I would have liked to have known a bit more about Goya, far too much of the film was focused on Javier Bardem and Natalie Portman. Unfortunately, this film has also confirmed my suspicions that Portman can't act worth a damn, because she had the same expression throughout the entire film.

The most sad thing about this movie is that many of those things could actually happen. Goya's decisions were a little bit strange at times, but well, who'd understand an artist ;) It's a pity they didn't put more emphasis on the act of painting, but the process of making those satire images was interesting.

a great look at inquisition era, and french revolution era thinking in the same movie.

Atrocities committed by the church and powerful corrupt officials. An intense exposé of the hypocrisy of religion and the government that usurped in Napoleon's era. Javier Bardem is a corrupt priest forced to flee church justice only to return later as its judge and jury. A memorable and incredible turn of fortunes. Natalie Portman's roles are absolutely horrendous, a woman with Stockholm syndrome and a street walker. Well worth watching, but not for the faint of heart.

This is a "non so pure than purified" movie. Javier Bardem's character is a summary of millions of people's true story. I think Forman doesn't want to tell about Goya that much.

Has little to do with Goya himself, focusing mostly on some priest played by Bardem. The story is hampered by massive leaps in time and being um, kind of boring.

Fumbling, bumbling, confused mess of a period flick.

Looked good and had some good ideas, but came off more jumbled than cohesive.

There are definitely some slow spots in this film. But I recommend this film based on the performances of Natalie Portman and Javier Bardem. The story is also interesting.

This could have been so much better. For starters the casting was really odd, they could have at least tried to cast nationalities or have people you know.. do accents? Portman tries, but I don't know why, just not anywhere near great. Had potential though. Ending is just bizarre. Completely not-historical featuring historical characters and a couple of actual true life events all smashed together.

The movie starts strong but devolves into a dark comedy and it's not particularly good at the transition.

When you watch movie, be more attentive. In the beginning they underlined clearly that Javier was Goya's ghost. So this story was not actually about Goya himself but the turncoat Javier. But though the story started nicely, it lost quite much after jumping 15 years forewards. I think the ending was okay, but the middle part shattered the plot in pieces and spoiled everything.

Fejlcasting? God og ikke ret god alligevel Skarsgaard virker utroværdig, Portman er smuk og tom - alligevel holder jeg af filmen

An underrated Bush era film about torture and religious zealotry. Xavier Bardem is very good here.

Quite forgettable televison-like production. I don't believe that Goya was such an uniteresting, mild personality...
