. The Safdies do it again.

I'm high on the style. Neon-synth waves wash over grainy film stock, distant zooms intensify motion, fugues of overlapping dialogue erode communication. So much pizzazz it's off the pizzazz-o-meter. My new Hollywood pipe dream is for the Sadfies to write/direct a Hotline Miami movie featuring Nic Cage - I guarantee that would be totally bitchin' awesome and not at all a waste of talent

Pattinson's character Connie Nikas invokes an at once craftier and stupider Vincent Gallo from "Buffalo 66", in a character-centered crime caper crossing "Dog Day Afternoon" with "Crimson Gold". The Safdies create a gritty, unnerving thriller of errors with a nuanced anti-hero; an underprivileged yet self-entitled prick, who is not quite as good a brother as he thinks he is to mentally challenged Nick, played by Ben Safdie in the gutwrenching scenes book-ending the story.

Having only seen two Safdie movies, I feel that I can already tell that I'm not much of a fan. They do two things really well, they pump their movies with so much anxiety that viewers might need medication afterward, and they do a fabulous job at bringing New York City to life, especially the unglossy, real city behind the postcards us non-natives are familiar with. The biggest defect in their films, this one included, is that almost all of the characters have very few redeeming qualities.

The Safdies' ability to morph NYC into a threatening, lurching, decrepit pit of despair, its denizens the fringes of society--dealers, hustlers, thugs, addicts, the impoverished & the misguided & the disabled & the broken--calls to mind the fierce, raw grit of '80s Abel Ferrara, rarely seen in filmmaking today. Training their eye on the underbelly of the city, the Safdies continue to utilize claustrophobic vérité techniques and absorbing soundscapes in what is visceral filmmaking at its height

Holy shit this is fucking good. The acting, the direction, the cinematography, the musical score, the editing, everything about this movie is absolutely excellent. The score is incredibly engaging and original despite it's familiar sound. The sense of place is so strong and every element of the production design conjures up a dirty, sleazy feeling. Robert Pattinson, Benny Safdie, and the rest of the cast are in top form and the color, oh my gaaaahhhhh

A night-gone-bad film which careens from one miserable scenario to the next with reckless abandon, the acuity of its portrayal of the wrong places with the wrong people continually gnawing in the pit of my stomach. Few films have ever made me as anxious. It's as propulsive as the best action films with a sense of sheer dread to rival the best horror, and shot with the flair of a Nicolas Winding Refn film. I'm torn between wanting to never watch it again or wanting to watch it again right now.

Fueled by a hypnotic visual style and a dense, driving soundscape, Good Time is at once messed up and completely in tune with its own unhinged insanity. While I couldn't relate to the character's questionable morals, the Safdies make a compelling case for the often destructive nature of love and how it can make people do some pretty stupid things. And I loved almost every minute of it.

Good to see the consensus changing on Pattinson like I knew it would. This is one of those career defining roles. This reminds of last years Victoria but with a better visual style since it's not stuck in the gimmicky one shot thing (although I do like Victoria)

every single second of this film, right from the very first frame, is laced with overwhelming dread. both that Pattinson's Connie will do something horrible -- morally or legally -- or that he won't, and others will be caught in the crossfire in his desperate attempts to prolong the inevitable. if this isn't the best film of the year, it is one that will be passed along by worth of mouth over the weeks and months to come. "did you see Good Time?" be sure your answer is yes.

Interesting to experience a movie that functions in terms of an immediate "What happens next? And then what?" storytelling philosophy. It really feels like the American version of the Dardenne Brothers. Instead of following people with a wide lens behind their backs, we follow from the front with a long lens, so often staying in a pretty tight closeup. The score is mostly fantastic, all performances are great, its just a giant meltdown in the middle of New York. Bizarre and unique.

An incredibly raw look at a desperate criminal in action. After a robbery, their bad situation escalates as the night continues. It was incredible to watch him moves so fluidly from one chaos to the next. A consummate liar, a despicable person, and a terrible influence on his dimwitted brother. Robert Pattinson was convincing. Good music. A whirlwind of action, near constant chaos, some edge of your seat tension and very entertaining.

It's difficult to watch at times just because it's so grubby and depressing, and it doesn't really pursue a stylised aesthetic (Neon Demon, Nightcrawler etc.). I think it's to the film's credit though - they never glamorise his actions or the social decay around him. That final, intrusive scene is really poignant too, and touches on loads of different issues in a really simple but powerful way (my score might be buffed a bit by that oneohtrix point never soundtrack).

The actors, particularly Robert Pattinson in the lead role, give such strong, human performances that their unlikeability and the claustrophobic closeness of the cinematography does not repulse but draws in, and the film is a taut, if sometimes curiously paced, thriller.

Like Rain Man meets Naked meets Cops directed by mumblecore filmmakers. The camera is the eye, observing unflinchingly at the shadows and alleys of the city, that you drive by and only find out later were there. It's both thrilling, threatening, and intimate from the very first scene. Pattinson is enigmatic and spontaneous, fully capable of pulling off this portrait of a charismatic liar. It avoids sentimentality and tragedy but embedding itself forever into memory. Great film.

This has cult film written all over it. It's not just a wild ride, but a brief gaze into the wild ride that some inner-city folks live, best demonstrated by Ray's story. Connie's path ends up going all over the place, and he's taken through excellently shot locations and street-casting that make this film feel like such a revealing exposé of this kind of New York (and the fantastically fitting electronic wonders of Oneohtrix Point Never don't harm the film either).

Fatalistic-paranoid odyssey of a twisted rebellion with a FPS neonesque surveillance aesthetics. Pattinson (Quixote) and the moron (Panza) go through a survival of the fittest journey in the jungle of NY which starts and ends at a rehabilitation center exploring economic and moral demise of contemporary America through several institutions such as prison, hospital etc. Some characters were shallow but it might be a conscious choice to prompt the feeling of nihilism & utter tragicomic vacuity.

Energy, momentum, neon wash, and electronic pulse are the expression of its jovial title. Good Time is an aesthetic treat, but after all it's a sad and pitiable event. Connie takes advantage, deceives, lords himself over the unworthy; misguided and destructive antics all in the name of brotherly love. It is a complicated characterization which defies the viewer to empathize with the plight of a terrible person. The nocturnal capsule and constant sense of frustration recall After Hours.

Smarter people than me have talked about this film's indictment of white privilege or it's exploration of institutional oppression, but it's always shocking to see the Safdies exploring poverty in a way that doesn't feel cloying or exploitative. Robert Pattinson is obviously a powerhouse in this, and it'll be a travesty if he doesn't get nominated for this. How the hell is this Oneohtrix Point Never's first score?

Kind of plays out like a completely depraved version of a stoner buddy comedy. "Good Time" swells with a layered chaos that forces the viewer to live in the moment. Even moments of calm are constricted by the complete tangle surrounding the characters. I started to find some beauty and purpose amongst the fuckery towards the middle of the film, and thats when it clicked with me how impressive this was.

Claustrophobic, anxiety-provoking, and just generally discomforting: All negative descriptors, but in this case they're just a testament to the gripping atmosphere created by the well-crafted gritty thriller script (Ray's tangential story was the one hiccup), memorable turns and score, and bold camerawork (see the glut of shaky close-ups, birds-eye car shots). All of this is brilliantly bookended by two tear-jerking scenes of innocence that stand in sharp contrast to the grime in the middle.

It looks like the Safdies are working hard on perfecting the kind of movie I don't watch. In this one, Ohneotrix Point Never don't disappoint for the movie, but the rest feels a bit like starting a series a couple of episodes in, where the main hero seems impressive but you're just not quite interested enough in him because you must have missed something before.

Artful and intense crime drama/thriller recalling the likes of Mean Streets with a blend of stylised photography and raw performances. It's easy to get caught up in it all and swept along for the ride, but the film really shines when the pace lets up - brief interludes allowing for some intimate character drama and insight. The film develops an engaging narrative and social commentary, but in the conclusion feels a little slight and mostly sells short all the good work building to that point.

Filled with an uncomfortable tension and forward energy that threatens to boil over into violence at any moment. Pattinson gives an incredible performance, selling Connie's desperate sleaze perfectly. However the pacing does stumble somewhere in the middle, and it never quite recaptures the anxiety of the first half. Also RIP that security guard who got a mouthful of LSD, that shit's active in the tens of micrograms range.

It tries to fool the viewer into believing it's a frenetic movie by using an admittedly pretty cool, electronic soundtrack and some decent cinematography and usage of colour... but it's not that. It's rather boring with almost no truly memorable moments. I liked the credits when the disabled brother was with others like him trying to integrate himself, but the movie doesn't really earn that payoff because the rest of it is stale. Pattinson was fine but it was hardly this career-making role.

Strong "descent into madness" crime drama, underpinned by a mesmeric Robert Pattinson. The story and direction are executed in a way that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish, with clever use of soundtrack and camera angles to create a perpetual state of unease, nay, desperation. Dark, moody and visceral - the Safdies explore their disturbing vision of an America which appears utterly beyond salvation.

Who doesn't love a movie about a clever gang of gentlemen thieves with an intricate plan that unfolds with surprising twists and turns? Well, it turns out that the exact opposite approach is great too. ‘Good Time’ is about dumb lower-class thugs, desperately trying to fend off whatever problem is in front of them. Pattison nails the irritated and ruthless ‘Can do’ attitude of a drug fiend. It's unnerving to watch his unhinged decision-making. Good times? Not exactly. Good film, though.

Unless someone comes to an almost biblical conclusion--that the only way to avoid disaster is to, paradoxically, stand up and face what's coming. To confess. To repent. To sacrifice yourself for the sake of others. The movie gets there--eventually. Alas, to come to this sort of conclusion does not make for a good time, nor does it make for a good movie. But it does offer, at least, a decent caveat.

An accessible, grubby, stylized crime movie with nuance on issues of criminality, law enforcement, privilege, and urban life. Its social commentary goes unspoken almost to a fault, with its frenetic movement and heightened suspense doing most of the talking. You almost wish for more quiet character moments and less rapid-fire action, but what's there speaks loudly. It's a genre film first-and-foremost, and a competent one, but it's the hidden desperation and muted frenzy that elevates it.

Watching idiots be stupid is only entertaining for so long. Although I have to admit some of it was pretty funny. Unintentionally so. Nick being the only character I gave a shit about made it kind of a bummer to have him pretty much out of the story for so long. The second half of the movie was just lot weaker in general. Once it stopped being about Nick, Connie became less interesting, as did the plot, and that new moron was just fucking annoying. But the ending was pretty cool.

There are a lot of great individual pieces to Good Time, but it just doesn't quite come together as a whole. Robert Pattinson gives a very good performance. Stylistically the score is phenomenal and the cinematography/lighting is exquisite. The beginning third is very fast paced and engaging, but as the film starts to lose focus I start to lose interest. As a tale about lumpenproletariat characters of a kind usually not given central focus in (at least Hollywood) movies, this is better than average, even if the implausibly frenetic narrative can hardly be called cinema verité. I'm getting the feeling that lurid red and blue lighting has come into fashion now that orange and teal has (thankfully) gone out of it: can't help but wonder if that's because a generation of filmmakers have now been raised on STAR WARS and its sequels.

It is actually so clear with this one that they wanted to make this since Heaven Knows What because its basically all the most hypnotically transfixing, adrenaline-juiced, scumbag survivalism of that movie's best moments which took precedent over that movie's actual conceit. Really tense movie to the point of being frequently uncomfortable to watch. That is clearly the intent of the Safdies so credit to them for achieving what they set out to do. 'Good Time' is anything but though, and Pattinson is excellent in an ugly risky role as he continues to show there's more to him than being a sulky vampire.
