Gozu stands out as one of Miike's finer efforts, with a plot including his mainstay yakuza and criminal investigation themes, but also a lot of weirdness. The mystery and often repugnant surreal imagery here are very Lynchian or perhaps Cronenbergian.

Has some of the most insanely twisted scenes I've ever seen in my life, and I've seen a lot of them. That's all that needs to be said, really. That and the man who sits in the restaurant on the phone insisting that it was, in fact, hot the other day and he was, in fact, wearing a t-shirt (t-shirt time! Incidentally a completely freaking hilarious scene.) makes this movie very much worth watching. To put it simply, it's a very Miike film.

Like you would expect from Miike, this is filled with bizarre and surreal images, but they lose their potential power when they're seemingly not connected to an overall theme or even suggested message. I get that it to a certain degree is about repressed homosexuality, but it has nothing to say on the matter.

Hey look it's a bunch of weird stuff happening without any reason to care and none of which will really be explained. It was atmospheric at times, but mostly it just felt point- and aimless. Does get a few bonus points for drooling man-cow, the worst way to die captured on film (it involves a ladle) and a hilariously twisted birth.

Should have been right up my alley, but it wasn't. Some of the scenes are awesome -- the last 10 minutes, the cow-man, a couple other scenes -- but I felt it dragged! I'm sure this movie is saying something... someone said repressed homosexuality and I can see that, but I had a hard time getting into it. Not because of the weirdness, just because that for every weird moment, there was a couple not so fantastic moments. Oh well, original and twisted... worth a watch.

Remember when you were a kid riding your bike around town and every corner you turned was a new place you'd never seen before? Also, remember drinking milk from your mother's breasts? I got an Alice in Wonderland vibe from this big-time, so naturally I'm all over it. Lots of paranoia too. Miike's a cool dude. Childish maybe, but that's partially what makes him great.

For someone who pumps out movies faster than an assembly line worker pump out cars, it's not surprising to find that Miike's films vary in quality. One thing does remains consistent, and that is that he is one twisted motherfucker (and that's a compliment, by the way). Gozu, however, isn't his strongest effort. It's not even his most dementedly imaginative. Despite the brilliant Cronenbergian finale, the overall impression is of an aimless and empty film (that's not a compliment, by the way).

Seems to be about the homosexual desire between two individuals, in a milieu (the underworld of gangsters) that makes the expression of that desire impossible, and so about the tortured journey through another milieu (the underworld of mythology, à la Orpheus and Eurydice) one must take in search of the other, as the only path possible towards being together (via an intermediary). Nevertheless, overall impression is of a poor Lynch imitation with touches of Cronenberg. More farce than horror.

If you read about how this movie was made before you watch it, the experience will be 10x better. This movie is very funny, and a little bit on the disturbing side.

Great stuff, really kept me second guessing what could possibly come next. And Miike has really pulled together some good visual direction here. His stuff's sometimes flat, but this had a great balance of film versus video look.

Very David Lynch-esque, with all the good and bad connotations of that phrase. Some of it is rather pointless (and needlessly disgusting) but it's all pretty engaging. I got enough lactation in Visitor Q however, I don't need to see any more of that... ever.

Takashi Miike's bizarre, frightening, and sometimes humorous tribute to David Lynch. The story of a man coming to terms with his own sexuality, masked as a supernatural thriller/mystery, bending genres in a way only Miike can do. Definitely one of my favorite films from the prolific director.

some really, really great images and ideas are in here. it's kind of a "regardless of the consequences"-surrealism, which gleams through some other miike films as well (and that is a good thing), but then at parts it loses itself and gets a little bit risible. great experience though.

The first half is so dull and aimless it feels like a bad case of writer's block. The rest of the movie makes up for it. It's sick and disgusting and I'll never recommend it to anybody, but the inspired weirdness of the last hour is really worth watching... if you're into that sort of stuff.

The sheer randomness of it all gets tiresome, but even bad Takashi Miike is at least interesting; the "birth" scene will stay with me I'm sure.

A little disappointing given its legendary reputation for being the weirdest movie ever made. It's way, way too long, with bad pacing and huge sections that could have simply been chopped out (the screenplay was written in the span of a week, so I can't say I'm surprised), so that what results isn't a snappy, in-your-face blast of weirdness, but a series of long, boring stretches of not much with some weird shit in between. I did like it for the most part, but it could have been so much better.

Of Miike Takashi's numerous horror flicks, Gozu stands among the strangest and most graphic. Despite its narrative flaws, the visceral awkwardness of Takashi's vision is felt within every frame, leading to one of the most insane conclusions every captured on film.

wow the ending makes this movie amazing. Up untill the end i was thinking this movie was pretty slow and had some mildly interesting characters and one very odd scene involving milk. Then you get slapped in the face with some good ol Takashi shock and an amazing scene that i wont possibly ever forget.

If the aim was simply to provide a random series of surreal and disturbing images to the viewer, then it most definitely succeeds, but other than that I'm not entirely sure what the appeal is. Frustratingly, it starts off with a lot of promise, but the looser the plot got, the more my attention waned. Still... it's certainly original.

Gozu is a weird one alright, and definitely not for dog lovers or people freaked out by cows (and other lactating mammals... ahem) or those who take offence to the odd bit of gender-switching, but all in all not as batshit crazy as its reputation had me expecting.

Lynchian nightmare film (with strong echoes of THE TENANT) is admittedly beautifully crafted and constructed by Miike; despite some truly horrifying and repellent dark corners his hero gets dragged down, this still may be Miike's most even handed, and intensely atmospheric film to date (that the reviewer has seen). Aided by a terrific cast all seemingly at home with the strange, dazed dialogue; gritty cinematography places the strange goings on specifically and deliberately in the 'real world.'

In the interview with for Forbes Miike said: I've had viewers come directly to my seat while I'm sitting in the darkness watching the film and gauging everyone's reactions, and they'll say "you're sick." Well... The premise and the whole idea for this movie was awesome, some surreal, weird situations. The plot was engaging, the idea of all characters were great... but it was destroyed by the finale. Unnecessary and could've been resolved in some better way, less.. Sick.

A cena do parto é simplesmente formidável.

Insanely stupid, or perhaps moronically idiotic. A long slog to anything good. It starts off with a nonsensical meeting of gangsters and goes pretty far down hill from there getting progressively more twisted and ludicrous. I'm surprised I was able to get through it, since there was nothing really worthwhile until the end with its alien-like sex scene that could possibly be used to define what the term bat-shit crazy actually means.

Well I tried to soldier through GOZU but couldn't make it more than an hour. I don't go for the "disjointed scenes and aggressively anti-plot" device that gets used a lot in horror. Experimental is not my bag.

Tá achando que esqueci o aniversário de 60 anos do Miike? Achou errado, otário! Esse é do período mais fértil do Miike em que ele fazia uma obra-prima atrás da outra, mesmo assim é um dos que menos gosto dessa época. Unrated DVDRip MED.

I think I'm finally done with Miike after this did nothing for me, and Gozu is his most hyped film besides Audition and maybe Ichi. Lots of people in here comparing this to Lynch (including one guy saying this is better? How dare you), but that's simply reducing it to "both have weird surreal imagery". Miike has never made me feel a sense of profound unease, or had a character that I empathized with. There are lots of stretches of boredom in this when blood or milk isn't on the screen.
